Reflections for Police Officer Gary Frank Skerski

What a tragic event. Working just across the Delaware from Philadelphia, I woke to the report of this incident on the news. The news of your death made me sick to my stomach. I give blessings to you and your family, and our brothers and sisters of the Philly PD. I will be at your funeral to honor you. God Speed.

May you rest in eternal peace Officer Skerski. You came in for an overtime shift so that you could provide for your family and lose your life to a cowardly vermin that will never know the true meaning of being a man and a father.I am the same age as you and commend you for still showing such dedication to your profession and your dept. after sixteen years. My condolences to your family and the entire Philadelphia police dept.

A Part Of America Died,
Somebody killed a policeman today,
And part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect,
Will be buried with him at his side.
The suspect that shot him will stand up in court,
With counsel demanding his rights.
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,
And spend many long lonely nights.
The beat he walked was a battle field too
just as if he had gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
To his name they will add a gold star.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
In your town or mine,
While we slept in comfort behind locked doors,
A cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
And stands at each new rookies' side.
He answered the call,of himself and gave his all,
And a part of America died.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family and fellow officers of Officer Skerski.

While no one who wears a badge wants to be put into such a situation, you put yourself into the line of fire to protect those whom you might not have even known despite the danger. While I did not have the privilege to have known him personally, I am certain that he has found a place in heaven.

Rest in peace my friend; those of us who remain will cover your post on the thin blue line.

At the beginning of every shift, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.

Today, May 9, 2006 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Police Officer Gary Skerski who died in the line of duty just yesterday.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

Officer Skerski's sacrifice will never be forgotten.
