Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Corporal Christopher Michael Metternich

Rest in peace Brother!

You will not be forgotten!

Sgt. David Munyan
baltimore Police / Motor Unit

September 3, 2006

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Everytime I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the man they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Corporal Metternich, especially to his wife. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. You will be in my thoughts.

From reading the reflections left for Christopher, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Christopher's life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Christopher's life was about so much more than the way he died. Christopher will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.

Corporal Metternich, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my late fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been three and a half years but we still miss him terribly.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

Christopher,

I can tell from looking at you that you were a great guy . . . it's so obvious. You were no doubt an excellent officer. I honor you Chris, your name, your memory and the warrior that you were. To Chris' family, I'd like to say my heart goes out to you, but I must say this . . . none of us want "to go" . . .we don't want to die young and leave all those we love behind . . . but if we must go, if our number's up, if our lord is calling us home, then if possible, if possible, let us go on duty, in uniform, proudly wearing or carrying our badge. Chris was on duty, in the city of Baton Rouge, doing that which he loved . . . being a policeman and protecting the citizens of his city, state and country. Being a policeman was not just his job, but mostly, it was who he was!! It was a calling only a few of hear . . . and he answered, and then, walked the path of the warrior.

Finally, please let me say this . . ."it is far, far better to have lived 31 years, than to have never lived at all."Back in the mid 80s, when the Chicago Bears ruled the NFL, the great running back Walter Peyton said "You are not gone until you are forgotten." We will never forget Chris, and he will never be gone. Ride high motorman. With brotherly love and utmost respect,

Jim Crotty (former Richmond, VA Policeman)

Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms (Ret.)

Chris, You will be remembered as one of the best and thank you for the advice at the 2004 rodeo in Baton Rouge. You touched many officers with your kindness and knowledge.
May you rest in peace and ride along side with all motor officers. As you know you had motor officers from around the country to ride with you on your last ride on earth, it was amazing.
To your wife, Chris was admired by more than you could imagine and any of us will be here for you anytime you need. God bless you and the kids.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriffs Office

Chris,

Thank you for your encouraging words during the rodeo in Charleston, S.C. I needed a partner to ride to the colliseum that day, even though we got lost on the interstate. You touched a lot of peoples' lives and will be missed!!!
God bless your family, and friends! They are in our thoughts and prayers!

Mrs. Metternich,

Words cannot express how sorry I am to hear of this tragedy. I wish I could say something to help ease your pain, however I have firsthand knowledge that there is nothing that anyone can say or do to take the pain away. My husband was killed in the line of duty last year in a car accident during a pursuit. He was 32 years old and our son was 5 months old at the time. I can't say I know exactly what you're thinking or feeling, but our situations are very similiar. The only advice I can offer is simply to trust that God with be with you. I know that's not the easiest thing to do right now, but He hasn't left you. Lean on Him and He will carry you and your family. I pray that you will find comfort from God now and always.

While it is no consolation for your loss, my heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family and fellow officers of Corporal Metternich.

While I did not have the privilege to have known him personally, I am certain that he has found a place in heaven through his selfless service to those he swore to protect.

Rest in peace my friend; those of us who remain will cover your post on the thin blue line.

I HOPE THIS BRINGS COMFORT TO YOU ALL

"HEAVEN'S BEAT"

HE’S WALKING A BEAT IN HEAVEN,
WITH A NEW PARTNER TO HELP HIM ON,
UP BEFORE THE FIRST LIGHT OF MORNING,
WITH A SAD SMILE GREETING THE NEW DAWN.

HIS BADGE GLOWS BRIGHTLY WITH GLORY,
HIS BOOTS ARE STILL SHINY BLACK,
FOR THERE’S NOT MUCH DUST IN HEAVEN,
EXCEPT FOR SOME STARDUST ON HIS HAT.

THERE’S NOT MUCH TO DO,
FOR A COP IN BLUE,
ON HEAVEN’S LONELY BEAT.
DRY A LITTLE ONE’S TEARS,
SOOTHE AWAY SOME FEARS,
OR JUST WALK THE GOLDEN STREETS.

HEAVEN CAN BE,
A SAD PLACE TO BE,
FOR A COP WHO FELL TOO SOON.

WALKING THIS LONELY BEAT,
AMONG THE SUN’S FADING HEAT,
HE SMILES SADLY AT THE RISING NEW MOON.

ONCE IN A WHILE,
A STRAY TEAR WILL FALL,
EVEN THOUGH HEAVEN’S NOT SUPPOSED TO HAVE ANY PAIN.

THINKING ABOUT THE WIFE,
HE LEFT BEHIND,
HIS ARMS ACHE TO HOLD HER JUST ONCE AGAIN.

HE’S WALKING A BEAT IN HEAVEN,
WITH OTHERS WHO FELT THE FALL,
BROTHERS TO ONE ANOTHER,
THEIR NAMES PROUDLY ON THE WALL.
