Reflections for Detective Keith Dressel

As a native Toledoan it seems like yesterday that we heard of the loss of Officer Miscannon. I had always hope to never hear about another Toledo Police Officer to fall in the line of duty again. My prayers go out to the family of Detective Dressel.

Lorraine, of course my prayers and thoughts are with your daughter-in-law and grandchildren in their terrible loss, but they are also with you. A parents loss of a child brings almost unbareable pain--my heart reaches out to you as the mothe of 4 sons. If you are not sure just who I am, I am Kathy Preketes sister and substitute taught at Whiteford for many years. I found this Poem that seemed appropriate:
You Taught Me How to Love
You taught me how to love by
The way that you loved me;
And by your unseen sustenance,
To see what you could see.
You gave to me through who you were
The gift of what I am.
Your pride in me is now my pride;
Your faith, my caravan.

Your life does not conclude with death,
Nor will it end with mine,
For all the lives I touch, you touch,
And so on through all time.

This tragedy has hit everyone hard, the policemen we have here at school can hardly talk. They just sit and stare--so please know everyone around you is feeling your grief too.

I heard this horrible news while I was at work yesterday. My heart breaks for Det. Dressel's wife and especially his children. We as adults know the risks of this profession, but the children don't and they are just proud that their parent is a "police officer". I know that Det. Dressel's friends and the Toledo PD family will watch over his children and be there as their friends for years to come.

As I put my young son to bed everynight, these are part of the prayers we say: "God bless all of the policemen, firemen, and soldiers who keep us safe. Dear Jesus, if you should call one of them home tonight, please grant them eternal peace and give their families the strength and courage to carry on. Amen" Det. Dressel was in our prayers without knowing two nights ago and he will be in our prayers again tonignt.

God bless Det. Dressel, his wife and children and the rest of his family and all of the members of the Toledo PD.

There is no way to comprehend the reason(s) why something this tragic happens. To his family I will grieve with you in prayer. Detective Dressel didn’t know when that life-threatening moment may come, but he knew that it could come on the very next call or the very next citizen contact. Detective Dressel put up a heroic struggle against death with amazing courage and selflessness. Indeed we are very fortunate to have had Detective Dressel serving and protecting us. A true hero! I had hoped to be retired from both this job and this Earth before another of my brethren fell...but it was not to be.
What first struck me about Keith when we were in the academy, was his droll wit and his dry as a bone sense of humor. He never failed to find comedy in the darkest corners of the city or the human soul. He managed to keep that good humor throughout his career and a crooked smile was a constant fixture upon his face.
His energy for his job never waned, nor did his commitment to his community, and he will be sorely missed by all the members of the forty sixth class.

Rest well Brother!

Fate and survival are what each Police Officer faces each day they leave their families and home, to offer their life in the place of those, known and unknown, they swore to protect. What an awesome reward each of us are given when these brave and unselfish men and women offer themselves in the place of us. Keith is my reward for a lifetime and I thank him.
