Sgt. Burks,
Though I did not know you personally, my husband, Robert LaValley, worked with you for over a year at the Autauga County Sheriff's Office. But because my husband's heart is breaking right now, mine is too. To accept the role of a Police Officer's wife is especially difficult during a time like this. I have thought of you and your family each and every day since the accident.
My husband loves being in law enforcement just as you did. Yes, it's tragedies like this that makes me worried for his saftey. But he shares the same passion and dedication that you exemplified and that is a comfort to me.
You will always be a part of our ACSO family. Go with God now, Mike. Rest in Peace.

My Sarge,
Though I knew you only for a short time, I came to know you not only as a law enforcement officer but also a caring friend and companion. I had the privilege of witnessing your work for the Sheriff's Office and heard how you handled people with problems. I heard the advice you gave and the infinite wisdom you so freely shared. You helped so many people over the years with their personal problems, whether it was marital-related, involving children, whatever. You knew the law and you knew how to get your point across firmly but always with a soft and pleasant spirit. No wonder everyone in the community knows who you are if they don't know you personally. You have done great things in this county and there are many people whose lives were changed because of your influence.

I had the great honor of getting to know you better over the last months, and I want to again thank you for all the praise you gave me, all the encouraging words, everything you shared about your life with me, and for caring about me in spite of everything. You always made me feel safe and never failed to lift me up if I was feeling down. You taught me how to believe in myself again, and to believe in love.

Aside from being a great deputy, Sarge, you were a loyal and caring person who would do anything for anyone. People would come to you on your off days and ask for help and you would do it, telling them "No" was not your way.

Everyone will miss all the little things you did for them. Your happy spirit, your laughter, your never-ending smile will be greatly missed. This tragedy has left a void in many lives, your family, your friends, your co-workers, and mine. I miss you more than words can ever say, and I will always always love you, My Sarge. You will be in my heart forever. Thank you so so much for the memories. It's been an unforgettable ride!

Rest in peace now, until we meet again. You have no more worries, no more pain, and I have a "Guardian Angel" watching over me.

I know the pain your loved ones are feeling right now and the road ahead will be long and rough. There are no magical words I can offer them except to keep your memory alive and talk to as many of your co workers as they can to get all those great stories down so they can pass them on to other family members. Keep watch over your loved ones and those still out on patrol. You are a true hero and will never be forgotten as heroes never die.

Sarge,
It's hard to put into words, how you made me feel. It is hard enough to come to work, from one department, for another. Sometimes, you are made to feel like an outsider. I just want to thank you for making me feel more welcome, at the ACSO, than any other department, that I have worked. You were the first deputy I met, on my first day here, and you made an indelible impression. You and I had just guarded an inmate at Prattville Baptist, on 08/11/06. We were "cuttin-up", and having a good time telling "war stories". I did not know you as long as some of the other deputies, but I feel like we had known each other for a lot longer. I will miss you and the way you made me laugh. You and your family will always be in my thoughts and especially my prayers.
One of your many brothers,
Mike Palmer and family

HEY SARGE,
IT'S BEEN A HELL OF A RIDE. WHEN I FIRST STARTED WITH OUR DEPT., YOU MADE ME FEEL LIKE I HAD BEEN PART OF THE GROUP, ALL ALONG. I ENJOYED THE MANY CONVERSATIONS WE HAD AND HAVING YOU AS A SUPERVISOR. I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR HELPING ALL THOSE TIMES, WITH FIXING MY BOAT. I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU AND ALL YOU HAVE DONE FOR ME. REST IN PEACE, BROTHER.

A2 to A8.......
A2 to A8, you copy?

That call will be with me forever. Everything happened so fast, it was like I was in a dream. We heard there was an accident involving an officer. I called out to my units and you were the one who didn't respond. Never have I felt so helpless.

Rescuers were on the scene within minutes but it was as if time stood still where we were standing.

This was my first emergency involving an officer. I know I have a lot of support around me and I am very grateful.
I will continue my work at ACSO because I know that's what you would want. I will support your fellow deputies as they continue the watch. This tragedy has taught me a lot about the brotherhood of law enforcement.

Thank you for the lessons you taught me about dispatch. Thank you for the advice and the kind words you always had. Thank you for your willingness and eagerness to help the people of Autauga County. I know this county will never forget you and your memory will live on at the Sheriff's Office. I'll make sure of that.

The convoy of patrol cars from Prattville to Clanton was an incredible sight. I am so honored to have been a part of that. As you watch over us from above, know that you had a tremendous impact on the people of your county, and we were blessed to have known you and work with you, Sgt. Burks.

Rest in peace. May God be with your family and friends in their time of sorrow. You will be greatly missed.
