Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Lonnie Wells

I remember you as an officer at Cottageville SC. So ironic that you found your fellow C'ville officer shot to death, only to have this terrible thing happen to you.

I loved the time I spent in MC as an officer. My time as an officer helps me today as an attorney.
You worked for a good department, and I am so sorry you died in the line.

If I knew it would be the last time, that I'd see you fall asleep. I would tuck you in more tightly, and pray the Lord your soul to keep,
If I knew it would be the last time, that I see you walk out the door. I would give you a hug and kiss, and call you back for one more.

If I knew it would be the last time, I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise. I would video tape each action and word, so I could play them back day after day.

If I knew it would be the last time, I could spare an extra minute or two to stop and say.. "I love you," instead of assuming, you would KNOW I do.

If I knew it would be the last time, I would be there to share your day. Well I'm sure you'll have so many more, so I can let just this one slip away.

For surely there's always tomorrow, to make up for an oversight. We always get a second chance, to make everything right.

There will always be another day, to say our "I love yous," And certainly there's another chance to say our "Anything I can do's?"

But just in case I might be wrong, and today is all I get. I'd like to say how much I love you, and I hope we never forget.

Tomorrow is not promised to anyone, young or old alike. Today may be the last chance you get, to hold your loved one tight.

So if you're waiting for tomorrow, why not do it today. For if tomorrow never comes, you'll surely regret the day.

That you didn't take that extra time, for a smile, a hug, or a kiss. You were too busy to grant someone, what turned out to be their one last wish.

So hold your loved ones close today, whisper in their ear, Tell them how much you love them, and that you'll always hold them dear,

Take time to say "I'm sorry," "please forgive me," "thank you" or "it's okay." And if tomorrow never comes, you'll have no regrets about today.

I always think of Lonnie Wells as a strong and fun person. I worked with him and I never thought that this day would come. Lonnie was the most pure officer and person that I ever met. When I think about Honesty, Strength, Family, and Friend I think about Lonnie Wells. Several times when I would walk into the station after I joined another Department, Lonnie was always the loudest and the most noticeable voice there. He would always ask "How is the family?" before he would ask about me. I feel Honored to have worked beside him and feel better as a man to have known him. Lonnie you are always in my Thoughts and trust me, You Will Never Be Forgotten my Brother. I miss you Lonnie and I still feel you watching over me.

Police Officer’s
23rd Psalm

The lord is my shepherd,
I shall not want,
His comforting hand reduces fear to naught;
He walks me through the streets of crime,
But he gives me courage and peace of mind.
He leads me by still waters in the path I trod,
And he says in roman’s I’m a “minister of god”,
He leads me in righteousness as he restores my sole,
For his name’s sake he keeps me whole.
When I walk through death’s valley,
Right up to the door,
I will fear no evil,
For he comforts me more;
For thou art with me every step of the way,
As thy rod and thy staff protect me each day.
He prepares a table,
Especially for me,
As I work daily among life’s enemies;
He gives me authority to uphold the law,
And he anoints my position in the midst of it all.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me,
Each day of my life through eternity;
As I long to hear him say ‘well done…”
When I lay down my life, my badge, and my gun.

Ofc Wells was my neighbor. He only lived two blocks from my house. I remember seeing his car in the drive way when my boys and I rode by on our bicycles. I know I waved at him when coming to and from work. I was hearbroken to learn of his and Ofc Stiles death. I've driven by the entrance to the neighborhood where it happened a hundred times. I came by the house and had my 4 year old son give the widow a teddy bear I had riding with me in my cruiser, which had a fresh "Jr Deputy" badge pinned on it from my agency. My wife and I managed to make it to the wake, but could not attend the funeral. he was an asset to the community, and he, along with Ofc Stiles will be missed.

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Everytime I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the man they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Officer Wells. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. You will be in my thoughts.

From reading the reflections left for Lonnie, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Lonnie's life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Lonnie's life was about so much more than the way he died. Lonnie will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.

Officer Wells, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my late fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been four years but we still miss him terribly.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

I just wanted to share a thought or two about Lonnie Wells. We were stationed together onboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt years ago. I remember checking in and Lonnie was the first one to welcome me there and make my first Navy duty station experience a pleasant one. He toured me around and basically help lay the foundation for what i am today in the Navy. Someone who's polite, mild mannered and willing to go to great lengths to assist everyone. I want to say i was shocked to just recently find out about his passing as i was watching a news clip and noticed his picture. I am currently stationed at Naval Weapon Station Charleston located in Goose Creek and just want to say i am deeply sorry for his family in losing such a great guy and positive role model for any and everyone.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Lonnie,
I remember your first day at the P.D. you started shortly after I started. The first time I heard you on the radio, I was like who is this screaming into the radio? But you developed into a very good cop. You never turned on anyone and you always stayed late to make sure you had all your work done. You did not like that computer but you where getting it done. I remember a conversation you and I had about you coming out of the school, and onto the streets. I told you, you can come to my shift anytime, because you where a hard worker and that is what I wanted on my shift. We use to talk about football and have little bets sometime. You are a great person and friend and will miss you. I will see you again. YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. By Brother. WCF1*.
