Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Michael Anthony Callin

I can't describe the emptiness that we feel. Mike was an awesome man of God. Mike's smile would cast a light on the darkest moment. I remember the times that I would visit my wife at the communication center. Mike would always be smiling. I would sometimes sit and watch Mike work and all he would talk about is the police academy and how excited he was to be a deputy. Tammie recalls his sweet spirit and how much he wanted to marry a good christian woman. Well Mike, you did both, and the legacy that you are leaving behind will carry on forever. God bless you my brother. We look forward to seeing you again someday.

As a retired police officer who has experienced a fellow officers death in the line of duty, my heart and condolences go out to the Callin family and to his Orange County fellow officers.

I have a son Darryl who worked with Mike and know therefore what a good person and officer Mike was. I only met Mike once on a golf course, but when a tragedy like this happens, you feel that you have a personal connection with that person.

God Bless Mike and his family.

To the family of Deputy Callin. Nothing I say can stop the hurt you feel; but know this, those of us left behind will pick up his watch and try to live up to the sacrifice he laid down.

Rest in Peace Brother, we will take it from here.

I cannot believe we are here again trying to give solace to family, friends, loved ones and sisters and brothers who wear the badge of law enforcement. What is wrong with society today that some people out there feel it necessary to kill another individual. I cannot comprehend this. Please, to all the family, and loved ones know that D/S Callin is in a much better place right now and he will suffer no more.
"When God Made Peace Officers"
Unknown Author
When the Lord was creating peace officers, he was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, "You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one"
And the Lord said, "Have you read the spec on this order?" A peace officer has to be able to run five miles through alleys in the dark, scale walls, enter homes the health inspector wouldn't touch, and not wrinkle his uniform."
He has to be able to sit in an undercover car all day on a stakeout, cover a homicide scene that night, canvass the neighborhood for witnesses and testify in court the next day."
He has to be in top physical condition at all times, running on black coffee and half-eaten meals. And he has to have six pairs of hands."
The angel shook her head slowly and said, "Six pairs of hands...no way."
"It's not the hands that are causing me problems." said the Lord, "It's the three pairs of eyes an officer has to have."
"That's on the standard model?" asked the angel.
The Lord nodded. "One pair that sees through the bulge in a pocket before he asks, 'May I see what's in there sir?' (When he already knows and wishes he'd taken that accounting job.) Another pair here in the side of the head for his partner's safety. And another pair of eyes here in the front that can look reassuringly at a bleeding victim and say. 'You'll be all right ma'am.' When he knows it isn't so."
"Lord," said the angel, touching his sleeve, "rest and work on this tomorrow."
"I can't" said the Lord, "I already have a model that can talk a 250 pound drunk into a patrol car without incident, and feed a family of five on a civil service pay check."
The angel circled the model of the peace officer very slowly. "Can it think?" she asked.
"You bet." said the Lord. "It can tell you the elements of a hundred crime scenes; recite Miranda warnings in his sleep; detain, investigate, search, and arrest a gang member on the street in less time than it takes five learned judges to debate the legality of the stop...and still keeps its sense of humor."
"This officer also has phenomenal personal control. He can deal with crime scenes painted in hell; coax a confession from a child abuser; comfort a murder victim's family; and then read in the daily paper how law enforcement isn't sensitive to the rights of criminal suspects."
Finally, the angel bent over and ran her fingers across the cheek of the peace officer. "There's a leak." She pronounced. "I told you that you are trying to put to much in this model."
"That's not a leak," said the Lord, "it's a tear."
"What's the tear for?" asked the angel.
"It's for bottled-up emotions; for fallen comrades; for commitment to that funny piece of metal called his badge; for justice."
"You're a genius." said the angel.
The Lord looked somber. "I didn't put it there." he said.
D/S Callin will always be a hero and he will never, ever be forgotten, and he and his family are in our prayers.
God Bless You All

To the family and friends of Deputy Mike Callin,
Although I did not know Mike personally, I am saddened by his tragic loss. There are no words of comfort that I know of to ease your pain. Please know that all of Mike's brothers and sisters at OCSO are here for you during this difficult time. The department has lost a brave soul but we will carry on and aspire to be the type of deputy Mike was: hardworking, dedicated and loyal.
To Mike,
I wish I could have known you. You fought a heroic fight and now you can rest. Thank you for all that you have done and please watch over us. You will not be forgotten.

Rest in peace Deputy Callin, what senseless act. My prayers and thoughts are with your family and agency in this difficult time. The people of Orange County have lost a hero. A "brother" of ours and my former co-worker in Illinois, Chris Hylton, was a Deputy Sheriff in Florida, I think in Orange County and he too lost his life several years ago, but off-duty when he was hit by a drunk driver.
