I met Trooper Chavez when he was stationed in Zapata, Texas and throughout the year I had backed him up on several occasions while he conducted traffic stops.
We then became closer since he was the roomate to one of our agents and we talked and hung out at his house. We had some good times, you will be missed.
I remember Chavez as being "gunhoe" and very proud of his job!.
You will be missed!

Trooper Edward Chaves, I had the pleasure of working with D.P.S back in the early 80's. Let me say that if you were anything like the officers I had the honor of working with back then, all I can say is the State of Texas will miss you dearly, God bless you, and your family and one of the best departments I have every known. Well Ed, I hope you had a good seat to look down on us all yesterday. I know you were probably embarrased by all of the attention folks were giving you. You'd probably would just as soon stayed home and played your X-box or do some more decorating on the baby's room.

I'll tell you buddy, it was quite a turnout. The procession was well over three miles long! There were more black-and-whites in that motorcade than anyone could even count! Every intersection and every driveway was blocked from the church all the way to your new resting spot. I think every department in South Texas was there, dressed in their Class A's and sweating like crazy cause it was so hot! I don't think anyone complained about it though.

I want you to know that although we are hurting, we all gave each other strength. It was tough, but we got through it. I slept well last night for the first time since Tuesday. Somehow, I think I'm not the only one that finally got some rest. It was a tough week. I talked to German last night. He says that your family is feeling a little better now that the week is over. Besides, you know just how tough and stubborn you Chavez' folks are! I know they'll be fine. It'll just take some time.

Your parents picked out a really nice spot for you under a big tree...right next to one of the little roads in Valley Memoral Gardens. I think you'd like it. I drove back by there last night just to check on you. Man, there were enough flowers there on your spot that you could start your own flower shop!!

You know how you always gave me so much crap about being your "gringo" buddy? Well I had to laugh when I realized we buried my little "mexican" buddy on Cinco de Mayo! You would've got a good laugh out of that too! Knowing you, you'd have put on a dang sombrero if you could find one!

Like I said, I know you were probably just a little embarrased by the attention, but I hope just this once you didn't mind it. I know that all of the love and support shown to your family helped ease their pain just a little.

I want you to know that I'll help your family in any way that I can. Little Edward is going to have a gringo uncle whether he wants it or not! I only wish you could be here with us when he finally arrives. I know you'll be watching over us though.

I'm gonna miss you buddy. Who am I going to give my extra drunks to on STEP weekends?! Seriously though, I love you and will miss you alot. Let me know if you get any intel on a dope load...I'll try to take it down for you.

On Monday we received our awards at the Regional Office. When I was told of the accident on Tuesday I could not believe it. Your energy and attitude will never be forgotten. Trooper Chavez, Thank you for the services that you have given. You will never be forgotten. It is such a thankless job that most people don't even think about. I just wanted to say THANK YOU for all you have done. Even though I have never met you, I know that you will be missed oh so very much. In the last 2 weeks we had to bury one of our own.It is the hardest thing to ever have to go through. I hope that your family, friends and co-workers may find peace and comfort through GOD himself. May GOD bless us all and be with us. I know that my friends are waiting for you and will show you the ropes in HEAVEN. I just hope that someday people will realize what the word POLICE really means. Police officers, MEN and WOMEN both have families to go home to,just like everyone else. They all work an 8 hour shift just as anyone else does. Why do people think that they do not matter?
