"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

My son,

December 7th approaches as the day for sentencing your killer. As our family prepares our thoughts for words to share with the judge, your memory resonates on what a fine son you were. As deeply and difficult this has been to relive and relate, I will go through this to express my love for you. Your sister has become an outstanding deputy sheriff and I know you would be proud of her. Your wife is so strong to be so young and endure this tragedy. She remains our daughter (in-law) and we love her like we love you. Your mother, what a fantastic woman she is. Her tears only express her outward feelings of the tremendous loss she has inside, but she remains that strong mother you knew, going through this pain daily and never complaining. I miss those days when we would see each other (and you in uniform) and as we parted, that hug you gave. I will never forget that nor will I ever forget who you are, my son, Michael!

The Callin Family.

It is said that the character of a man is reflected by what others say about you. Debbi and I did not have the pleasure of knowing Michael, but we have become close to you, Dave and Anna. Everyone we have spoken to that knew Michael spoke of his kindness, his servant heart, his sense of humor, his love of family and devotion to Vickie, and his deep love of our Lord Jesus. Michael touched so many lives in his all too short life. And everyone he touched became a better person. Dave, Anna, Christina, Vickie, and family, our prayers and thoughts are with you. We will do our part to keep Michael's memory alive.

My thoughts are with your loved ones, as they remember the day, one year ago, that forever changed their lives. I know in some respects the past year seemed like an eternity, and in other ways, August 2, 2006 feels like yesterday.

My thoughts are with your loved ones on this first anniversary of you being called away from duty. There are no words I can offer to help them with their grief except to keep your memory alive by telling stories about you to anyone that will listen. Your memory will forever be carried in the many broken hearts that have been left behind and they will never let you be forgotten. Continue to keep watch over your loved ones, wrap your wings around them and protect them. Let them feel your presence as you stand next to them. You are a true hero and heroes are never forgotten.

Michael,

My words wont come close to describing who you truly were. I pray they find there way to you anyway. Before now, I never believed in a word called "Hope". I thought it was a word to merely ease the pain of a life destined to fail. Michael Callin, you proved me wrong. Only God knows how you found a way to give Hope to people you never even met. I suppose that runs in your family, because they are the strongest people I have ever met. I think of them and somehow find strength to keep fighting. Thank you for reminding me that God never gives up on us. Thank you for consuming my thoughts when I want to give up. Thank you for allowing God to use you to bring me back to Him. And because we share the same Savior, that makes you my brother. Not only are you a Hero, you showed others how to be one.

Mike,

I have visited this site so many times in the past year, but I have never been able to leave a message. I wear the sherrif's star every day on my uniform to honor you and Ben, just above your pin with your badge information. Your life was an example of what it means to be sold out for God. Your death served to remind me of brief life can be and that none of us knows if our home will be on earth or in heaven in the next second. (Maybe if we did, maybe if we lived our lives with one eye on heaven we would be better people) Your death has made me a better prayer warrior for my family and friends and for law enforcement officers in general. This year has been tough on those left behind. The only consulation is that we know where you are and that someday soon we will see you again. Wish you and Ben could talk, he misses you. I miss the sound of you guys cutting up and laughing.

Dear Michael,
I just wanted to let you know I ran into one of your friends on the highway heading to Melbourne Beach last weekend.....we both proudly displayed YOUR name on the back of our vehicles. Even though that person and I had never met, once we knew you were the connection that brought us together, big smiles filled all faces in both cars! Your dad is hanging in there and talks about you every day. He brags about you still, and brags even more about how wonderful Christina is doing on the job. She calls him daily and they trade cop stories, much like you did with him. Her determination to follow in your footsteps is amazing. The OCSO have embraced her and keep watch over her in your honor. Your mom & Vickie are two tough ladies of faith, and they are coping the best they know how. I can't believe it's almost been a year.....it feels like you left us yesterday. I'm getting choked up as I write this so I'm gonna run, hug my boys, and tell them the brave story of Michael Callin.....again. They love hearing about you! We love and miss you, and know you're patroling heavens gates. Thanks for watching over us, our favorite guardian angel!

Michael,

There are very few memories from my "growing up" years that do not have you and your smile. Every church outing, you were there. Always ready to make someone laugh. Always willing to give a hug. You are such an example of true Christian love. You will always be loved and missed.

Mike, you are such a great inspiration on what and how a Godly man is, how a husband, son, brother, and friend should be. Your are greatly missed, but we all know that God has a greater plan. I see your goofy grin every day in pictures in the kitchen from my brothers wedding. You are missed so very much. Don’t have to much fun up there with out us!

Michael, some time has now past since God called you home, but your goofy laugh and your friendly attitude is still fresh on my mind. I remember when I first met you at BCM and we realized that you and my sister worked together at the Com Center. You immediately began talking to me as if you had known me for years (I later realized that it was one of your gifts). You quickly turned the conversation over to how you were going to be an Orange County Deputy just like your dad. You talked about your father like a child at playground tells other kids that their dad is the best. I was always very amusing to see how you would incorporate your dad into our conversations/cop talk.

At the day of the celebration of your life, it was so awesome to see that you lived your life as an ambassador of Christ. You life ministered to all those that had the honor of attending. Your zeal was very contagious, and your Godliness was evident. I keep a sticker of your name on the window of my patrol car as daily reminder of the danger of what we do. It is with great honor that I tell people that inquired about the sticker, what a man of God you were. Your legacy will not be forgotten.
