Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Lieutenant Corey Dahlem

Occasionally, we are graced with the presence of an earth bound angel. They are unable to stay with us for long, but while they do, they bring unprecedented joy and happiness to all they touch. While they are here, we bask in their goodness and marvel at their contribution to the world. When they leave, we are left with the devastation that comes with losing such a wonderful being...but we must remember...the earth bound angels are not ours to keep. They are ours to enjoy, learn from, and behold until they return home.
I would like to say that it grieves me that you had to be taken. My father, Denis I. Blom, spoke really high of you and told me that he is sadden that you are gone now. He told me that you both started the same day and worked well together. Thank you Sir, for your contribution to Gainesville, you will not be forgotten.

My 28 years with the Department, I never knew Corey to be unkind to anyone. He was always very soft spoken and ready to assist me with whatever concerns I had in the Records Division. My last conversation with Corey was on March 30, when he came to Records to get a background check completed for his daughter to get into EMT Training and talked to me about his Band. He was truly a friend that I will miss. I send my prayers to his family as well as my GPD Family that they will be comforted in this time of sorrow.

To the family, friends and fellow Officers at the Gainesville Police Department,

My last memory of Lt. Dahlem was seeing him Monday night as he worked the crowds during the basketball championship. As always, he was smiling doing the job he loved and we cordially spoke in passing as we worked. If I had only known this would be the last time I would have seen him before God called him home, I would have shook his hand and thanked him for always being polite and respectful as our paths crossed. The few calls that I had the privilege of interacting with him on I was always impressed with the confidence and professionalism that he exhibited. This will be my memory of Lt. Corey Dahlem… a confident, professional Police Officer who loved his career and respected by those that served along side of him.. No matter what color of uniform they wore.

To the family of Lt. Dahlem… I share in your grief.. Your sadness… I offer my sympathy …To me Lt Dahlem was a respected colleague but to you he was a beloved son, husband and father … All of you are my thoughts and prayers.. I pray that God will wrap his loving arms around each of you and comfort you through this most difficult time.

To his Gainesville Police family I mourn with you in your loss.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on. I honestly believe there are but two persons who protect the sinful human race from destroying itself. One is God's Holy Spirit. The other is the Law Enforcement Officer. Without them, we would all perish at each other's hands. We, as Law Enforcement Officers, were called into this profession and our Lord and Savior has blessed each of us because:
God ordains the Police Officer’s profession.
The Police Officer is sent by God.
The Police Officer is vested with God's authority to enforce the law.
A Police Officer's badge is to be honored by us, because it is honored by God.

John 15:13 states that “NO GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS”. Lt. Dahlem, you gave the ultimate sacrifice, your life for your fellow man, while serving, defending, and protecting others in our community. For this we will all be for ever grateful.

Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers; for they shall be called be called the children of God

Though our badges and uniforms may be different, our mission is the same. Lt. Dahlem rest in peace with our other fallen Brothers and Sisters. While you patrol heaven's streets, we will continue the fight in your honor until we meet again at heaven's gate.

LT. The last thing you said to me was to be careful and to let you know how my dentist appointment went.(It's been rescheduled LT)You treated me like I were your daughter and would check up on me more than my own parents. You never hesitated when I needed help and I hope you know how thankful I am for that.I know my age shows through from time to time, and I am sorry I am so stubborn-even though it kept you on your toes.

You'd be proud though, LT. I aced my math test like you told me to. You were one of the few who thought I could work full time on mids and go to school full time without a problem. I'll remember what you told me, and i'll make sure my grades never drop. i'll make you proud.

LT, work is going to be rough as i am sure it has been for everyone. I know I have to put on my uniform and head back to the station. I have worked on your shift since i have been on my own. You watched out for me even when I have been a handful. Whether it was my newspaper debut as the cow herder "Tex" or the topic of some short joke, you always tried to make me laugh. You always made sure I knew when you thought I did a good job. i cannot remember the last time i said thank you, though. i hope you do because i always have been thankful. i always will be thankful.

You would probably tell me to keep my head up and do the best i could, so that is what i am trying to do. I'll keep you in mind everytime i'm in uniform, and do the Dahlem 'vest pull' before going 10-8. you won't be forgotten. i'll make sure of it. i'll be a midget on a mission.(just trying to make you smile..)

i'll let the cows know you say hi...

i'll miss you lt.
keep an eye on me..you know i tend to get into trouble.

From an officer in the Columbus, Ohio area, it is absolutely tragic that this could happen in relation to the game on Monday night. It reminds all of us that no detail is truly safe. May the Lord receive you in his kingdom, and bless your family during this time.

My sincerest condolences and prayers go out to Lt. Dahlem's family, friends and his fellow officers at GPD. I had the privilege of interviewing Lt. Dahlem from time to time and learning law enforcement tidbits from him. He was one of the most helpful, knowledgeable and kindest officers on the force who always had a good sense of humor. This is truly a senseless tragedy.

Rest in peace.
