Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Michael Anthony Callin

My son,

I just returned from the National Memorial in DC where I saw so many come to your name. There were many that came and hugged, kissed, knelt, and prayed at this solemn yet honorable event. I have cried with many a father, mother, and wife over their loss as well. I wept each day while there thinking of how much you are missed as I saw so many reminders of the man you are. Your wife, Vicki, is so strong having to endure this tragedy and we are so proud of her. Your sister, Christina, now on patrol in the county, reminds us of her continued looking up to you for the brother and deputy you were. And of course your mother, Anna, what a remarkable ladie she is. Although this has been the most difficult time we could bear, our Lord has sustained us to continue on. Know that you are constantly on our minds because of the love we have for you. You have entered into that sweet rest you so deserved and as each day passes, we truly count as a blessing-a day closer to being with you again in that sweet rest. Our agency has come around all of us and surrounded us with love and consolation because of you. They have made us so proud by their continued honor of DFC Michael Callin!!!! I love you my son! Bye for now!!

Mike, when I think of you I always think about watching as you and Jimmy sat at his kitchen table joking and laughing. Jimmy misses you everyday, he misses fishing and playing Golf with you, he hasn't been fishing since you have been gone. He said just the other day he picked up his phone to call you and then realized that you were not going to answer anymore. He is doing well, he has been transferred to the Detective Division, Property Investigations. We all miss you, you are now, have been and always will be a hero who will always be missed and remembered, God bless you

Hey Big Mike,
I still think about you all the time and constantly smile at all the bad jokes you told me :) You always tried your best to help me laugh and kept my spirits up during my illness. You'll always be a special part of my heart. I'll see you again one day!!

I wrote this for Mike and all the others that have died protecting us. I know Mike, only briefly and could tell what a great person he truly is/was. We miss you Mike.

Our everyday sacrifice…

Everyday we wake up to protect you.
Yet everyday we are scrutinized for it…
Everyday we see and deal with things that would break a weaker person…
We managed to keep going, knowing that what we do
is slowly de-humanizes us..
Emotions are no longer valid, laughter is now seen as some twisted joke,
Everyday it’s taking its harsh toll on our minds, our bodies and most of all
the people we love.
Making us rough around the edges,
but then everyday little kids come up to us and genuinely smiles, so innocent to what’s out there.
Then all of sudden our jobs are worth it all.
Making us forget how many bodies we have counted, or how many times we have been kicked, punched, or spit on.
Everyday one of us gives you our lives,
leaving behind our wives, husbands, children, our mama, our daddies, brothers and sisters.
While we line up in rows standing at attention and setting Doves free to mourn our loss, while we watch an unexpecting family cry with their heads in their hands, not understanding why…
You make a scene for the Punk who took another person who pledged for your life…
A person who without ever meeting you,
never once thought to care about the consequences of what our badges ask of us.
A person who everyday makes that sacrifice and only thinking of that little difference that she/he can make, or that one life they can save…
This is our everyday sacrifice.

Michael, you're not only my husband but my best friend. While you were here with me, you were constantly making me proud. Even though you are no longer here, you are still making me so proud. I have met so many people that knew you. I have heard so many amazing stories of how you helped others out. Thank you for being the kind of man I was proud to be married to and the kind of person we can all strive to be. Thank you for teaching me so many things. Thank you for loving me. Though I never had the pleasure of meeting Michael Callin, I was recently blessed with the meeting of his wife, Victoria.
Michael, may you be at peace in the knowledge that, Vickie is an amazing woman...as if you didn't already know this. In the very short time that I have known her, it's obvious to me that, she is a very strong and very kind person. I know that you would be very proud of her. I have never lived through this kind of pain before, but I hope to play a small part, in helping Vickie to heal.
GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

Aloha Deputy Sheriff Michael Callin,
Thank you for your service and dedication to your community and your country. You and all officers that continue to lay your lives on the line and pay the ultimate sacrifice to keep our communities and country safe, will NEVER be forgotten.

I personally pledge, (after one of Hawaii's own, Honolulu Police Officer Steve Favela, lost his life in the line of duty protecting our Commander in Chief, President George W. Bush), to become a continuum of the ODMP light. That light is in the form of an ODMP tribute. People from all walks of life, regardless of age, race, religion, profession, education, and geographical location can share here. That "LIGHT" comes from within the heart and soul of every person who cares to share a word or two on behalf of each and every fallen officer. Every fallen officer is an hero. The ODMP; Officer Down Memorial Page gives us a place to come together and share our feelings as one family. May we find comfort as we give comfort to the families who have lost a loved one.

As we say in Hawaii, “We are`Ohana.” We are family. God Bless this fallen hero. May we embrace him as one of our own family member; our `Ohana. No one will ever be able to replace you for you were unique and very special. No one; not in this lifetime. May God allow you to rest in His Divine peace.

Deputy Sheriff Michael Callin, I wish you, your loved ones, your fellow officers, and friends, peace and love beyond all understanding.

--- May this Hawaiian prayer give all those who read it comfort. ---

THE PEACE OF " I "
KA MALUHIA O KA "I"

Peace be with you, All My Peace,
O ka Maluhia no me oe, Ku'u Maluhia a pau loa,

The Peace that is " I ", the Peace that is "I am".
Ka Maluhia o ka "I", owau no ka Maluhia,

The Peace for always, now and forever and evermore.
Ka Maluhia no na wa a pau, no ke'ia wa a mau a mau loa aku.

My Peace " I " give to you, My Peace " I " leave with you,
Ha'awi aku wau I ku'u Maluhia ia oe, waiho aku wau I ku'u Maluhia me oe,

Not the world's Peace, but, only My Peace,
The Peace of " I ".

A'ole ka Maluhia o ke ao aka, ka'u Maluhia wale no,
Ka Maluhia o ka "I".

To Vickie and the Callin Family. We are stilling missing Mike and his nightly phone calls. We talk about him all the time and tell people here about him and what a touching person he was. I used to joke with James about him gaining another son in Mike, and we really feel like we lost a son. I know that when we do come back into the house, it's will be tough not having Mike come up as soon as we pull in the drive-way. It's amazing how you can know someone for little over a year, and they can touch you so strong, like you've been knowing them for a life-time....We Love You Mike....

Our Prayers and Love always with you.
