Merry Christmas Darryl. I remember when I was at your house in Alamo in about March or April one year and you still and your Christmas tree up. You could have taken it down earlier but your priorities were maintaining a trained and professional K9 unit and developing all of us into the best dog handlers we could be.

Darryl-
I think of you and speak of you often...reminded by funny things you said or did. Recently found some pics of one of our outings and felt like I won the lottery with found memories of you!! This day will forever be in my heart as the day we lost you but since it is May Day and that is a celebration of the Spring, I will also consider a day of rebirth. Your influence is felt in so many places by so many people and I just want to let you know that my family will celebrate your life today.

Darryl,

Another training day has come and gone and your presence is greatly missed. Your spirit lives on in those you had touched. Sundays aren't the same when training is going on.

Thinking of you on this training day.

I only met Darryl once, during a training weekend, yet his spirit touched my life. What a warm, caring, and truly gifted dog trainer.
It's not often you meet trainers who are truly willing to share their knowledge for the betterment of the dogs. To all of Darryl's friends and family, my heart goes out to you. Darryl, even in lives where you simply passed through, you made an impact. Rest in peace...

Darryl,
I heard about your passing shortly after it happened. I'm so glad I had a chance to catch up with you at least by telephone several months before... Though we had not been in close contact for a number of years (being far away geographically from one another), I look at your photo on this site and am reminded of your sincerity, kindness, sense of humor, craziness, loyalty, and great conversations we had. You were one of my first friends in the Bay Area, and I have great memories of the times we hung around together well before you joined SFPD. I still remember your very first German shepherd puppy, Wampum, and the joy you showed as a proud new dog owner/parent... It seems a lifetime ago. I am certain you left this earth as you would have wished, doing what you loved. You are missed, Darryl, but never forgotten!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Sarge,

The last time I got to see you was at Isaac's ceremony at Bayview, that's when I met Michelle Liddicoet. Ironically, she was one of the last to see you that night...we have since become friends and I thank-you for a new friend and even better, dependable K-9 handler. Blessed 232nd. USMC Birthday, Semper Fi!

It still doesn't seem real that you're gone...It seems like only yesterday that were were "talking shop." I've never met a more unselfish and giving person than you when it came to talking about K9 training. You were more than glad to share information for the betterment of police K9 as a whole, not like some "trainers" that think they are giving away their secrets. GOD must have needed a first rate K9 handler / trainer..... you are not forgotten.

Darryl, you were one of my closest friends. Along with Mike Poy, the three of us were inseparable from the time we first met in Junior High until I left California for college.

Living thousands of miles away, our lives eventually took different paths as we drifted apart, but the memories of the fun we had growing up never fade. You joined the armed services, and I lost track of you for awhile, but later I was happy to learn you'd found a place in law enforcement, where you could use your strong intellect and drive to distinguish yourself within the SFPD.

I was in the Bay Area this weekend visiting my family and wanted to pay my respects to you. I don't know where your remains are interred, and I couldn't get ahold of Mike, but in my search I stumbled on this website dedicated to your memory.

I'll always remember your smile and laugh, all the funny crazy shenanigans we got up to, as well as the serious conversations we had, thinking ahead to our futures. I'm struck by a conversation we had when we were 15 or 16, and very clearly remember you telling me you wouldn't live to see old age. You said you wouldn't make it past 30, and while I breathed a sigh of relief when you did, I didn't think you'd only have a little over another decade left. Your premonition seemed melodramatic at the time, and it's sad to realize that you somehow knew that you would live a concentrated and ultimately very rich life, but would leave us before any of us were ready to say goodbye. In your short time here, I'm very glad you were able to make a positive difference to the people around you as well as the fine animals of the K-9 unit you cared for.

Darryl, you were a special friend and a good kid who turned into a good man. I'm sorry you're not with us today.

Darryl, we just got back from DC for the memorial but im sure you knew that. It was tough seeing your name on the wall and remembering the good times and the laughs we all shared. There I'snt a day that goes by that we dont think of you or talk about you. I refuse to delete your number from my phone, I guess im still in denial..keep looking out for us and know that we miss you dearly.

This is so sad! You were so tragically taken and noone
had an opportunity to tell you good-bye or what you meant to them. You left huge shoes to fill. You were a
selfless person whose dedication and passion were
second to none. There are no words to describe the
sorrow of those who love and miss you daily. You were
an amazing man and a dog's best friend.
