Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Master Police Officer David George Whitson

Once again we are faced with sorrow of another officer who has given their life helping to protect others. This not only brings sadness to the family but also to the department and the law enforcement of this great country and world. We pray that your sorrow will not be forgotten and that there are other officers there for you in your time of need.

“REMEMBER ME”
Law enforcement officers are, indeed, a special breed of people. Ask anyone on the street and they will tell you that they would not have our jobs for anything in the world. It takes something special to do what we do and at the same time be able to even contemplate retirement. We try to be optimists. Unfortunately, there are a few of us who will never make that date with retirement. By the very nature of our job, we are at risk everyday of losing our lives, either at the hand of some deranged individual or in some other situation that we, by virtue of our occupation, may be unable to avoid. Some people have recognized the hazardous duties we involve ourselves in, the risks we take, and the pride we take in accomplishing that job. There is National Law Enforcement Week, dedicated to us who gladly accept the responsibility of protecting the citizens in our respective jurisdictions. National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Day is dedicated to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. These are but two examples of remembrances specifically for law enforcement personnel. Remembrances that come but once a year. We should remind fellow officers of another type of remembrance, one that will last a lifetime. Sooner or later, a doctor will pronounce us dead. It is inevitable. Regardless of whatever happens, death is the end we will all have to face.

David was a very kind and thoughtful person. A good friend and I think of him as a co-worker as he did police duty with us at Dillard's for many years. I had long talks with him at work and lots of laughter was shared. He was a good father and husband. I will miss him deeply as I am sure others will.

MPO Whitson,

I heard of the incident from my in-laws earlier, who reside in Bowling Green. My heart sank when I saw your picture on the local tv station's website. I went to WKU and we had a class together. I know God will protect and comfort your wife and children during this horrible time, and I can only offer my deepest condolences and sympathy to them, and to your fellow officer's on the Bowling Green Police Department. I may have moved away, but my heart is always in Kentucky and it is with you all now. God Speed Brother....you will not be forgotten!

With each reflection I leave for a fallen brother, I find numerous emotions racing through me. From sadness to anger, from grief to determination.
Your reflection is no different. But with each officer who gave their all, they take a piece of all of us with them. As it is in this case. Your sacrifice, David, shall not be forgotten. Justice was swift and certain, but it still won't bring you home to your family.
Perhaps that it the issue that upsets us all the most: the fact that their is yet ANOTHER widow who is left behind without her soul mate. There is more children left in this world who can never again have Daddy read to them, or play with them, or hug and kiss them. And a Mom who gave all she had to bring a fine boy into this world, and then help mold him into a quality human being, and watch with pride; only to have it all erased in one senseless act of violence.
David, thank you for what you have done, for the kind of man you are, your sacrifice and dedication to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. "In valor, there is hope". Be at peace with God. Amen

Palm Beach Sheriff's Office-Florida

I had never met Officer Whitson personally, but I felt I knew him. His sister, Marcia spoke about him often. You see, Marcia is a dispatcher for my department and she and I would talk about the different things her brother would get into and we kind of compared notes. David, you will be sadly missed by your brother officers along with your immediate family. Your brother officers who remain here will see that your wife and children as well as your sister, Marcia is taken care of. May you rest in peace and allow us to carry on the torch of such a strong brotherhood.
