Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Michael Anthony Callin

Vicki, Mom, Dad and Family,
We just hit 2 months. It seems sooo much longer! I pray and pray that ya'll are doing better than I am! I can't seem to shake this pain, this loss. I can't tell if my pain stems from my own, selfish loss, or the realization of what each of you must be going through.
The faith each of you demonstrated only strengthens my own. This is the path, I think, that will heal us all. God bless you!

I was not blessed with the opportunity to meet Michael on this earth; though I know we will meet in Heaven one day. If there was one thing that jumped out at me about Michael, it's that he loved the Lord.

As soon as I came home from work that day and turned on the news. My heart broke when I heard what had happened. I stopped what I was doing and began to pray for Michael and his family. I hoped so much that there would be a miracle but I guess God had other plans.

I would like to thank Michael's family for the beautiful and touching service you had for him. Thank you for allowing the public to share the experience; it gave me the chance to know more about a great man. It was a wonderful reflection of someone who obviously had a big impact on this world and on everyone he met.

I would like to offer my condolences and most heartfelt sympathies to Michael's family, friends and to everyone at the Orange County Sheriff's Office. You are still in my thoughts and always in my prayers. May God bless you and give you peace as your hearts heal from this tragic loss.

To Michael, I look forward to meeting you brother. The Lord must have felt the same way, that's why he brought you home to be with Him. Thank you for your service; your sacrifice will not be forgotten.

I really enjoyed working with you in Sector 4 for the short time I was there. You always had a smile on your face whenever I saw you. It was also heart warming to know that there was another young man like myself who had a passion for law enforcement. You always kept me positive whenever I saw you. Continue to watch over us my brother for we know that we will see you again one day. You will never be forgotten and always remembered!!!!!

Looking back to the many memories of you Mike I can't help but know I had an angel beside me. You always put others before your needs. Fixing broken things or doing a task for someone always came first no matter how busy your day may be. Your love for GOD was shown daily in so many ways. The one that stands out the most is the way you ALWAYS encouraged people to have faith and believe. Jesus Christ came first in your life. You are a true child of GOD. Well done, thou good and faithful servant.

For Michael's family,
Having recently learned of your loss, we are deeply touched by the comments made by Michael's collegues and friends. Our heartfelt prayers are that God may give you his comfort and that Michael's faith and life continue to inspire and guide those who were fortunate to know and work with him. Psalm 119:9 "How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word."

He was a fellow class mate at Columbia College. In those few short weeks he had made friends with everyone in class. He was always smiling, polite, kind and easy to get along with. He loved his family dearly and always mentioned them. It is a sad loss that took me and some of the other classmates by surprise. He had so many plans, and dreams. He had such an angelic expression when he smiled. Such a young man, so full of life giving and kind especially with his elders, always respectful. One of a kind, that will be missed by many.

I never knew you but, our brotherhood bonds us and, although the sting of your loss will fade with time, the shining light that was your life will live in our hearts and memories forever.

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Everytime I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the man they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Deputy Callin, especially to his wife. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. You will be in my thoughts.

From reading the reflections left for Michael, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Michael's life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Michael's life was about so much more than the way he died. Michael will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.

Deputy Callin, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my late fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been three and a half years but we still miss him terribly.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

MIKE, I did not realize how long I have known you brother until you were gone. I first met you when you were a dispatcher and I was on light duty. All we talked about was motorcycles and being a deputy sheriff. Years went by and we spoke via the computer(MDS). I saw you again when you did two ride alongs with me and again all we talked about was motorcycles and being a cop. I was reminded the other day of when you had my back at the comm center. Your were working Sec 4 dispatch and I was working on the Tactical Patrol Unit and I had my portable radio on the car to car channel and you were monitoring, just because you wanted to know what we were doing on the street. Well, Mike it just so happens that I got into a foot pursuit and no one heard me calling it out over the radio.. except YOU! You called for the BOYS to help me and we caught the bad guy. You had my back Mike.

Finally I was part time on the Motors Unit while you were also part time. The last class we had together was Laser class and the last day of the class was when they posted for the full time Motors position and you went on your lunch break and put in your tranfer request and was the first person to do so.

Mike, I am writing this to you because I know you are on your computer in the sky and checking on your fellow fallen hereos. I wanted your family to know what a great person you were Mike. I had the HONOR to Guard you at the vistitation and to be one of your paul bearers, with the Honor Guard. Yes it was very hard for me but it was the least I could do for such a great man! I had the privilege to ride with you on Motors on Earth and we will ride again in the SKY. LOVE YA MIKE

D/S Callin & Family,

My husband and I both attended the service and were present at the burial site. I am sad to say that this was my first LEO funeral. I know the service was a celebration of your life, but it's so hard not to be angry, bewildered, and sad at the same time. We have never met you, but you are our brother and have the utmost respect for you. I know you saw all of your brothers and sisters who attended, it really was an awesome site. To know that the LEO family from all over was there to pay their respects to someone doing a job that he loved. Watch over your family and we'll take it from here. Take care brother.

To the family of Michael we send our deepest condolences. The NYPD had the great opportunity of hosting the Orange County Sherrif's Office at our Intel Headquarters located in NYC. Amongst the guest was one individual, Dave Callin, who went above and beyond, both professionally and personally at all times, to make sure the job got done. Dave, I hope you and your family find strength in the future. In the short time I've known you, you are an outstanding LEO and person. Know that the apple never falls far from the tree. We are all praying for you and your family. Peace.

Vicky and Family,

Even though I had only met Mike once I know he was the love of Vicky's life and best friend and all she talked about. I know right now is hard but I want to say that their life as a couple and the example he left on everyone he knew has changed my life and made me realize not to take things for granted and that issues that we get caught up in or down about are not as important as our family and relationship with Christ. Always know I am here for you Vicky.

Mike,

You touched so many lives in the short time you were here on this earth. I remember arriving at the scene and seeing the paramedics working on you, and seeing how injured you appeared. I wanted just one more funny conversation with you as we had in past joking with one another. The unit misses you as well, but they heal more everyday.

So many people thought so highly of you, and future here on earth was bright. Your parents did such an awesome job raising you. Your young wife I feel for her so much, and see how much you loved one another.

The day of your funeral was without question my hardest day in 22yrs of Law Enforcement. Seeing all those pictures of you growing up, and spending time with your family. Your love for animals, fishing, and caring for others. That goofy smile of yours. Then we got to the graveside, and it began to rain it was like you were giving us all strength. You give me strength Mike. You have shown me how important it is to love one another. How our time here is so precious, and how important my daughter is to me. That day I just came home and hugged her. Thanks for showing me the error of my ways. Your one special person.

Thanks again for touching my life as well.

Chatted with you in the hallways of Columbia College. A smile, a good word, a spark of joy you always shared. It was a great honor to have been in the presence of an angel. Now your smile lingers, your word echoes and the spark of joy has sparked some tears in my eyes...Heaven now has another soldier...Thanks Michael, you are the best.
