I am so sorry that this tragedy had to happen. My thoughts, prayers and condolences go out to you, Capt. Sell, to your family members, friends, and of course, fellow police officers. You will never be forgotten. This senseless act never should have happened. I see the local news coverage up here in Rhode Island and it sickens me that the person responsible for your death, his friends, actually defend him and stick up for him. What is wrong with the world today when people actually think it is alright to shot and kill a police officer? A human being first, police officer second? A human being who just took an oath to serve and protect citizens of his/her community. Not too many people appreciate what we as police officers deal with and go through on a daily basis. You, unfortunately, had to make the ultimate sacrifice, but you, Capt. Sell, will always be in your fellow brother’s and sister’s hearts forever. Rest in peace my brother. God bless your family during this difficult time.

THE POLICEMAN’S LAST ROLL CALL ...

THE POLICEMAN STOOD AND FACED HIS GOD, WHICH MUST ALWAYS COME TO PASS. HE HOPED HIS SHOES WERE SHINING, JUST AS BRIGHTLY AS HIS BRASS. "STEP FORWARD NOW, POLICEMAN. HOW SHALL I DEAL WITH YOU? HAVE YOU ALWAYS TURNED THE OTHER CHEEK? TO MY CHURCH HAVE YOU BEEN TRUE?"

THE POLICEMAN SQUARED his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain’t. Because those of us who carry badges can’t always be a Saint. I’ve had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough, and sometimes I’ve been violent because the streets are awfully tough. But I never took a penny that wasn’t mine to keep, though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills just got to steep. And I never passed a cry for help, though times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I’ve wept many unmanly tears. I know I don’t deserve a place among the people here, they never wanted me around except to calm their fear. If you’ve a place for me Lord, it needn’t be so grand. I never expected or had too much, but if you don’t, I’ll understand."

There was silence all around the throne where the Saints had often trod. As the policeman waited quietly, for the judgement of his God. "Step forward now, policeman, you’ve borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on Heaven’s streets, you’ve done your time in hell."

Rest in peace brother, and God bless your family.

I began my employment with the Blytheville Police Department in 1988 as a Dispatcher with the Department. Capt. Sell was a Captain over Corrections at that time. I grew to know him and love him as a person starting then. When I was transfered to Criminal Investigations Division and became a Detective Captain Sell's wife was the owner of Smiley's Award Center and Captain Sell made the desk plaque with my name and rank that sits on my desk today and gave it to me as a congradulations gift. On one other occasion he was exiting his police unit and saw a plastic small female police officer on the ground. He took that and made a small trophy, mounted that plastic female officer on the top and gave it to me with the inscription of "Bad Ass Bumpas" on it. I have always treasured those two things from a friend and they are still in my office to this day. "Rest in peace my friend, see you on the other side"

Please know that our department mourns this loss along with you. It is so tragic when things of this nature happen. There are no answers but so many questions. Hopefully, our dept will be able to show our respect by joining the other hundreds of Law Enforcements officers that will be represented at the funeral service.

HE PUT ON THE BLUE,
LATE ONE COLD WINTER NIGHT,
HIS BADGE UPON HIS CHEST,
POLISHED SO BRIGHT.
THOUGH HIS BADGE WAS OLD,
IT SHINED LIKE NEW,
FOR IT WAS MUCH LOVED,
BY THIS MAN IN BLUE.
HIS BADGE WAS HIS PROMISE,
TO ALL WHO CAME HIS WAY,
IM HERE TO SERVE YOU,
IT SEEMED TO SAY.
A SILVER STAR,
WITH EDGES STRAIGHT AND TRUE,
JUST LIKE THE HEART,
OF THIS MAN IN BLUE.
HE DIDNT SEE THE GUN,
THAT TOOK HIS LIFE,
HE SLIPPED AWAY,
CRYING OUT FOR HIS WIFE.
HIS BROKEN BADGE,
CLUNG BRAVELY TO HIS CHEST,
A SHATTERED WITNESS,
TO HIS LAST BREATH.
HIS BADGE,
ONCE SHINY, BRIGHT, AND NEW,
NOW LIES BROKEN,
BENT, AND BLUE.
A SILVER STAR,
NOW BROKEN IN TWO,
JUST LIKE THE HEARTS,
OF HIS BROTHERS IN BLUE.

The first emotion that hits me when I look at this incident is anger.....It is absolutely amazing what the enemy will do to us to avoid a minor smack on the rest...This perp was wanted for an assault 2 which was a serious offense, but now he commits a double homicide to avoid an assault 2 charge....I dont understand these souls. This incident further shows us that we must, as officers, always remain alert and even then, we still aren't really safe...Jim Sell payed the ultimate price simply for an attempt to make our streets safe by addressing a traffic violation and had no idea about the perps prior ruthless behavior. This man is nothing less than an angel. He gave his life at an age where he could have been retired,to keep others he never knew safe from harm. This fact must be acknowledged and not forgotten most importantly...I never met you my brother, but I will keep you in my heart....I am so pissed off at this incident, but even in my anger, I know you are with the real Officer of the entire world.....So rest my brother...Its your time now....Rest in peace.
