To Linda and her family, my deepest sympathy. I can't imagine how hard this must be. As you know, my son beat cancer but I could not imagine how I would have handled it if he hadn't. I'm so sorry for your loss.

The family, friends, and co-workers of Trooper Risner and Sergeant Dale Holcomb are in our family's prayers as they try to make sense of this tragedy.

Our family lost Cliff on duty in 1966 traffic accident, and we grieve with Trooper Risner's wife and two children.

Trooper Risner, thank you for your 7 years of service, and may God comfort your family as they embark on a new reality. Rest in peace, sir; you will not be forgotten.

Your death saddens me. I have never met you, but as a spouse of a law enforcement officer I feel like you were part of my family. I am always outraged when we lose a member of our family, but Heaven IS a wonderful reward for such a wonderful person. Happiness is the only emotion there, and you certainly deserve happiness. May your family find peace. I pray for you.

Words can not express feelings over the loss of two of my OSHP family members. I never got to meet Trooper Risner but I did meet his father when I lived in Jackson when my father was the asst district commander. Though I have no badge on my uniform, I wear a black band over my heart. We will move on but you will never be forgotten.

I am so sorry for your loss. I hope you can remember the happier times you spent with Josh.

To John father of Josh my heart breaks for you. I hope you can remember he was doing what he loves being a trooper like his father.

My thanks to Josh for sharing our rookie year in Van Wert together. Nobody likes to break in so far from home.

Thanks to his family for their support of him so far from home, and blessings to his family now, as they embark upon a road for which there is no map.

I live down the road from Linsey and Corey Winfield in Marion. Their presence as neighbors has made this a small world indeed, as they lost Corey's brother Brandy to a line of duty shooting almost two years ago.

Coming home from Josh's funeral and driving past their house, with my blue COPS ribbon flying from my patrol car antenna, made it seem like a very small world indeed.

And it is a small world. Ohio is a busy, busy state, with a busy Highway Patrol. And yet almost everyone I've spoken to lately remembers Josh somehow.
"I heard of him. Is he the tall one from Gallipolis?"
"I just had in-service with him on Tuesday. Damn he's funny."
"I lived with him at Van Wert."
"I coached him."
"I used to hunt with him."

To the Risner family. We in the Highway Patrol know that these times are as trying as any you may ever encounter. We want to be supportive of you however we can. If you want to come and visit, if you need the grass cut, if the kids want stories about Daddy, if you need a ride somewhere, anything. We are family, now more than ever. And family takes care of family.

We truly share your sorrow.

Words don't come easy. This was my sister Linda's only son. I grieve for her and her family as well as Josh's family, and Josh's dad. I live in Florida and travel to Ohio is not possible, which makes it even more difficult for me. I wish I could have been there for my sister. My prayers, thoughts, and deepest sympathy are with the families of all who were lost in this tragic accident.
