Reflections for Auxiliary Police Officer Yevgeniy Borisovitch "Eugene" Marshalik

On that fateful night in Greenwich Village, two young men in the prime of their lives, wearing the uniform of New York City Auxiliary Police Officers, unarmed, except for a radio and nightstick, confronted pure evil, their heroism displayed in delaying a mad gunman’s shooting rampage in the crowded streets of Greenwich Village that night. A selfless act of heroism that saved many lives but cost them their own. As the 17th Anniversary of March 14th, 2007, comes up, many of those countless bystanders in the village that night along with the family, friends and colleagues of NYPD Auxiliary Police Officers Eugene Marshalik and Nicholas Pekearo will pause during a moment in their day to think…...think of two heroes of New York City……... two young men……who by fate that spring-like night served as their guardian angels in blue……

I recall an instance back in 1982 when one of our officers, when on his way down from upper Manhattan to the 20th Precinct, which we called home, was held up at gunpoint while in uniform. Made me glad I bought a ballistic vest back in an era when it was rare for Auxiliary Officers, much less regular Officers, to wear them. We weren't armed with firearms then either (S&W Mod 10s in .38 Spec. were the issue sidearm for regular Officers), which made the job quite dangerous (especially in those days). These Officers gave the full measure, knowing the hazards of pursuing an armed suspect without the benefit of defensive firearms. Rest in peace, brothers.
