Reflections for Police Officer Joselito Alvarez Barber

Officer Barber, I never knew you but wish I had. A year ago my wife's son (a Border Patrol Agent) lost his life in an on duty vehicle accident. Last Saturday my wife met your parents at the Wa. COPS meeting. I couldn't attend but she told me all about them. Someday I hope to meet them in person. It's too bad that we are joined by such tragic circumstances. As a former Deputy Sheriff I have the utmost respect for you and all like you who do a thankless job under dangerous conditions. Your legacy will live on forever and your family is so rightfully proud of you. Rest easy officer Barber, others have your watch here now.

Joselito:

I was thinking of you today and wishing I could have been in court for Rivas' sentencing. I met your family a little while ago while they were touring the precinct, the love they have for you and the silent strength they showed was truly humbling.

I never had the opportunity to meet you, but you were obviously a great young man with great roots.

Sleep well, I pray that today brought a small amount of comfort to your family.

I hope and pray the proceedinggs that occured today brought some sory of healing and closure to all involved. I know each person you had an impact on will have their moments but we will all make it through just fine. You are a hero to more than you know. (c)2004

Officer Barber,

I watched part of the sentencing today where Ms. Rivas was given 20 years. While this will never bring you back, I hope it brings peace to your family. Your sister is so inspiring and your fiancee very strong... They will always love you.

My heart goes out to you and your family.

Joselito,

I am so glad to hear that she took responsibility for what she has done. Your parents spoke very highly of you and I am sad that I wasn't able to meet you in person. Thank you for your dedication and service.

OFFICER BARBER I was happy to see that the women who caused your death has taken responsibility for your death and her actions, hopefully she will serve the entire term she has agreed to, for the family and friends of OFC BARBER no amount of time will bring him back but everyday we put on the badge and uniform we do it in his honor and the others who have gone before him. I cannot believe its been a year already. Time has gone by so fast, and many things in our lives have changed. Its very sad that your not here to share with us, but I know your watching up there, smiling down on us. We will never forget you, as you have made a lasting impression on our lives, and for that, we honor you. You are friend, family, and most importantly, brother. Officer Barber,
One year ago, your life was cut short here on earth, and you were called home. As the years continue to pass, your legacy of bravery will continue to live. Thank you from a grateful citizen.

Lito,

It'll be almost your 1yr. death anniversary. But yet it just seems like yesterday. It's been really tough on me this past year since your passing, even tho the last time I saw you was about a year before your tragic death. When I first heard the news from a mutual friend by a phone call, it felt like I was struck in the heart with a knife. I couldn't believe my ears! I cried instantly and cried even more when I saw the breaking news. I don't think I've ever mourned for someone as hard as I've mourned your death besides the death of my Lola. And unlike my grandparents who have passed and others in my life, your life was cut way too short! I've gone thru several deaths in my life and yet nothing compares to yours. I cried so much, I had a gigantic headache for days! The memories I have of you, I will always and forever remember and cherish. Especially of the year we worked together at JCP. Even tho you were only about 18 then, I already saw how much heart you had in serving your community. I didn't know then that someday you'd be a police officer, I only saw you being security. Even when that wasn't really your job, that we were both on the floor as retail sales clerks, you never hesitated to call the guys upstairs whenever you saw suspicious activity. You then left the floor to become one of the guys upstairs and I definately missed your awesome attitude on the floor. You've got that smile that brightens up any room! I still can't believe your gone. I miss you dear friend. I just hope you truly are resting in peace wherever you are. That surely you are surrounded by others who have passed, loved ones, friends, comrades, acquaintances. And that you all are watching over us and are helping guide us towards the right path, whichever it may be. That you hear all our prayers and know that you will never ever be forgotten. See you one day dear friend.

Lito - I was moved and warmed by the tribute paid to you at the FACES Conference in 2006. When I saw your mom, eyes full of tears and love, seated at the table of honor, I could only bend down and say "I'm so sorry, Mitz" then hug her and kiss the top of her head. The pictures that were displayed on the slideshow were of a fine and spirited child, boy, young man, and mature adult full of love and sincere pride in the work that he was doing and the people around him. I have seen your name in the wall that honors the fallen officers, in the SPD side of the new Justice Center. You are there among the many honored from early days gone by in Seattle. There you are - a strong Filipino man, who stood by others and made them proud. You have graced this world with your life - and memories that will not be forgotten. Peace.

Officer Barber,

I don't know you. I never did. But I do know that you had a bright future ahead of you that was tragically cut short by a deranged individual. I really don't know what to say because I can't explain how I'm feeling right now. I look up to you Officer Barber, I wish to wear the same badge you did, and serve the Seattle Police Department like you did. Rest in Peace, you will never be forgotten. Thank you for your service.

Hi Joselito! I never had the opportunity to work with you but I remember seeing you in the PCT while you were on your FTO Phase. I had the opportunity to meet your family while standing guard at the accident location and got a chance to read a little bit about you which was very interesting. I have no doubt in my mind that you really loved being a police officer as I really love this job. I currently work with a few of your academy mates and whenever I see their pin honoring you I too reflect on your life and feel a little safer knowing you are watching over us. We'll talk again one day brother.

Mahal Katal Lito.
I probably spelled that wrong even though I teased you with it on the first day we met.
We were all so happy that after your training you returned to our areas.
Lito, you surprised me when you came way south of your area to back me up on a simple shake & took the chance of having your ear talked off. That smile you gave when you said you didn't mind the talking and I knew that you wanted to make sure we were just all safe.
Thank you for sharing yourself and your outlook in this job. So many people want so much. I just hope that we can all follow through with your dream and the want to make changes. We all make mistakes and hope to make better choices. Some people seem to never change no matter how many chances they are given. I hope that all who read these realize that we all need to follow through with your dreams and the chance to make changes where they are needed.
To Lito! To Change!
Mahal Katal
