Reflections for Officer Jeffery Alan Wroten

Jeff miss you so much! <3
Jeff was my sensei for about 7 years in WV for his beloved Arnis (martial art), he guided us all, all his students, with care and devotion and a passion for Arnis… we even traveled with Jeff to Michigan State for multiple trainings with Remy Presas the founder of Arnis and they were amazing times.
Jeff took me from white belt almost to my black before he moved to Florida… miss you so much sensei! And friend!! Eric Davis and all of us miss you every day!! Thank you for your service and peace and light on your family always.

Jennifer Bell (Ramsey then)
Student of Jeff’s - now DHHR, WV

Happy birthday Daddy I miss you. So much has happened and I wish I could talk to you and the more things that happen makes every year more painful. You’ve got two beautiful grandsons that Mimi is doing so wonderful with and I got married. He’s a wonderful man, you’d love him I just know it. I just want to hug you one more time and here your voice telling me you’re here. I love you. I think of you every day and I wear my necklace every day to keep you close. I miss you I wish we could see you again.

It will soon be 15 years since your watch ended and I still remember that day as if it were yesterday. Walking into the prison and hearing that one of our own has been shot by an inmate at the hospital was so surreal. The fear and anger that flowed through every officer that day was almost uncontrollable. Even the inmates were quiet that day like they were afraid that one little sound would set us off. I was in the last gang related class that you taught for the academy and your memory was so fresh in my mind. You were funny, intelligent, kind, and informative while filling us with information that could save each and every one of us. Then, not even a month later, you were gone. Your memory will always stay in my mind and heart. Rest In Peace, brother.

Jeff was my instructor at the West Virginia Corrections Academy and you couldn't find a better man. I was saddened when I heard about this right after it happened - I was actually in shock because I knew of no one better at self defense than he was. RIP my friend and teacher.

I worked with Jeff at Mount Olive Correctional Complex in West Virginia. He was willing to help anybody with anything and willing to explain why we do the things we do. When he went to become an instructor at our Corrections Academy we at MOCC lost a diligent Correctional Officer but the West Virginia Division of Corrections became stronger due to his diligence in training. Jeff, my friend you are still missed.

Although I never met Officer Wroten his untimely death reminds me how precious life is everyday. Today my son celebrates his 10th birthday. He was born at WCH the day Officer Wroten was shot there. As quickly as life starts it can stop. My husband would tell me how he would leave our room of happiness and walk out seeing the family crying in pain and it would break his heart. Not a birthday goes by I do not say a prayer for this man and his family. Bless you all and RIP Jeff Wroten.

He's watching over you always so live your life to the fullest and honor your father by being the amazing person I know that you are. Your dad is a true hero, because of his sacrifice no one else at the hospital was hurt.
