You have done so much for people in the city you can't even imagine. My thoughts go out to your family, friends and Reading police officers. This was a senseless act that took an important person away from this city. You will never be forgotten.

Scott, You were such a fun loving guy. You loved to pick on my all the time and tell me how i was to young for a boyfriend and how you were going to move your cars off the road when i started driving. I loved your straight face smile!! Dont worry about the boys my dad will take them under his wing! If only you saw how many people came to pay their respects to you, you would be amazed.
You will be missed by all, but never forgotten!! <3kelly

My deepest sympathies to the family of Officer Wertz. I lost my father in July of 1989 due to a police chase, and I deeply understand the pain that goes along with the loss of a loved one who also was a police officer. I can tell you that it will never go away, but it will slowly get easier to deal with. I recommend highly the COPS organization, Conerns of Poilice Survivors, they are a group made of police survivors and can help everyone in the family to cope with this sudden loss. God Bless your family and keep them safe.

What a beautiful tribute yesterday to our fallen brother. When the bagpipes played "Amazing Grace" the wind blew through the trees and I know it was Scott in that wind wishing all of us peace. Trish, I wish you and the boys that peace. To my brother in blue...

Dear Wertz Family,
I attended Scotty's services yesterday at the Sovereign Center, and I was touched by many things. I was touched by the support of the police departments from all over. What a sad yet beautiful experience to see all of those police officers filing in two-by-two and saluting their fallen brother. I was touched by the community support as well. Reading IS a violent city, but there are so many good people in thle city also. People stood outside for a long time in the heat just to come in and pay their last respects to a man who is truly a hero, giving the ultimate sacrifice for those who have no respect for the law or for the police. All of us police wives sat together grieving your loss with you and feeling your pain. Right now you are going through the nightmare of every one of us and my heart breaks for you. I wish there were some words of comfort I could give you that would ease your pain for just a little bit. I think what touched me the most about the whole memorial service was the dignity which you showed and the graciousness you showed to every single person that came through that line to pay their respects to Scotty and to you and your family. You were consoling people when they should have been consoling you. I can't imagine standing where you stood. I hope I never have to stand where you stood. Please know Mrs. Wertz, that if you ever need anything, all of us are here for you. I knew Scotty from working in St. Joe's ER for many years. He truly conducted himself in a professional manner, but always had a ready smile and was just a really great and funny guy. He will truly be missed. God bless you and comfort you in your time of sorrow and loss, and know that you always have friends that are praying for you and are here for you.
Rest in peace Brother.

Our family was a member of the softball community. My husband played for many years. He only knew Scott to say "hello" in passing. Although they were not close friends, we received several phone calls from my husband's former team mates telling us about the tragedy. Officer Wertz and Team mate Scott touched so many lives, our prayers go out to the Wertz Family.

i lived in nyc when sept 11 happened i saw funrals and belive when i say reading did a great job on your. and your follower officer where great. i dont no how they can handle it. this city needs help real bad. its sad it took this for the city to come together and relize wow look at this its getting bad. like i said you are a true hero and ill never forget about you. we need more people like you in reading that will go above and behond to make this city safe for us to live in again. i was thinking bout moving out the city but then i thought 2 times and said you no this city is not that bad its what you make of it. ?I mean the city has its good things and bad things just like every city but reading is just so small it seems like its always in your backyard. so now me and my family are buying a house in reading and are going to try to make sum changes around reading we want to open a new park cause we have a small business. and if we do we would like your familys ok to use your name for the park. so every on ecan remeber you.thank you very much.

Scott,
I did not know you personally but I am now getting the wonderful and honored opportunity to know you through these reflections. Being an ex-police officer, I know the brutality of the streets but I also know the feeling when you make someone's day. When I heard the news, it made me sick as once a cop, always a cop. You are a hero and you died for doing what you believed in. I will pray for the Wertz family to find strength in this time as well as pray for all law enforcement officers that sacrifice their lives every day.
Thanks Scott for everything you did and thank you Reading Police Dept. for your continued courage!!

My thoughts and prayers are with your family, friends and brothers at RPD.
