True heros are few and far between these days. We do not get to see them in action or thank them enough for who they are and what they do. Our sons and daughters have need of such heros...heros who "seek justice, encourage the opressed, defend the defenseless and plead the case of one who is alone." Officer Shelton and Officer Clark are two of the blues fine heros to be honored and remembered by all. So are the families of these men. They too, are heros for all they have endured while their loved ones served, lonely nights, ballgames and parties alone, weekends alone, and even holiday celebrations being moved because of their hero's hours. The sacrifice they have given to the rest of us can not be measured in worth. Heros like these are the ones God sends to answer the prayers of people in need. Heros are what Jeff and Sean and their loved ones are. Our hearts and prayers are with our heros today and we are forever grateful for all they have done. They are the ones that "make the world go around". If it weren't for them our world would have stopped a long time ago. God Bless Jeff and Sean and their families.

Officer Shelton R.I.P Brother in Blue
From the Family of the late, Lt R Barthold
Westland Michigan, Police Department.

Just Remember Me.. When you carve my name, Into that hard marble wall, Please don’t let my name ever be, A name that you can’t recall, Just remember me, A man whose heart was true, A man who proudly wore, His badge and the blue, Just remember the daddy, Of now a fatherless son, A gentle son, A mother’s pride and joy, The loving man, Who held his wife under a moonlit sky, A strong man, Who knew how to cry, Please don’t let my name, Die with me too, And just remember, I was proud to wear the blue..

A NOTE FROM AN OFFICER
If I have fallen-
And did not wake-
Maybe it’s due to my mistake-
Maybe by chance I’ve stumbled across-
A Robbery, Shooting, or Fight-
That I have lost-
Paying the Ultimate Sacrifice-
But-
I’m at peace with my Life-
So I Offer-
A note from an Officer!!!!

I’ll take this time to express-
That the love of my job-
Brings out my Best-
Never taking life for granted-
Never thinking of time for panic-
It all came so natural to me-
But-
Now I have been set Free-
So I Offer-
A note from and Officer!!!!

I will never forget the tragedy that befell my brother. Though I did not know him I know he was goodness personified. I will soldier on, because that is all I can really do. To honor his memory, to show the world that his death was not in vain, to show all those who would do others harm that we will never stop. OURS is not a life of vengeance it is a life of righteousness and no matter the time or place, the circumstance or distance, WE will stand our ground, in the face of nameless enemies, to ensure that those who cannot help themselves are helped by us.

Jeff,
From whatever body has written about you, you would have fit right in with my patrol squad. It's a sad day when a good MAN is taken from us. God has another officer with him now, and we all have another guardian angel. Rest in peace, brother.

Jennifer,
Words will never help ease your pain. However, now that Jeff is now in a better place. The CMPD will be there for you if you need them. That is what the brotherhood is all about. God will bring you peace and help you get through this difficult time.

"The Final Inspection"

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

A Life well lived is a precious gift of hope and strength and grace from someone who has made our world a brighter, better place. It's filled with and sometimes tears, with friendships formed and good times shared and laughter through the years. A life well-lived is a legacy of joy and pride and pleasure, a loving, lasting memory our grateful hearts will treasure. With heartfelt sympathy to you and your family as we remember a life so very well lived.

I had the great honor of being one of Jeff Shelton’s training officers. From the first minute that I met Jeff, I could not help but like him. He had a great amount of enthusiasm for his new career and wanted to learn as much as he could. For the four weeks that Jeff rode with me, I cannot remember a time when he was not excited about the upcoming shift. It was during this time that I learned about the love of his life, Jennifer, and his dog Beau. He often talked of them both during our shift and it was easy to tell the only thing he loved more than being a cop was Jennifer. Jeff and I became great friends during this time.

After Jeff completed the field training program he and I again worked together as partners in David 1, first on 2nd shift and then again on 3rd shift. Jeff was a great cop, always ready to lend a hand working on a report and always the first to arrive when things were getting tense. Jeff and I often rode together as a two man unit and, in between Jeff’s constant search for “bad guys,” we talked at length of life and family. I have to say that they are some of the most enjoyable shifts I have ever worked. His good nature and sense of humor could always brighten your day.

Three years ago I transferred from David 1 and that was the last time I got to work with Jeff. Over the past three years we stay good friends and would talk often. On Sunday, April 1st I received the news that my friend Jeff was gone. I am still coming to terms with that statement as it just does not seem like it can be true. Not Jeff, he was too good of a cop, but I guess sometimes that just isn’t enough. As I shed my tears I think of Jennifer, and know that my loss cannot compare with hers.

I did not know Sean Clark as well but what little I did know he was a great guy. I first met him when I was working 3rd shift in David 1 and he was working in the area waiting to join the department. I remember him as always smiling and having a very friendly personality. Later when he joined the department that didn’t changed as I never saw him without a smile.

My thoughts and prayers are with both families in this time and I know that both Sean and Jeff are in a better place.

I am sorry that I never had an opportunity to work with you or meet you. I've read some wonderful things about what a fine young man you were and what a dedicated officer. You were a shinning example of the type of officer that our department has. I have always been proud of the department and the outstanding men and women there who wear the badge. Our hearts are heavy with the sadness of your passing. And our thougts and prayers go out to your family. Thank you for your dedication and service to our city. You will be missed.
