Reflections for Lieutenant Corey Dahlem

--"If you find it in your heart to care for somebody else, you will have succeeded." -- Maya Angelou

Aloha Lieutenant Corey Dahlem,
Thank you for your service and dedication to your community and your country. You and all officers that continue to lay your lives on the line and pay the ultimate sacrifice to keep our communities and country safe, will NEVER be forgotten.

I personally pledge, (after one of Hawaii's own, Honolulu Police Officer Steve Favela, lost his life last year in the line of duty protecting our Commander in Chief, President George W. Bush), to become a continuum; a keeper of the ODMP light. That sacred light is in the form of an ODMP tribute. People from all walks of life, regardless of age, race, religion, profession, education, and geographical location can share here.

This "LIGHT" comes from within the heart and soul of every person who cares to share a word or two on behalf of each and every fallen officer. Every fallen officer is a hero. The ODMP; Officer Down Memorial Page gives us a place to come together and share our feelings as one family. May we find solace as we give solace to the families who have lost a loved one.

Lieutenant Corey Dahlem , God Bless you. You are a hero. As we say in Hawaii, “You are`Ohana.” “You are Family.” No one will ever be able to replace you for you were unique and very special. No one; not in this lifetime. May God allow you to rest in His Divine peace. I wish you, your loved ones, and your fellow officers, peace and love beyond all understanding. I honor you today. You will NEVER be forgotten.

--"Your life is more important than you can imagine."-- Maya Angelou

** May this Hawaiian prayer give all those who read it comfort. **

THE PEACE OF " I "
KA MALUHIA O KA "I"

Peace be with you, All My Peace,
O ka Maluhia no me oe, Ku'u Maluhia a pau loa,

The Peace that is " I ", the Peace that is "I am".
Ka Maluhia o ka "I", owau no ka Maluhia,

The Peace for always, now and forever and evermore.
Ka Maluhia no na wa a pau, no ke'ia wa a mau a mau loa aku.

My Peace " I " give to you, My Peace " I " leave with you,
Ha'awi aku wau I ku'u Maluhia ia oe, waiho aku wau I ku'u Maluhia me oe,

Not the world's Peace, but, only My Peace,
The Peace of " I ".

A'ole ka Maluhia o ke ao aka, ka'u Maluhia wale no,
Ka Maluhia o ka "I".

Now that I've had time to compose written thoughts, I find that only a few words are needed. Corey was conscientious, compassionate and dedicated in both his personal and professional life. For me, he was an excellent friend, peer, Lieutenant, and Sector Commander in that order.

Corey,

So much has already been said about you, yet so much more can be said as well. But the words we have are so inadequate to express the depth of friendship, loss, shared experiences, love of family, career, service, and so many other things that made up your time at the Gainesville Police Department.

I remember 22 years ago working on Midnight Shift, and you starting with the Department. I remember you riding with your FTO, Dan Kilpatrick, who would speak admiringly of you (which we all knew was rare for Dan), calling you a banty rooster for your readiness to jump into any situation and handle it. That trait continued on for the rest of your career.

I remember the Saturday before you died spending about a 1/2 hour talking with you at an overtime assignment we worked. It was the usual type of conversation; what's going on with the family, looking forward to retirement, latest experiences in our positions at GPD...... What a reminder that none of us are promised tomorrow.

I remember so much about you from all of the years in between. Your smile, your quick wit, your concern for others, your enjoyment of life, your ability to give as good as you got, your devotion to your 'Noles, your pride in your family, your dedication to duty, your willingness to help, and the list goes on and on.....

As we get older, we often think of the legacy that we will leave behind, not only in our careers, but in our lives. It is very obvious from these reflections, the funeral, and the outpouring of caring from the community that Corey's legacy is huge and may never be matched. He touched so many lives in so many different ways, just the latest of which is the mentoring done on Midnight Shift. Those are going to be some humongous shoes to fill.

Sally, Brandon, and Katie, we grieve with you and the rest of Corey's family. Please remember always that he is a hero who stood for all that is right, and that his death is not in vain. He completed his mission that night, to protect and serve, and is now being comforted by God. His legacy also continues in and through you, and though he is physically gone, he will continue to live on in your and our memories.

Corey, don't worry about your family. You know that your family in blue will stand by them, and we will do whatever we can for them. It's the least we can do after all you've done for us.

Thanks for being part of us. You are sorely missed.

Pete

Lt,
It’s been two weeks since the last time I spoke to you; I did not know it would be my last. I will always remember our conversation, while standing on the wall, at the celebration. I want to thank you for helping me adjust to my new agency and my new home. You were always there to answer my questions and help me when asked. For the short time I’ve known you, you were always a friend. Until we meet again, THANK YOU.

LT,

You will truly be missed at the Department. While on midnights I could always expect a call from you at least once a week bringing me in from the eastside of town back to the station to discuss the planning of a new photoshop flier idea that you had. I am glad my last conversation with you that Monday night was after you saw the vacation pictures of SGT Rowe. Watch out for us down here while you're up there. We'll see you soon.

The mourning prayer from the Jewish tradition says it best for me:

Oh God who dwellest on high
grant perfect rest beneath the shelterings wings
of thy divine presence among the holy pure
who shine as a brightness upon the firmament
to Corey who has gone to his Eternal Home.

Shine on, brother. We'll miss your light in our days and nights.

Dahlem was one of the best supervisor I have ever worked for. Lt. Dahlem was kind and was always there to his troops and don't matter what the situation was he was ready for it. You will be missed Sir and it was a pleasure serving under you.

A Part Of America Died
--Author Unknown

Somebody killed a Policeman today,
and a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect,
will be buried with him at his side.

The suspect that killed him will stand up in court,
with counsel demanding his rights.
While a widowed mother must work for her kids,
and spend many long, lonely nights.

The beat that he walked was a battle field too,
just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
to his name they will add a gold star.

Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
in your hometown or in mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
a cop put his life on the line.

Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
and he stands at each rookies side.
He answered the call, of himself gave his all,

And A Part Of America Died.
-------

Rest in peace, Corey.
