I met Steve one time on a call on the Seattle/King County jurisdictional border. Very few people have a presence about them that I remember Steve having. I am still new to line of work, but have already seen too many "good cops" taken away from their family, friends and co-workers and the community that they serve. From the countless stories I have heard, Steve was the type of cop that I think we all (at some point) strive to be. Even more than that, he was the type of human being that everyone should strive to be. The small corner of the state that Steve patrolled is darker because of this tragic, senseless loss. My thoughts and prayers are with Steve's family, friends and department. Rest in Peace.

"In days forgotten most of us respected our laws. We trusted our "Peace Officers" to uphold those laws and to protect our families. We cannot call them by that name anymore.

We live with violence that is beyond understanding. Arguments settled with angry words and fists, ending with a hand shake are almost unheard of. Guns and death have taken their place.

An officer knows when he or she is sent out on a call, Death may be waiting. Yet they go; to help; to stop the violence; to protect the people who trust them."

For over 8 years, I worked with Steve at precinct 4. For those who did not know Steve, he worked full speed-ALL THE TIME! He never relaxed in his pursuit of bad guys. He cared about the White Center community more than anyone and made it a better place. EVERY criminal knew Steve Cox and Steve knew every criminal. It was comical that every crook would ask, "Do you know Cox?".

Without any doubt, Steve loved his job. As cliche as it sounds, I truly believe there will never be another like him. Steve always found the motivation to catch 2 or 3 criminals every shift. He loved being a cop and he was great at it! Steve was a family man and overall great guy. Even though we had our differences, I have always had the utmost respect and deepest admiration for him. As a cop, he was the hardest working deputy I have ever known.

Steve, the good Lord will take care of you. Your police family will take care of everything else. Although you are gone, you will never be forgotten.

You get to that five to ten year mark, and you start wondering why you do what you do. Thank you for giving us an example, for reminding us why we do our jobs. I guess God needed another officer to patrol the streets of Heaven. I wish I could question what He does, but I know He had a reason. Thank your for your service and dedication. Thank you for the time you had to spend with us.

My heartfelt condolences to the family of Deputy Sheriff Steve Cox. My own son, a CHP officer, was killed on August 6 of this year, so I can truly say I have an idea of what you are going through. You are changed forever, just as my family has been.I hope you can take some comfort in knowing that many, many people care and are saddened by what has happened to your loved one. When I saw the news report of Steve's death I broke down in tears over the loss of still another excellent officer. There are no words...

You gave up a career as a bright and talented Federal Way prosecutor to become an entry level deputy. This shows you were clearly a man of conviction. You wanted to be a first responder, to be there when it matters most. We respect and honor you. You sacrificed your life trying to make the world a better place. My heart breaks for the loss to your family. You were our brother, and we will not forget you.
