Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Officer Richard Allen May, Jr.

As we in Philadelphia deal with the loss of a great Officer in a similar manner, I can only say that I understand the amount of grief that your family and friends must be going through.

I am sorry for your loss and my thoughts and prayers are with you.

St. Michael's Prayer for Police Officers

Saint Michael, heaven's glorious commissioner of police, who once so neatly and successfully cleared God's premises of all its undesirables, look with kindly and professional eyes on your earthly force.

Give us cool heads, stout hearts, and uncanny flair for investigation and wise judgment.

Make us the terror of burglars, the friend of children and law-abiding citizens, kind to strangers, polite to bores, strict with law-breakers and impervious to temptations.

You know, Saint Michael, from your own experiences with the devil, that the police officer's lot on earth is not always a happy one; but your sense of duty that so pleased God, your hard knocks that so surprised the devil, and your angelic self-control give us inspiration.

And when we lay down our night sticks, enroll us in your heavenly force, where we will be as proud to guard the throne of God as we have been to guard the city of all the people.

Amen.

May God bless Officer May and his family.

I read all these pages with great sadness in my heart and can only admire the bravory and professionalism of serving Police Officers worldwide.

Officer May touched me especially as he is a Brother US Marine and here I write for every name mentioned of officers down.

God Bless you all, your loss will not be forgotten by me, and thankyou everyone for doing your jobs unselfishly.

I met Officer May in November 2005, as he responded to our East Palo Alto condo to take a report on vandalism that occured while we were out of town. He was by the far the kindest peace officer I have ever encountered. He took the time to explain why crime in EPA was so rampant, and that the PD was extremely short staffed. When he learned that we were selling our condo in EPA to escape the escalating violence, he said that it was sad that we had to take those measures to feel safe, but he understood completely. On the day of his death, I saw helicopters above EPA and knew something bad had happened. When I turned on the news and heard that an officer had been killed, somehow I instinctively knew it was Officer May. When I learned that it was in fact Officer May that had died, I knew that leaving East Palo Alto was the right thing to do. I thank Officer May for all he did to try and help that crime ravaged town, and hope that the man guilty of killing Officer May knows of no peace for the rest of his days.
