Reflections for Senior Trooper Robert A. Hill, Sr.

Though I never had the chance to meet you when I worked in IOW, everyone I knew had known you well, and spoke so highly of you.

Indeed, you were a hero to so very many people, not just among officers, but citizens alike.

May we all aspire to become just like you as we walk our path down life's highway. God bless you Sir.

Almost one year since you left us. I think of you often. I purposely take the "country route" when I work in Southampton County so I can stop and see you. If I can be half of the man you were, then I will consider my life meaningful. Thank you for everything you taught me on our "weird" F.T.O. phase. A little piece of you will always remain alive in my heart. You are, and forever will be, a HERO.

I just learned of the devastating news, my family's thoughts and prayers go out to your wife and children.

We met Robert and his family in Virginia Beach many years ago on a family vacation. We share fond memories of his genuine warmth and hospitality.

God Bless You Trooper Hill.

I remember Trooper Hill when I was a rookie deputy with Isle of Wight County. I only had the pleasure to work with Trooper Hill on a few occassions and I always thought of him as a very pleasant person that would be there if I needed him. Trooper Hill worked a crash that I was involved in on 258 during the downpours of Hurricane Floyd and to this day I still rmemeber his kindness and professionalism. Thanks for being such a great Trooper. I pray for you, your family and the Troopers of VSP. Rest in peace Trooper Hill.

I just wanted to send my heart felt sorrow to the family of Trooper Hill. As the daughter of a Trooper who was very good friends with the Hill family, it is so hard to accept. You can't help but think, "What if that were my father"....my heart really goes out to his children. I hope each day gets a little brighter.

Rest in peace Trooper Hill, you really are truly missed.

Aloha Senior Trooper Robert A. Hill Sr.,
Thank you for your service and dedication to your community and your country. You and all officers that continue to lay your lives on the line and pay the ultimate sacrifice to keep our communities and country safe, will NEVER be forgotten.

I personally pledge, (after one of Hawaii's own, Honolulu Police Officer Steve Favela, lost his life in the line of duty protecting our Commander in Chief, President George W. Bush), to become a continuum; a keeper of the ODMP light. That light is in the form of an ODMP tribute. People from all walks of life, regardless of age, race, religion, profession, education, and geographical location can share here.

This "LIGHT" comes from within the heart and soul of every person who cares to share a word or two on behalf of each and every fallen officer. Every fallen officer is a hero. The ODMP; Officer Down Memorial Page gives us a place to come together and share our feelings as one family. May we find solace as we give solace to the families who have lost a loved one.

Senior Trooper Robert A. Hill Sr., God Bless you. You are a hero. As we say in Hawaii, “You are`Ohana.” “You are Family.” No one will ever be able to replace you for you were unique and very special. No one; not in this lifetime. May God allow you to rest in His Divine peace. I wish you, your loved ones, and your fellow officers, peace and love beyond all understanding. I honor you today. You HAVE NOT been forgotten.

** May this Hawaiian prayer give all those who read it comfort. **

THE PEACE OF " I "
KA MALUHIA O KA "I"

Peace be with you, All My Peace,
O ka Maluhia no me oe, Ku'u Maluhia a pau loa,

The Peace that is " I ", the Peace that is "I am".
Ka Maluhia o ka "I", owau no ka Maluhia,

The Peace for always, now and forever and evermore.
Ka Maluhia no na wa a pau, no ke'ia wa a mau a mau loa aku.

My Peace " I " give to you, My Peace " I " leave with you,
Ha'awi aku wau I ku'u Maluhia ia oe, waiho aku wau I ku'u Maluhia me oe,

Not the world's Peace, but, only My Peace,
The Peace of " I ".

This is to the Family. I do not know what to say as you know nothing will make you feel better. My 20 year old son Andy was killed by a hit and run driver on July 2 2006. They know who killed him, but still no arrests. The waiting is so hard as you know. Every time I see a hit and run my heart goes out to the family. I just had to write something. As you know there are far to many hit and runs.

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Everytime I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the man they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Trooper Hill, especially to his wife. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. You will be in my thoughts.

From reading the reflections left for Robert, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Robert's life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Robert's life was about so much more than the way he died. Robert will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.

Trooper Hill, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my late fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been four years but we still miss him terribly.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

Robert, I did not know you but my signifcant other SR. Trooper Lockhart did. He only had great things to say about you. As the holidays came I thought more & more of your family & have kept them in my prayers!! Not even time will heal the hurt & empty feeling you have as a love one was taken from you in a second. I pray each shift that God will watch over Randy & return him home as I am sure you did for Robert. If we can help in ANY WAY....please let us know. He gave all & will always be a HERO!!!! Rest in peace!! Sr. Trooper Randy L. Lockhart of the Va. State Police & significant other Carol B. Hamner

Words cannot express the emptiness that is felt throughout this County since your passing. It seems unreal knowing that I can not see your beautiful smiling face or hear your voice on the radio. The only thing I have is a recording of a phone call between you and another dispatcher about a month prior to the accident. Just to hear your voice again I somewhat found peace. My heart goes out to your family, friends, and brothers and sisters in law enforcement. It's funny that even now when I pick up the phone and they acknowledge that they are Trooper ? calling, I still want to hear HILL as the name, but it's not and I have to accept the fact that you are gone now and are in a happier place where you can smile amongst the angels and watch over us.
Til we meet again, rest in peace 1468.

To The Hill and Virginia State Police Family:

On October 9, 1992, I had a personal vehicle accident near the Surry County Cabin Point Bridge, Highway #10 East. An unknown commercial vehicle ran me off the road around a curved roadway portion. My vehicle was a total loss. I had suffered multiple fractures and received emergency medical treatment at Hopewell's John Randolph Hospital. Trooper Robert Hill was the accident investigator. He interviewed me in the hospital emergency room initially and followed up a few days later. I was impressed with his calm demeanor and professional attitude regarding the matter. I would see him patrolling the highway thereafter. He was always "On His Job". He and I would exchange hand waves sometimes. I believe. He has set a true and professional example for other Virginia State Troopers to follow. May God bless his soul and sustain his family.

Trooper Hill you will always be remembered as the man with the "smile". We miss you so bad. I keep thinking back of our conversations and ideas to help the children of Southampton County. Well your ideas live on and there will be no child without presents during the holidays. You were such a dear friend and I miss you greatly. We will take care of your family.
