I have thought long and hard about posting words concerning this man and I only hope that the words I have chosen do him justice.

Nicolas G. Sottile Sr., was a true American Hero. Not for how he died but for how he lived his life. There were many that met Nick or Trooper Sottile or even Sgt. Sottile but no one left lesser a person for meeting him.

He was a man that you understood from the time you met him. He was a man of simple desires and easily understood. I never heard Nick speak ill of others but often heard words of encouragement to assist those that he knew or just met. He liked where he was from and who he was. He wasn’t ashamed to let you know that he came from a small community where everyone knew you.

He loved his communities, the one that he lived in, the Church one he practiced in and the Law Enforcement one that he worked in. He also possessed the skills to work all three into one, a quality missed by many.

I can’t recall a time that I didn’t intermingle with Nick that when all and said was done I didn’t feel better because of it. On many levels I think he enjoyed his job just a little better that I and I thought that a rare quality.

There is an old saying that everyone improves a room some by coming into it and others by leaving it. Well, Nick was a truly rare individual because he did both at the same time. He improved any place that he was at, and when he left you knew that you were better for the time he had spent with you and others were about to be improved by his arrival.

I feel that my life is better for having known Nicholas G. Sottile Sr. and I can only hope that I meet him again because I know where he is know. I wasn’t born into your family but because of our chosen profession we became brothers.

I hope the best for Elizabeth and his children. Remember always that you truly knew an American Hero because he was a good man.

Rest in peace my brother your watch here is over, go in peace with God, truly rest 10-42 in heaven.

It has been a few years now since many of us in North Carolina have worked with Nick, yet we all took the news pretty hard. Nick was liked by everyone, he will be missed. God bless his family, our thoughts are with them.

I have grown up with Sergeant Sottile's son Nick. I was around Mr. Sottile at many of our sporting events throughout the years growing up. I knew Mr. Sottile to be a very kind and humerous individual. It was always a good time to be in Mr. Sottile's presence. Memories of Mr. Sottile will last forever in my mind and he will not be forgotten.

I'm so sorry to hear about Sgt. Sottile. My husband was a LEO for 8 years and a firefighter for the past 5 years. My little brother is on the Drug Task Force. A few years ago I listened to the scanner as he called for back up during a routine traffic stop. A lady high on drugs took his gun and put it to his head. Thank God he was able to stick his finger in the slide and prevent her from killing him. She went to prison for 25 years and just won her appeal to only serve half of it. We know when our loved ones start their shift what they could encounter and we pray that it doesn't happen. Your family is in my prayers. Lean on each other and God and you will be able to get through this. Again, I am so sorry for your loss!

I can never find the right words to tell you, the family how much I feel for your loss. I never knew your husband, father and friend but it always hurts when someone from "our family" is lost while performing the same job we do every day.

I am sorry to hear of the loss to Sgt. Sottile's family and the FHP. We just lost one of our THP brothers and was elated to see a FHP unit make the trek all the way to Columbia, TN. I wish I could make way to Florida to return the favor to the FHP and pay my respects to the man and his family. My thoughts and prayers are with Sgt. Sottile's family and friends.

Sergeant Sottile and Family,
You will be missed here in Lake Placid. My children went to school with Nick and Heather. My son played soccer with Nick and your nephew Jimmy. Justice will be done. You were a HERO and you died as a HERO. It scares me to know that my daughter knew the killer. Rest in Peace my Town Hero.

I never knew you,
But we are brothers,
I never met you,
But we are brothers,
Our paths never crossed,
But we are brothers,
I have never patrolled in your town,
But I know we have been on duty together,
just in another town.
And we are brothers.
And as a brother,
I feel the pain,
I feel the hurt,
And I feel the sadness that only a brother can undergo.
The sacrifices that each of us make everyday in nothing compared to the one you and your fellow officers have accepted.
One that everyone one of us is aware could happen
Any day, any moment, any second.
You have made me proud,
You have made my job easier because
I am more aware.
I am more cautious
And I will never forget you.
May God hold you in his hand and have you rest in peace.
