Today,I was doing a google search of your name and this is what I came upon. My heart was broken, my prayers went to your wife and kids. It seems like yesterday you drove me to the airport in Germany to see me on my way home. Your were always a great friend, always there to listen and the first to help. I know you are heaven. Again my prayers go to your wife, kids and family. Your truly will always be the greatest..

I was profoundly devastated today to find out that such a wonderful human being was so suddenly and tragically taken away from us. I met John so many years ago in California when we were stationed together with the 247th Med at Ft. Irwin. I remember Teresa first as a girl friend and then a loving wife who always understood the rigors of military life. It was such an easy transformation for him to leave the brotherhood of the active military and join the family of the police force. His unwavering tenacity and dedication served him well in anything that he did.
I will always remember you John a hundred feet up on the side of a rock or leaning out of a Blackhawk, always happy and full of excitement. You, Teresa and your wonderful children have always and will always be in my thoughts and prayers.
To all that read these reflections never forget that we lost a loving and devoted husband, a wonderful father and a true friend that would always make you feel loved. I weep for you today and I will miss you dearly until the end of my days.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Greg,

I am extremely saddened to hear that you have passed on. I found out about this about 30 minutes ago. I am at a loss for words. You were a great and true friend that i will always remember. I was thinking earlier today and speaking with my father about castles i saw in Germany and thought of you only to find this out later. I have 5 extremely great memories of you my friend. The 1st memory is of us at Ft. Eustis in your room and putting dippidy doo in our hair and taking pictures. The 2nd memory was of you, Jones, and myself dropping King off in D.C. then going to the university of Maryland to find out everyone had left for spring break. We went to Jones parents house that night. The next night we went to Fredrick to your parents house. Your parents were so kind to me even though i had trouble getting pepper out of that thing lol. We all had a good laugh at my experience. My 3rd memory is when we were in Fulda and you werent able to go to Spain and allowed me to buy your tickets and go in your place. The 4th memory is when you, Wingo, Golden, and I went to Heidleberg. You had a recorder and we went to a castle then found another castle that was in ruins that we climbed up to see. The final memory my friend was again when in Fulda. Thanksgiving 1988 when i had no family in Germany but you did. We went to your uncle Bruces house. I still have the pictures you took of his family and myself. I have since forgotten your aunts name for which I am sorry. Words cant explain how warm you and your family made me feel. You didnt have to invite me to any of these events but you did. You always treated me with kindness, honesty, and respect. May God bless your family, wife, children, and all your friends. The world lost a beautiful person in your passing. May God have a place in his kingdom for you my friend.

John -
We are about a week away from traveling to DC to honor the sacrifice you made for all of us! Your legacy lives on and we think about you every day. The strength that we gain from Teresa has been a huge factor in our ability to deal with your absence. We’re very fortunate to have her and the kids involved in our lives. I know it will be painful to see your name on the wall for the first time. We will be looking to you for strength as we participate in the candlelight vigil and the memorial ceremony. Keep an eye on us and we’ll continue to keep an eye on the family!

A true American HERO, in every sense. God bless you brother, and take comfort in the fact that you were always greatly loved by many, and will never be forgotten.
my deepest condolences to your family.
You walked the path that so few of us walk. Only to have your wonderful life cut short by a selfish bum.

Rest easy brother, my prayers are with you and yours, and the CHP.

John, you might be gone, but your damn sure not forgotten. I was watching the California 500 on TV the other day, and quietly shed a tear thinking how you had worked it last year before you left us all. I love you and miss you- you were the best friend I ever had. I know that you look down on Teresa the kids, and I know some day we'll meet again. Please forgive me for not having a chance to say goodbye- I live with that guilt every day, friend. I've been to your dusty, sad spot, and left my old crew wings and some Coors Light- I figured you'd smack me (when we meet again), if I left you flowers! Godspeed, my friend, and know that your legacy lives stronger than ever. Noel... [email protected]

Well love it's been a year now. I still feel like it was just yesterday that you were taken from us. The kids and I talk about you every day. We miss you more than words can say. I know that you are watching over and protecting us. We had a beautiful candlelight vigil at the CHP office to mark the anniverasry of your death. Shortie took me out to where you were hit. Less than a mile to the exit to come home to us. I'm so glad that you didn't die on the shoulder of that highway. You fought and held on until they put you in the helicopter. You always loved flying in your blackhawk helicopters in the Army. I know you were at peace. Always and Forever, Teresa

It's only been a year since you left and I know you are
missed greatly by all who knew and loved you. What an outstanding individual you were and we need more people like you. You left huge shoes to fill and we are
immensely proud of the wonderful choices you made
for your life. I feel so badly for your children who only
have you as a role model in their memories. May Jesus fill in the gaps.

What a loss this world has suffered by this... Your death has obviously touched so many lives. I pray that the wife and children will find some amount of peace knowing that you are such a hero! As an officer I know the fear of someone else having to tell my children they will never see me again, or hear my voice. But, I am also engaged to a police officer, and cannot imagine being on the other end of that information. I embrace your family with prayer, and loving thoughts... so that they can feel if even a moment of comfort.

May God be with you... Keep his memory alive!!

WIth love and support...
