Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Officer Richard Allen May, Jr.

Ofc May,

Your service and sacrifice will never be forgotten. Although we never met, I feel I know the type of officer/father/husband you were based on the readings of these reflections, and after meeting your wife and daughter (Lauren - I hope I got that right) at COPS camp last week. You sound like a "cops cop", one I would be honored to work side by side with.
I talked briefly with your daughter at COPS camp while she was helping make a t-shirt for my son. She is definately special and I am sure you are very proud of her. She told me the trial is coming up very soon for the scum that took you from them. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

I didn't personally know you. I didn't even hear about it for a year and a few months. My officer was killed seven days before you. I want to thank you and tell you you aren't forgotten

Forgive me for missing the anniversary of your E.O.W., but I felt as though I could not continue to read about so many tragedies. I now realize the visit each day to leave a word of encouragement and hope to the loved ones of others, helps me to remember that I am not alone with my pain and heartbreak. So may I say to your friends and loved ones that my thoughts and prayers are with them now and always. Continue to keep watch over them and those still out on patrol and may they know you will never be forgotten.

I don't want you to think I've stopped thinking about you ;) It hard to believe three years have gone by. I'll be doing something or driving somewhere and I'll think about something funny you said, but every now and then I'll just get an empty feeling and tears will well up in my eyes. You will always be an important influence in my life.

On the 3rd anniversary of Officer May's death, we honored his service in our patrol briefing by reading his entry from ODMP and remembering the tragic events from that day. Each day, we honor one fallen officer on the anniversary of their death so as to keep them in our thoughts, and also to remind us of the dangers inherent in our job. Officer May is not forgotten.

Officer May,

Its been 3 years since you left us. You are in my heart and thoughts everyday. Since you left us, I left the Police Department and I am now a UCLA student. I still remember my first day as an explorer and you were the only officer willing to take me. Our first call together was a stabbing where I had no clue what to do. And the last time I saw you was in front of the Police Station, where you made fun of me and my reading abilities :) Well I have moved on from Exploring, but you will always be one of the most influential persons in my life. Your motivation and achievements have motivated me to pursue my personal endeavors. I will always remember you and our times together. God Bless!!
