This message is to all my fallen brothers/sisters who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the City of Tampa. On Febuary 9th, 2011 we broke ground on an enhancement to the Tampa Police Monument. This project was done to provide the most honorable place to remember your service.

Some of the names on that monument had fallen before my time, however we all wore the same uniform and were family. This enhancement will remind your loved ones that we will never forget all of you nor the sacrifices you made. I am proud to be part of this and hope that you will be smiling down at the finished product. God bless you all and your families. RIP..your sacrifices are remembered daily through those who continue to serve.

As a reflection, I can only think of how my mom and dad make me feel whenever there was a flag that I would not be the person that could just slow pace. Actually, my dad last written words to me were "is not how fast you get to the finish line but after the run how long you keep up the pace". I undestand now, and now I live by those words. We all have a responsibility to live by those words in our own ways. I encourage all, to believe in the fact that we are what we do and we do what we mean. Thanks to all that loved Juan and still love him. I am sorry for not being able to write down words and finish them these past two years. People like Juan should not be just forgotten but remebered as examples on how you can turn out your destiny and be watT YOU LOVED.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Det. Serrano

You were in my thoughts recently as I was reflecting about the recent loss of a previous co-worker and friend. I have never had the privledge of meeting you, but your reputation speaks volumes. Most say, that working under your command would of been an honor as well as a learning experience in any new officer's career. I wish I could had that oppurtunity.

To your family, please know that the Officers of this great agency will never forget Det. Juan Serrano. I'm confident he is looking down on all of you from above. In the next few weeks to come, Det. Serrano's name will be added to the national wall in Washington, a true honor to Our Hero. God Bless.
