Reflections for Police Officer Nick-Tomasito Birco

Hey Nick,
What should have been a wonderful holiday season was not because you were missing. I was fortunate enough to have people around me try to fill that void. Unfortunately it can never be filled. I opened up Holly's Christmas gift and it brought tears to my eyes, it was something you would have totally given me. For a moment I felt you were here. She brought gifts for the kids, just like you would. They were gifts that the kids loved just like you would get them. The death of another officer was hard to take it brought all those feelings back and now another family has to go through what yours did. It's not fair.

Birco!

This holiday has been tough for us, we miss you and our fallen brothers so much. I talked to Holly this week, and we just can't get over the fact that you're gone. I still see your smile and hear you talking...and talking..and laughing! My second phase recruit used to work out with you at 24hr. on Ocean, he told me about the "backpack" holding thing! HAAAAAAAAA. It didn't surprise me, you were an AN I MAL, as you used to say. Love and miss you, Semper Fi, Patty. Blessed holidays and new year for your family and friends.

You will be missed. You always took care of your nieces and nephews. You're an inspiration to me and made me want to be a SFPD police officer. I hope my my dad and your dad (Uncle Tom) agrees in the long run, but I applied myself to SFPD recently and hope I make it through the process. I understand what you worked and died for and want to help the community like you.

Birco,

I thought I was doing ok until I went to court yesterday. I saw someone looking at your name on the wall and I wanted to tell him to let you rest, but knowing you, you were probably talking his ear off! ;D
I couldn't even look at it, I need to do it like I did with Zak's- alone! When the night is calm and the time is right, I'll find my way to see you, just us friends and fellow Marines. You are not a spectacle to me, you are to be remembered and honored with respect and solely amongst family and friends. Now you know why...
This morning we celebrated Chu's 30th., I'm sure you woulda brought a pineapple! Haaa. Christine A. text me and said she missed you and said prayers, its hard for us Birco.
Happy belated 40th, you know I was there...love you my brother! Semper Fi.

Happy 40th Birthday Nick!

I am so sad that we all weren't able to share this with you in person. However, in spirit, you are in my thoughts and I am actually thinking happy thoughts of you today. That is why they call it a "happy" birthday, isn't it? Happy thoughts include the times we shared and just how much you made me laugh! Thanks for all the memories and Happy Birthday to you!

Hey Nick,
I have been missing you so much lately. I stayed up last night thinking about the last few times we spoke. The truth is I try to be happy but there is something missing. I never got a chance to tell you how much your friendship meant to me and the more I think about it I do not even think I knew how important you were to me till you were gone. I think it is so unfair that you are not here. I wait for your text-messages and daily phone calls and they never come. I still think this is all fake and that you will appear back in my life soon. I miss and love you.

Like many other police officers here, I visited this page after watching the press release given by the officer defending your actions and decrying the media for their handling of this affair.

I have visited SF several times and have found it to be a great city.

The last time I was there (Feb 2006) I cycled over the GG Bridge, you were probably patrolling the city. I would have liked to meet you, the tributes here testify to the fact that you were a brave and honorable officer.

No matter which country we are born in - police officers around the world feel the loss of another.

Rest in peace brother.

The world is a sadder place without you.

Thank you for being a great American. I don't know why things like this have to happen, but I thank God you were willing to put your life on the line for your fellow man. It was men and women like you who made this country great, and men and women like you who will keep it great.

Hey Nick,
This weekend the kids went to their Embassy Suite party. Although a lot of people supported our school fundraiser, nobody came close to buying as many cookies as you did. You set out on a mission to make my kids the top-sellers and you did it! Thanks for buying so many cookies from me. The kids had a great time at the hotel. Hah you told me I would have to buy all the cookies back if my kids didn't win..but they did thanks to you. I thought about you a lot this weekend. Thanks for making that possible.
Love you!

I was recently emailed video footage of one of your superior's defending your actions while on duty. Out of curiosity, I looked a litte further into how it went down. I congratulate you for your bravery on that day, and especially am extremely pleased with how your department defended you. If I was in California, I would love to work for San Fransisco Police. I know if you had to do it all over again, you'd still choose SFPD. Praises for your efforts, and you will never be forgotten. God Bless you brother in blue!

Birco!

I had breakfast with Holly and Claudia last week, we had a good time, I've met another wonderful person who loves you with all of her heart. Its truly great to know there are people who support us and live as productive citizens- nothing is given to us. One day at a time...no rush.

I went to visit you and Zak on Halloween and I have to tell you, it was really tough. It was my first visit since you passed and I walked up to you with tears, I was standing in front of two of my friends taken by spineless cowards! I was happy that you and Zak were together, but it shouldn't be that way, you know?! It seems to be getting worse on the streets, like its hunting season on us. Please continue to watch over us with the other Marines and Officers, we miss you with all of our hearts, I miss your smile and laugh- I miss every silly thing about you. We had fun...love you! You will be remembered at our Vet's/Marine Corps birthday dinner, we'll save you a piece of cake, you were probably our oldest Marine this year (haha, OG) because Borgen is in Iraq! Hey Nick,
Halloween came and went and I am reminded of last year's Halloween. This one was not the same. You invited the family and I over. You had decorated for Halloween and you were so enthusiastic (just like a child). You asked me what my daughter was going to be for Halloween and I told you a witch. You asked if she had a broom and I said no. The day before Halloween you arrived at the gym with a broom for her. You said no witch is complete without her broom. Your thoughtfulness was so sweet. But then everything about you was. I miss you so much. Love you!

Hey Nick:

I know your up there working hard, as you did on the street. I was putting together the up and coming thanksgiving lunch for Canon Kip and I remembered when I saw you coming down the hall, on your way to court, I could only see that smile, (can't see that far, old age)but you stopped to talk as always, you wanted to make sure you were on my list to help at the lunch, well my friend the old soldiers there would have talked your ears off, and they would have told you storys about the Philippines and WW2. As I get close to retirement, You were one of the young Officers who was going to take over and keep the city safe!! There were only 4 or 5 Flips when I came in and now there are over 100. Now you have to watch over the new kids and keep them safe, your know just a little word in their ear HAHA. Well my friend take care, REST IN PEACE (DUTY, HONOR,COURAGE) and my deepest empathy and condolences to the family, He was a great guy, good friend, and one special Police Officer
