The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

As a retired police officer I know what it was like, wondering each day if this day would be the day that I got the bullet. But as time goes on and it never happens, you tend to relax so when you see a young man like tyron get killed early you know his worst nightmare came through and you cant help but feel sorry for any young man that has to loose his life just as it was starting to take off.

To Tyron family nothing said can undo this nightmare but rest assure that this will past and one day you will see him again and all will be well this is a promise from our lord Jesus Christ and this is the hope that we have that keeps us going.

I haven't spent a lot of time this year reading the memorials of the fallen officers, mainly because it saddens me that so many great men and women have fallen. It's a terrible thing that so many great lives were cut so short. As a fallen officer survivour, my heart goes out to all those that knew and loved Officer Franklin. Know that you are not alone in this journey that you walk and that Tyron will not be forgotten here in Winnipeg.

Officer Franklin, thank you for helping to make this world a safer place. If you run into my late fiance Dennis up there give him a hug for all of us down here. It's been just over four years and we still miss him terribly.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

As a resident of NJ, I cannot express in words the admiration and awe that I have for the ultimate, honorable and heroic sacrifice that Ofcr. Franklin made to protect our community. I want to make sure that his family and especially his young son always knows that his father is a true, genuine hero, and will always be remebered as a hero! Ofcr. Franklin should serve as an inspiration to us all. He will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!

Dear Mrs. Franklin,

I want to express my sorrow in the loss of your husband.
God left you a priceless gift with that wonderful baby you have who is still unaffected by the useless killing and evil that those in public safety go out to protect others from each day. You are a God believing lady and a wonderful mother because Your husband would not have chosen you unless you were special. He wanted a special mate because his appreciation for good had long been established as part of himself. I remember all of the bereaved whenever I pray.
I lost my only son and only immediate family in a Line of Duty accident that was devastating. You will be stronger as you are probably seeing some improvement by now.

To Tyron's family, yours and his,I extend my deepest sympathy. Your strength is in making good memories a daily
remembrance. Anyone who has ever been helplessly alone knows that Jesus is his or her personal Savior or at least this is how I feel and He is my rock especially since I know that God is the author of good and will be victorious over the evil in this world. I hope as time goes on that you draw from this misfortune added knowledge and wisdom with love for all. God bless the Tyron Franklin Legacy.

To: Officer Down

On behalf of the Franklin family, 19 month old Tyron Jr (TJ)., TJ Mom Christina and our extended family members, we would like to thank all Law Enforcement Officers from across the nation and overseas for all their heart felt sympathy as we mourn the loss of our son, Officer Tyron Franklin.

It cannot be forgotten to acknowledge and thank those who have consoled our hearts with words of encouragement, donations, gifts, thoughtful cards of inspiration and the expression of their sympathy in many beautiful flowers and finally for the prayers from those from different nationalities, cultures and backgrounds that continue to strengthen our hearts and faith, we truly thank you.

A special thank to each and every member of the Paterson Police Department who not only assisted our family through this crisis in their own individual way, but also to a team of men and women who with the highest level of professionalism went over and above their call of duty, exhibiting why our son was so proud to be an officer of the law.

We stand firm with you in recognizing our son, your brother in blue for his dedication, loyalty and honor in being the best that he could be in just 23 years. Our son was killed on January 7, 2007 and as we asked “why”, we always thought that the angel that God had sent us would be with us for our life time, but instead his presence on earth was only for a brief stay.

As we reflect in the years invested in raising our son, we never realized that one day he would leave us as he protected our freedom.

It is said that “no man or woman born coward or brave, good or bad can shun his or her destiny”. Tyron’s death was a senseless act which is indicative of the violence that is so prevalent in our communities each and every passing day. The trend is visible and an unaccepted part of today’s society from urban to rural America, North, South, East and West, regardless of race, creed or color.

It is our duty as civilians to be thankful for the work that each Law Enforcement Officer endures, the risks they take each and every day to protect and serve. We tend to take them for granted, as they glide through our neighborhoods, with their sirens blaring along the street and highways or even assisting a stranded motorist we should remember the lives that have been lost and the souls that have been shattered. We must remember our son Police Officer Tyron Franklin.

We must all continue to support and educate others about the various organizations such as Officer Down, who continually strive to support our Officers, and their families who too have sacrificed so much.

To our son Tyron and for those who have died for our freedom, your passing will not be in vein.

We will truly miss you Tyron. Thank you for all that you have done and for teaching us how to be humble, courageous, yet grateful.

The Franklin Family!

To the family of Officer Franklin I am so very sorry for your loss. I came across a tribute video for him on youtube.com and had to come let you know that he is a hero and he won't be forgotten. Remember he is with you everyday. Here is a verse that gives me comfort...

A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. Psalm 68:5

May God's peace be with you.

To my dear family,

GOD IS GOOD without him I'm not certain how you all would hold up. Ty was here with us for a short stay but while he was here he touch the hearts of many and we are blessed to have T.J. to look at each day to see your reflections through his eyes. Whatever the propose for your visit on earth I'm certain one of them was to bring us together as one meaning your Mom, Dad, Sister & Me as one to make sure your name lives on forever. I love you miss you and see you on the other side.
