Reflections for Lieutenant Corey Dahlem

Family, friends, co-workers – a golden heart stopped beating…God broke our hearts to prove he only takes the best – Lt. Dahlem your work here is done. It is not until someone is gone that we truly know how great they are. May the memories of his greatness sustain you in this time of sorrow. May all the kind words and memories that have been shared put a smile on your face as they put a tear in your eye.

Lt. Dahlem was always kind and helpful to me at work but my memory of him will be of him and Lt. Willis on NW 16th St. I was on my way to Santa Fe Community College when I first saw two men running, one short one tall that looked familiar. I could not believe that two GPD officers would run in the middle of the day on a well traveled street. I would look for them when I went to class and one day even got to say hello. I told him I would see them running and they should alternate their route because they had developed a routine. With a slight smile he said they do not run they jog they use to run. I know Lt. Willis will miss his running/jogging partner but now Lt. Dahlem has another jogging partner, God. Be blessed and know that your husband, father, friend was loved by many.

Cherish each day and those you love and please be safe out there.

To the Gainesville PD and the family of Lt. Dahlem, I am sorry for your loss. What a tragidy to come out of something that was a celebration. We at the BCSO know the pain you are going thru and will keep his family and co-workers in our prayers.
The date of 04/04/04 will forever be a day our Sheriff's office will remember and honor our fallen Brother. On that day three years ago Sgt. Jeff Hewitt was shot and killed. I was very sad to see another HERO was taken from us on April 4th. Lieutenant Dahlem was mentioned during our briefing, and from now on our Departments will honor our fallen Brother's on the same day.

Lt Dahlem...this is why you are out there...this is what you are trying to stop from happening to some innocent person...I hope that from this comes more awareness...what will it take to make people understand? How many innocent lives will be lost before people start to wake up and be responsible? My heart aches for you and your family. Your life was dedicated to protecting the community, and now we, as a community, are dedicated to you and your family. Much love and prayers to you and your family.

After the game I worked that corner for hours standing no more than twenty feet from where this tragedy occurred. The Gainesville Police, Alachua County Sheriff's Office and the University of Florida Police were all there throughout the night protecting people, assisting citizens, making sure nobody got hurt. I left thirty minutes prior to this incident and I am still upset and shocked about what happened. My entire department is saddened about this loss. I didn't know Lt. Dahlem well, but I had worked aside him at a couple of football games in the past. He was the kind of guy that showed he was genuine and sincere to everyone just by the way he presented himself.

Although we all know about certain risks that present themselves while we are performing the duties of our job, it hurts beyond imagination when something like a drunk driver takes the life of another. My deepest regret and sorrow goes out to Lt. Dahlem's family and those who knew him.

God Bless.

I first met Corey when he came to work with us in Records for a brief time, probably 15 years ago now. What I remember most about Corey was his friendly smile and great sense of humor. He would always go out of his way to say hello and ask how you were doing, and he never forgot a name. Whenever he came to us for assistance over the years, we were glad to help because he was always polite and respectful and expressed sincere appreciation.

GPD has lost one of its most valuable members. My heart goes out to his family and to all of those who loved him and will miss him. We will never forget you, Corey. You were one of the good guys.

I worked with Lt. Dahlem for several months while assigned as a new officer on midnight shift at GPD. I haven't seen him in over a year due to military orders I have been on. I am very saddened at learning of this senseless tradgedy. I cannot say I knew Lt. Dahlem very well but what was always easy to see in him was that he was just a great guy and really seemed to care about his fellow officers. I appreciate that in him and wish his family the solace in knowing he was a great guy who made a difference while he was here. In the end I think that is the most we can all hope for.

You were a good man in life as well as death. I have known you and your family for years and even though i have moved away i remember my childhood playing in your backyard with your son. You were a great man and always did the right thing. You always showed me the utmost respect even though i was not the best kid on the block. You did a fantastic job providing for your family and will always be remembered for how you lived not how you died.

Lieutenant Dahlem thank you for your service. I wish we could take back all the senseless acts that have killed police officers. It saddens me how many police officers are killed due to selflessness. You will never be forgotten and please know that I will be praying for you and your family always.

I was a newly promoted Lieutenant two years ago when I was assigned to the Midnight shift. I met Corey a short time after that. Corey quickly became someone I admired, respected, and looked up to. Corey was a true leader in every sense of the word who looked after not only his own troops, but mine too. He went out of his way to speak to my guys and even put them in for several awards for their accomplishments for calls in the city. I had the honor of being able to call Corey my friend and I rememeber having breakfast with him at Perkins Friday morning the last weekend he worked. He would frequently meet my shift there and would sit in the booth amoung us. During a ride along Corey and I did together at the beginning of March, I remember him constantly speaking of his family and how much he loved them. He was so proud of his children's accomplishments and loved his wife so much. He looked forwarded to retiring soon and constantly told me how lucky he was to have such great Sergeants working for him. He told me he never had to worry about anything because they were so capable. He loved his troops so much and constantly spoke of how great they were. I never had a mentor in my life before I met Corey. He was so instrumental in showing me how a great leader should be and made me a better person. I looked up to Corey and could always rely on my Phone ringing whenever we had an incident occur in the County. Corey would track events on his computer and would call as soon as an incident occured asking, "Bella, what do you need?" I would call him when he had stuff occur in the City and it became a partnership. Corey would always say how much he loved the midnight shift. We would joke that if they (the admin) left us both on nights the rest of our carrers, it would be OK with us! The night Corey was struck by this person who I felt showed no remorse, I had spoken to him right after the game let out. I called and asked him if he needed anything. I told him I was monitoring the radio for the downtown as well and that I could give him anything he needed. I remember Corey saying that he ws OK and that he was having trouble hearing me. He said the game was getting out and that he would call back. The last thing I heard him say was "Bye buddy." About an hour later, I was notified that a GPD motor unit had been struck on University Ave. I began to run code to the hospital. I couldn't imagine what Corey must have been going through so I called him to offer help not knowing that he was the one who had been struck. I remember speaking with someone who had answered the phone and asking them to tell Corey that I would help him with anything he needed. I was told that he could not come to the phone. When I pulled up to the hospital, I learned that Corey was inside fighting for his life. I began to pray and I felt like Corey was pleading with me to take care of those affected and still at the scene for him. Corey would have wanted that.Even as I went through the motions of arranging to take over calls in the City and offer assistance at the scene, I couldn't believe what was happening. It had to be a mistake. It was not and a large hole has been left in the entire LEO community as a result of what has happened. We (our shift) cannot begin to fathom what suffering Corey's family is experiencing. My heart goes out to them and to his GPD brothers and sisters. I can only tell you that I am so sorry for the loss of Corey Dahlem and hope that as time goes by, we can all begin to try to understand what has happened. When I go back to work tomorrow night, I know I will automatically reach for the phone when a priority call goes out in the City and I will stare at my phone when we have an incident waiting for Corey's number to come up when it never will again. Corey, I admire you so much. Thank you for setting such an example for me as a leader and a friend. The midnight shift will never be the same without you. I vow though, to do anything in my power to take care of the GPD officers should they ever need anything at all. Rest in peace buddy. You are loved, respected, and admired. I know that you will be keeping the same hours in heaven and will set your alarm every night to come out and work with us only now you will be watching over us. We will make you proud so you will know that all your efforts were not for nothing. I know that your dream was for our agencies to be together as one and work toward a common goal. We will continue that dream for you. God bless you Corey. You are now 10-87 buddy.......
