Reflections for Sheriff Christopher Cooper Daniels, Sr.

Sheriff may you rest in peace

Deputy John Williamson
Fairfield County Sheriff's Office, OHio

October 18, 2006

To the family, friends, fellow officers and co-workers of Sheriff Chris Daniels. My heart is breaking for all of you. I know the pain you are suffering. I lost my father to an accidential shooting (on his 10th Wedding Anniversary) by another police officer while they were in the briefing room at the police station. He served with the Denver Police Department in Denver, Colorado. I was 8 years old and the oldest of three kids. I remember, like it was yesterday, especially when I hear about another officer loosing his life. I am now a Special Education Teacher today because of the financial support I received from the Denver Police Orphan's Fund. I will always be grateful for that support I received.

I didn't know Sheriff Daniels personally but I waited on him many times at the concession stand at Woodlea Field. Teresa Carr and I used to run the concession stand at Woodlea Field for the Gridiron Gang to raise money for the Tavares High School football team. I also saw him several times at the football games these past couple of years. My son Ryan,(#79)class of 2006, played football with his son Chris Jr.

Sheriff Daniels will be greatly missed by all of us here in Lake County. He was truly a great leader to his Deputies and all the others that worked with him at the LCSO.

My heart is with you during this extremely difficult time. It will get easier but you will never forget. He is now "walking the beat on Heaven's streets." May God bless you and protect you as each day passes.

"We also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us." Romans 5:3-5 NIV

Sheriff, We will never be able to repay your family for what they have lost because you were our Sheriff. I pray that somehow your family will know how much you meant to us and how important your short life was. Rest in peace.

To his family and friends I would like to say that Sheriff Daniels has my utmost respect. Not because of the office he held but because of the way he held his office.

During the election I did not support Sheriff Daniels. Many of us were afraid that if he was elected, nothing would change. After the election, Sheriff Daniels spoke to me personally and told me that he was proud of me for standing up for what I believed in and that he was going to do everything he could to prove our fears wrong.

He did. When Deputy Koester was killed it could have destroyed us. Sheriff Daniels pulled us together and made us a family. I know that the pain of his Deputies and the community cannot compare to the loss of a father and a husband. But I hope it comforts you to know that we share your grief. We lost the head of our family too. ThankYou for sharing him with us and for supporting him as he supported all of us.

Someone posted this on one of web blogs.
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God." Matthew 5:9

Go home to your father, Sheriff. Your legacy will live on in all of us.

I feel blessed to have had you as our leader. The days were easier knowing you were working hard for us. I was at church on Sunday and the Pastor, who knew you, said, "It's okay, he's a believer." The community, charities, family; you did it all. I have fond memories, and you will not be forgotten. Peace be with your entire family. I am praying.

It is so hard to come to this wonderful memorial for our law enforcement and see another name added to the long list of ones taken before Sheriff Daniels.
Our prayers and our sympathies go to the family, loved ones, friends and all the ones who wear the badge of law enforcement.
"When God Made Peace Officers"
Unknown Author
When the Lord was creating peace officers, he was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, "You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one"
And the Lord said, "Have you read the spec on this order?" A peace officer has to be able to run five miles through alleys in the dark, scale walls, enter homes the health inspector wouldn't touch, and not wrinkle his uniform."
He has to be able to sit in an undercover car all day on a stakeout, cover a homicide scene that night, canvass the neighborhood for witnesses and testify in court the next day."
He has to be in top physical condition at all times, running on black coffee and half-eaten meals. And he has to have six pairs of hands."
The angel shook her head slowly and said, "Six pairs of hands...no way."
"It's not the hands that are causing me problems." said the Lord, "It's the three pairs of eyes an officer has to have."
"That's on the standard model?" asked the angel.
The Lord nodded. "One pair that sees through the bulge in a pocket before he asks, 'May I see what's in there sir?' (When he already knows and wishes he'd taken that accounting job.) Another pair here in the side of the head for his partner's safety. And another pair of eyes here in the front that can look reassuringly at a bleeding victim and say. 'You'll be all right ma'am.' When he knows it isn't so."
"Lord," said the angel, touching his sleeve, "rest and work on this tomorrow."
"I can't" said the Lord, "I already have a model that can talk a 250 pound drunk into a patrol car without incident, and feed a family of five on a civil service pay check."
The angel circled the model of the peace officer very slowly. "Can it think?" she asked.
"You bet." said the Lord. "It can tell you the elements of a hundred crime scenes; recite Miranda warnings in his sleep; detain, investigate, search, and arrest a gang member on the street in less time than it takes five learned judges to debate the legality of the stop...and still keeps its sense of humor."
"This officer also has phenomenal personal control. He can deal with crime scenes painted in hell; coax a confession from a child abuser; comfort a murder victim's family; and then read in the daily paper how law enforcement isn't sensitive to the rights of criminal suspects."
Finally, the angel bent over and ran her fingers across the cheek of the peace officer. "There's a leak." She pronounced. "I told you that you are trying to put to much in this model."
"That's not a leak," said the Lord, "it's a tear."
"What's the tear for?" asked the angel.
"It's for bottled-up emotions; for fallen comrades; for commitment to that funny piece of metal called his badge; for justice."
"You're a genius." said the angel.
The Lord looked somber. "I didn't put it there." he said.

To Sheriff Daniels Family...My daughters and I were sitting near you that night. I saw the look in your eyes when you left the stands and it brought back the feelings I had when my wife dies. My heart goes out to you and his entire family. He was obviously a very good man, who gave his life as he lived it...helping others. What better legacy could one hope to leave?

Take care, and may God walk with you on your path.

My deepest thoughts and prayers are with Sheriff Daniels' wife, children, family, friends and co-workers. I was married to Alabama State Trooper Brian Nichols EOW 2/17/2002 and I am now married to Washington County Sheriff Deputy A.V. Carpenter. All of your COPS family is here for you and hurting for you. We all became a family when our loved ones became police officers and now we have even a stronger bond when one of our family members go down. We are here for you to help you along this journey you now have joined with us. God bless you all.

Sheriff Daniels was not only a great leader, but a wonderful person and friend. I have known him for over 20 to 30 years, even before law enforcement. He grew up in Eustis as I my self. I am a third generation from Lake County, and we will miss a great person. Sheriff you will always be remembered. On your picture it says it all FAITH, FAMILY, COMMUNITY. God bless the family!
