Upon the markers of their graves
Our heroes etched in names we save
For all the life they gave with pride
To keep the peace within life's stride

To honor serve and do their best
To keep us safe through any quest
They gave up what was theirs to share
Their spirits shall be always near

No fear within the hearts and minds
To keep us safe within our times
The glory that is ours to see
Those special hearts of bravery

They have walked where no man dare
Their lives in danger with no care
For they have given all they could
For their courage we have stood

In awe of every one who gave
His life for others who they saved
So we will know their contribution
Their firm resolve and resolution

For those they left with hearts so broken
In every whispered word that's spoken
We bow our heads in confirmation
In every word life's revelation

Those who stand within their shoes
Will follow courage as they choose
And give to all the best they had
They carry on with spirits glad

We will know that they walked through
With colors bright and hearts so true
No Island stands alone they say
For heroes they are born this way

Protecting those with loyalty
A glimpse of so much royalty
Within the years of courage bound
These officers have earned their crown

Upon the earth we shall remember
The special goals and all their thunder
That proves a hero came our way
Who left their hearts on earth to stay.

Back in the late 1970's I had the priviledge of working with Raymond Metternich, Chris' father. He always had a smile. While Chris worked at LSUPD in motors, we were on a Presidential escort and I saw Chris smiling. I knew then, he was Ray's son. I told Chris to come over to the Baton Rouge Police Department and consider riding motors with us. He did make the transfer and when time came he was assigned to motors. I was a shift Sergeant and I willingly took Chris on my shift. Chris never could get mad, always had a smile, and would do anything to help anyone.

Chris you will always be in our hearts forever. We are truly blessed that you chose to work with us. I promise that we will take care of Lisa, Sage, and Alexa as they are part of our family.

Rest in Peace.

Baton Rouge Police Motor Division

To the Family, Friends and fellow brother and sisters of Cpl. Chris Metternich,
I worked with Chris a few times while working in Baton Rouge. He was a great guy and he will be deeply missed by all. I wanted to post a poem for Chris, but the only one I could find had already been posted. I searched and located another on the NLEOMF website...

WEARERS OF THE WINGS
by 1st Lieut. George E. Fusco, Sr
Retired Montgomery County Police

For many long years you gave your best
Envied by some, admired by the rest,
Giving your all, yourself, your time
To make us the best, your mountain to climb.

Confidence you had, plus spirit and drive
You gave it to others, and kept it alive,
To young men just starting, one after another
You'd reach out your hand, and act as big brother,

Some men and women of our department, who serve at our side
Once lined the streets, and watched as you'd ride,
Sitting straight on your motor, as you led a parade
Never will you know, the impressions you made.

We remember the times, on calls not "serene"
The comfort we felt when you came on the scene,
Some memories are dim, but joy is derived
At times in the past, when your motor arrived.

You impressed by appearance, not plot, nor plan
A full time policeman, one hell of a man,
You showed us pride, intetgrity, and guts
A shining example , in breeches and putts.

The debt that is owed by the men in our ranks
Was often repaid, with a handshake and "thanks",
The friendship we share, surpassing all others
We , men and women of the badge, together as brothers and sisters.

It's hard to find words to say all the things
To cover the feelings on what memory brings,
Somewhere you know, how much you are missed
By those many hundreds that make up the list.

We feel you were taken, to fill God's Master Plan
To shape up His Heaven, as only you can,
You were loved and respected, from boss to recruit
So look down on us now, and take our salute.

Dedicated to all " Wearers of the Wings", The MotorMen

I thought this was a beautiful poem.

Godspeed my brother, till we meet again.

Policeman's 23rd Psalm

The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want,
His comforting hand reduces fear to naught;
He makes me walk through streets of crime,
But He gives me courage and peace of mind.

He leads me by still waters in the path I trod,
And He says in Romans I'm a "minister of God,"
He leads me in righteousness as He restores my soul,
For His name's sake He keeps me whole.

When I walk through death's valley, right up to the door,
I will fear no evil, for He comforts me more;
For Thou art with me every step of the way,
As thy rod and thy staff protect me each day.

He prepares a table, especially for me,
As I work daily among life's enemies;
He gives me authority to uphold the law,
And He anoints my position in the midst of it all.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me,
Each day of my life through eternity;
As I long to hear Him say, "Well done...,"
When I lay down my life, my badge, and my gun.

Recently at Charleston I had a chance to meet with Chris and Crew. Though I had only new Chris for 4 years or so he always made you feel that you had known him all yor life. He had the type of personality that was so positive and upbeat you couldn't help but laugh and have a good time around him. I'm truely glad that I took the time to go to Charleston not knowing what the future held for Chris. He and Motor Unit Crew have always made me feel like family, even though I live far away. Chris you were truely a great friend and MOTORMAN, I will miss you deeply, I am a better person for having met you during my life.
