Pat and I would like to express our deepest sympathy to Diana and Pierre’s family. We too like most, struggle with the question, why. Our answer has to be found in our faith in God. We have searched for a positive meaning for this tragedy, and came up with some answers. We have for the last few days discussed with our friends and family what happened. We have joined in with the sharing of feelings for Diana and Pierre, have touched on our own mortality, and communicated with more people than we would in a normal month. This has brought us closer to our families and friends. There will be a huge congregation at a Church to honor, and memorialize this wonderful man that touched our souls. We will do it in Pierre’s “New House”
Pierre had the unique ability to separate his job from his private life. He was the guy next door that went hunting, fishing, and to dog shows. Dog shows! This was one of many things he and Diana shared. He had a great sense of humor, and brought smiles and laughter to those around him. Diana, you and Pierre will always be in our heart, and prayers. Pierre, thank you for being a protector of justice, an amazing friend and love of Diana’s, and our friend. We will meet again.

I have been lucky to have a been a friend of Diana's for over 25 years. I only met Pierre a handful of times but knew well the joy he brought to my good friend. He was a delight to be around and was a dedicated deputy, father and husband.

I wrote this today to honor Pierre in his sacrifice:

The Warrior

A man, proud
A man, aloud
Volunteers to protect
all of those he's never met
even those who disrespect
his duty.

Pushing on
like a wildflower through the grass
it will not last long
but leaves its bravery
to the air.

With deepest respect and condolences,

Dearest Deputy Bain: How I wish I could ease the grief of your family and friends and co-workers. And I wish that citizens told you how much they appreciated your duty and dedication.

"Thank you" seems so inadequate, but it is heartfelt. Maybe you were one of the motors who came to the funeral of CHP Officer John Bailey (killed by a drunk driver) and if you did..please know it meant so much to see you all come to pay respects to a fellow motorman.

You and John can exchange motor stories up in Heaven. Remember to watch over the uniforms still on duty here. Keep them safe and send love to your families so the hurt can ease by remembering you and then smiling.

LASD: You have a special place in my heart and you must keep Deputy Bain in your hearts so his death is not in vain. Keep his family in your hearts, thoughts and prayers.

Bless you and yours.

Love and hugs to ease your grief,

To our dear friend Diana, we love you and pray for you and the girls at this time of darkness. I will miss Pierre's love of life, him calming me down at dog shows, and for leaving a lasting impression on our son Kenneth, who wants to grow up to be a cop just like Deputy Pierre Bain. You are a true HERO. Rest in Peace, and you know we will take care of Diana. The Grady Family

Pierre and I worked together at Temple Station and I consider him a very special friend of mine. He was beyond charming and funny.

We spent many hours laughing and joking while working the desk, making the best of what can be a crazy work environment. While calling friends/coworkers the night of his death to inform of his untimely passing, I was reminded by one dispatcher of how he used to take any food and make a meal out of it. While some of us claim to not be picky, he truly wasn't. He was known for making a snack out of bologna on bread with carrot sticks or a tortilla with Lord- only-knows what inside...he even used to bring in huge, hardboiled duck eggs and eat them. Imagine the craziest combo and that would be what he would eat! We all gave him such a tough time about it and he would just look at us as if to say, "What? What is so strange about this?", which would make us laugh even more. It wasn't necessarily about quality meals, but more about making sure his belly wasn't growling. He truly got his joy from other things...

His zest for life, even under bad conditions, was simply amazing. He wasn't working the desk because he wanted to, but he made the best of it! Pierre worked extra hard to learn how to do things right and help me (or any of the dispatchers) with radio traffic or whatever, when we were swamped. We spent many hours talking about and showing off pictures of his beautiful daughters (he truly was a proud dad!!!), his home the hills where he had to have water trucked in, or his parents who lived up Hwy 395. Every time I would pass by their small town, I would think of him and his stories. Once he met his wife, Diana, you could see a new glow about him. Imagine what happy looks like, and then what happiest is. He found that place with Diana.

Pierre liked to share stories about taking his girls fishing and his face would light up when he would "brag" about how one of them caught the biggest fish. It was almost as if he had caught the fish himself, but one could tell that he didn't want the glory. He was proud that he did such a good job teaching them.

One of the last few e-mails I got from him was about our ever-pending camping trip to the Eastern Sierras. We were constantly trying to figure out how we could get a group of us up there to camp and fish. He had a bunch of great fishing spots (I still have the hand drawn maps he gave me). We were supposed to make it happen so we could exchange our secret spots and all of us could hang out. It was going to be a big, fun trip. I feel guilty that we didn't do it last year like we talked about...

We have truly lost one of the best deputies I have ever known in my 18 years on the department. The only relief I feel is knowing he died while doing things he loved...being a deputy and riding a motorcycle. I just wish it hadn't been so soon!

I pray that his friends and family can eventually find peace and enjoy the many memories he leaves with all who knew him!

With a burdened heart this week I sympathize with family, friends, and co-workers of Deputy Bain. With emotions and feelings over flowing in times like this, it is impossible to put into words how we feel. Losing our own is never easy to deal with, however, we must take comfort in knowing that our fallen brother would want all of us to keep on moving forward and take up his fight move forward toward victory. To Deputy Bain's family I say, Pierre will be near you everytime you think of him. His physical presence may have left, but hold onto and keep his memory and love alive in your heart. Pierre has made his mark here on earth but more important he has made his mark in numerous people's lives. To Deputy Bain's co-workers, keep on fighting the fight, that's what Deputy Bain would want all of us law enforcement officers to do. God bless Deputy Pierre Bain's sacrifice for family, community, state, and country.

I remember Pierre from the collie national last year. He kept showing up at the agility ring, obviously enjoying seeing the dogs run the courses. He was a happy, smiling, helpful and friendly soul and I enjoyed spending time with him. I know he started training one of their dogs and I believe was entered in agility at the collie national this year. I was looking forward to next week in Boise because I knew Pierre and Diana were going to be camping, as I am, and I knew we'd have a good time. The collie community will miss Pierre. Take care, Diana.
