Deputy Hudnall, the drunk driver who took your life, if he has a conscience and soul will forever understand what he did and regret his actions. He not only took your life, but he affected those who knew and loved you. Though you have been taken physically from your family and friends, they will never be without you and you will forever be there to love and cherish them, and they will know that.

God Bless and may you Rest in Peace, Brother.

It has taken me a few days to take this all in. I hadn't spent as much time with Joe for several years, but he was my friend when he was a truck driver for Viking.

Joe wanted to be in Law Enforcement. It was his dream. On weekends he would ride with me, eager to learn anything he could. During the week, he would stop by the house while he was working, parking his 18 wheeler in fromt of my house. Joe would come inside to ask questions about the calls we went to the previous week. I once had to step out of the room to go to the bathroom or something similar... when I came back in the kitchen the microwave was going... Joe had found sokmething in the refrigerator and was heating it up! He said he knew I would mind, and so he was just going to have a bite.

You didn't mind with Joe. If he was your friend, he loved you like family. (And you don't ask to pull something out of your family's fridge.) I can't remember ever meeting someone who cared more about the people in his life. I saw how much he loved his kids and how much he loved Carrie, his wife.

It's Thanksgiving night, and I just wanted to say thnak you for 10 years of friendship. I'll miss you.

Rest easy brother. May God give your family, friends and colleagues comfort in this time of tragedy. You paid the ultimate price, at the hands of a coward with no regard for anyone's life. Justice will be served. And we in the L.E.O. community will carry on where you left off, making you proud, and never forgetting the sacrafice you paid to make our world a better place to live.

My special thanks to our extended law enforcement family and the citizen's of Kern County. The support we have received has been overwhelming.

As the funeral procession rolled through Bakersfield, seeing citizens lining the streets, waving American flags was touching. But none more than seeing small children holding a parent's hand with one and rendering a salute with the other.

Deputy Hudnall, thank you for your exemplary service to the Kern County Sheriff's Department and the citizens of Kern County. I was blessed to have served with you.

May God bless your family, comrades, and friends.

Thank you for sharing your life and dedication while working the thin blue line.

I'm glad to have known Joe, and thankful for the opportunity to have worked with him. He was a good cop and a good man. Joe was always smiling, and always vigilant in his quest to serve the community. I think about Joe every day since the tragedy, and will always remember him. I am honored to have been witness to his memorial, and thankful for the support of the law enforcement community. Thank you Joe; for your service, your good nature, your support, your humor, and even your long winded embellished stories. When you were telling your tales, I would be silently thinking "get to the point" but now I am thankful to have known you and heard these tales. My thoughts are with Joe's family, and his sacrifice will never be forgotten. "Kern-9, 10-7" Rest in Peace my brother; we'll keep the watch from here.

Joe, the two years that I spent supervising you on the 4 squad (swing shift) in the Metropolitan Patrol Division were some of the most rewarding of my career. One of the major reasons was my crew. Knowing I had you and Rob working north in the 1 zone (The Dale) really made my job easy. I spent so much time North not because I needed to supervise you closely but because it was so much fun working with you guys. I will miss the card games, camping and fishing trips more then you can ever know. Rob, Jimmy, Marvin, Danny and I have been with Carrie and the kids since you left us and we will be there for them until they get sick of us. Know that we love you, miss you are there for your family.

To our extended Law Enforcement Family: Not having ever seen this web page before it is very humbling to see the condolences from all over the country. On behalf of myself and Joe's family I thank you all.
