Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Robert Nguyen

Rob has a constant presence in our minds and hearts-always. Going into this month always makes it more difficult, but, it brings the guys in the unit that much closer as a result (always something positive when thinking of Rob). Happy Holidays to the Nguyen family.

The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Rob,

It is almost two years since you left us and still it feels like yesterday. I don't think a day has gone by that I haven't thought of you. Throughout the years we joked and laughed, played ball or just hung out. It didn't hit me until you passed that you were so much more than just a friend to me and everyone else. You were a shining example of how to be a real man and carry yourself with honor, dignity, and respect. A lot has changed in my life since your death. I make sure I remind those close to me how much I love and and care for them because, like you, in the twinkiling of an eye...

I miss you. You are always in my heart and will never be forgotten. I love you, my brother. Till we meet again.

I can still remember it like it was yesterday. Every time I ride over the bridge the two hairs left on my neck stand up. Moreover I can still remember walking into the garage to take my wheel out...and you bustin my chops. I still wear my mourning band over my badge to this day and people ask why. I think about you a lot, but I think it's finally time to take it off, Rob. I just tattoo'd my arm into a memorial...and you'll be with me til the end for good. Everyone needs a guardian angel...just keeping looking me out. 27-01, Power, Pride, Determination

Rob, Visiting your garden and the Bridge site was extremely difficult the anniversary this past Christmas night. I can't believe it's been a year. It seems like we lost you just yesterday. Looking at your mom I see you and your dimples. I miss you. Send me a warm smile. I'll always remember you and will stop be from time to time to say hello. May God bless your family. Take care Rob. Abrazos para ti.
