Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Anthony Jon Holly

I can't believe that it's almost been a year since you left us to be with the King of all Kings. I think about you often and constantly remember the laughs we had. In just a few days we will take a few moments to remember you. I know you are with each of us every day serving the Lord. God bless and I'll see you again someday.

I remember when we hired Tony and when he hurt his back after graduation from the academy. I teased him and told him, he needed to watch what he was doing; he has a long career ahead of him, but now I understand that he was just living everyday to the fullest. He would visit with me and the other recruiters and tell us how excited he was to get back on the street. I will never forget how he got his nickname “Cabana Boy”, but that’s another story.

I was in Ohio recruiting the morning of Tony’s death. I had the trip canceled so I could be back in time for his viewing and funeral.

Tony, I will never forget how positive and outgoing you were. I think of you on a daily basis and have your picture hung on my desk.

Keep watch over us “Cabana Boy”.

I guess the name says it all. Tony was so much fun to be with, he always had a good joke and a big smile. He always made me laugh. We met at a church function-playing sand-volleyball I believe. I loved the music he listened too (I still have his "Everybody Duck" cd that he loaned me). We went hiking together, ran in the sprinklers, had a huge water gun fight, went out to dinner with my parents. These are a few of the wonderful memeories I have of him. Tony was very self-disciplined and he had a good heart. I miss him.

Hey Buddy... I've been thinking about you a lot lately and just wanted to say "hey". I'm so sorry that your life was cut short. I think of you often, as do < I'm Sure > all of your friends.

Although I've never got to meet your mom in person, her and I have gotten to know each other pretty well over the computer through e-mails and such. What a wonderful person she is. It's no wonder you turned out as good as you did. She's quite the gal, and - ironically - has gotten ME through some pretty tough days since your passing.

I've been visiting your new web site quite a bit lately, the "anthonyhollyfoundation.com". I go there often to check in and see what's new. And I love to be able to go to your "Photos" page... it makes me feel like you're still here.

Tony, thanks for all your words of wisdom and advice. You are sorely loved and missed here on earth. I know that by now you have your wings - USE THEM!

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I haven't spent a lot of time this year reading the memorials of the fallen officers, mainly because it saddens me that so many great men and women have fallen. It's a terrible thing that so many great lives were cut so short. As a fallen officer survivour, my heart goes out to all those that knew and loved Officer Holly, especially to his girlfriend. Know that you are not alone in this journey that you walk and that Anthony will not be forgotten here in Winnipeg.

Officer Holly, thank you for helping to make this world a safer place. If you run into my late fiance Dennis up there give him a hug for all of us down here. It's been just over four years and we still miss him terribly.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Tony was a bright young man with a lot to give to his friends and community. Even when he broke his back in an accident he was determined he would get back in the uniform and his stubborn tenacity got him there. He had a quick smile and was always positive. He was quick to offer a firm handshake and was always sharp and professional. I know I will miss his crooked little smile and sunny disposition.

Tony as I sit here reading theses condolences I can’t help but think back to the first time I remember seeing you in the locker room at ALEA. I remember hearing your laugh and seeing your smile. I knew then that if this guy who was two classes ahead of me could be smiling and laughing I could make it threw the academy. I still fell the same now. You’re memory gives me the strength to carry on threw out my shifts and reminds me I need to be compassionate, even when it is so hard. I only hope I can follow in the path you did. God speed my Brother I will see you soon.

This E-mail from a loved one reminded me of Tony and the compassion he showed to others

Tony was not only my brother on the field but also a brother in Christ.

Not a day passes when I don't think of you or your family. I miss you buddy. Everyday I walk by your locker I thank God for the time that I knew you. You were always a shinning light for God, always bringing me up with your smiles and laughter when I was feeling down. I cherish the times of playing volleyball and working together. You and your family are always in my prayers. Rest in Peace my brother. I will see you shortly in heaven.

I did not know Tony personally, but his sacrifice hit me especially hard as I am applying this summer to hopefully join the ranks of the Glendale Police Department. Not a day goes by where I don't think of him and his family. My only hope is to be as courageous and strong as Officer Holly was. You are a true hero to your community and your country. You will be truly missed, but never forgotten.
