Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Ethan G. Collins

Even though my husband and I met him only once...we are grateful to have met Ethan. He made a deep impression on us. We were impressed by his willingness to go out of his way to help others. My heart aches to think of the pain his family is going through at this time. We keep them and his co-workers in our prayers. Thank You Ethan for your Service to Fairfield County, Ohio.

Be not afraid Ethan, there are so many of your brothers and sisters that have gone before you to make your arrival in heaven like a reunion. As for your family here, Linda Pope, COPS, and the largest family of supporters in the world, will help them through the hard times. Salute your fellow officers and hug them upon arrival, and please let them know that we will not forget their sacrifice. We will all meet again someday.

Rest in peace, you fought for it daily and now have found the greatest peace, in HEAVEN. Watch over your family as we all climb the stairs to be with you.

To your family, this is just one valley in the hardest journey they will see. Remember that the all valleys lead to mountains, the mountains will plateau, and that place is HEAVEN. Many valleys and mountains will come, just do not give up until you reach the plateau, Ethan will be there, cheering you on.

My heart goes out to your family,

Eric Howell, (stepfather of Officer Kelli Lambert)

"In the simple performance of duty,
he pinned on a badge,
checked his gear with a practiced eye,
and kissed his loved ones good-bye.
In the simple performance of duty,
he reported for work,
joked with his buddies at roll call,
and made his last trip down the squad room hall.
In the simple performance of duty,
he answered the call
to help the helpless, to find the lost,
no matter the danger or how great the cost.
In the simple performance of duty,
he lay down his life,
for those in peril he tried to save,
our brave friend went to his grave.
In the simple performance of duty,
we honor his deed,
as we carry him to rest in a flag-draped casket,
long after the world has forgotten, we shall never forget.
Never judge or regret, what he did, In the simple performance of duty."

To the family and friends of Deputy Ethan Collins and to his fellow officers of the Fairfield County Sheriff's Office:

I was so saddened to learn of the tragic death of this young dedicated officer. On behalf of our entire family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you sustained when Deputy Collins was tragically killed in the line of duty while coming to the aid of another officer.

May you be comforted and supported by the warm embrace of your law enforcement family, and by other police survivors who share your painful journey.

My heart goes out to this young family. In reading the reflections abouth Ethan, it is obvious that he profoundly touched the lives of many people and that he was an amazing husband, father, family member, friend and peer. That is a wonderful legacy to leave to all those who cared for him.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the service Sheriff Collins gave to his community and the citizens of Ohio, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on January 4, 2006.

To Kylie and all the Collins family, godspeed in your healing from this most tragic loss. I have moved on from my role in the Ohio COPS organization, but those that are there to continue the great work of helping survivors is strong and ever ready to help you as you begin this horrific journey of grief. All I can say is let them help you find the way. They have all been through what you are going through now. It has been the greatest priviledge of my life to assist them, and watch them grow into the most loving, caring and supporting network of peers. When they hold out their hand to you, grab ahold and let them help pick you up. There is nothing they won't do for you during this time...and for ever. You will hear many cliches during your journey, but only those who have experienced what you are now can truly understand how you are feeling. Lean on them, I promise they will lessen the burden. There is someone in this amazing organization for each and every one of you. They are only a phone call away....
I will look forward to meeting you in DC. I know that sounds weird, for none of us wish they knew any other in this group, but it is our fate in life. I hope you will find the strength to heal with the help of your new "family". I will pray for you and I wish you peace and godspeed in your healing. Linda Pope-Baker

To my friend Ethan,

I could not see you before you passed away - but I hold memories of you dear in my heart. The days I worked with you at Big Bear will be in my heart forever. I will always remember your gentle smile, your kind and friendly words, and the fact that you treated everyone equally. You stood out from the rest and that's why you were and always will be the best. Not only did you wear the uniform well, but you gave your all to your job, I know you did. I will miss you greatly and am very sad I did not get to say goodbye. However, I know one day if I am in an accident, you will be the angel watching over me.
