December 22, 2005

My phone rang this morning with a friend's voice on the other end saying, "Laura, I have some bad news and I am calling for your permission on something." My stomach sank immediately.

My friend went on to tell me that a CHP officer from my town had died last night, in the same manner that my husband died, and that he was on his way over to the family's house to offer his services during this very difficult time.

You see, Ronina, Toran, and Teagan, it was just last year that my girls ( ages 3 and 5 last year) and I found ourselves walking the very same road you have just started traveling. My husband, Deputy Dan Archuleta, died in the line of duty while working for the Kern County Sheriff Department. We know much of what you are going through and if the three of you need anything at all, we are just around the corner.

As I am writing this my six year old daughter asked what I was doing and I told her about your family's death. Her first response was, "Mom, I bet he and Daddy are playing together in heaven!! I bet they're buddies" She asked if we could pray for your family and we joined hands and prayed for you all.

Everything will seem so incredibly crazy for a while but know that if you need to talk to someone that has gone through this, if you need to just scream or cry or hear words of encouragement, even someone to intercede in prayer for you, I am and will always be available to you, day or night. You can reach me through the Kern Sheriff Department or through the COPS Organization if you lose my contact information that is being given to you today by my friend.

Let me leave you with a story of encouragement that I experienced with my six year old. Several months ago my daughter was strattling a half wall between the front door and the hallway. She was laying on her tummy and I walked up to her and told her to hold on as hard as she could to that wall. She looked at me with a puzzled look and I walked up to her and gave her a big shove, trying to knock her off balance. She was thrown off balance but didn't fall off the three foot wall. She bunched up her eyebrows and raised her voice, "Mom! What are you doing!!??" and I told her to hold on even tighter and I tried to knock her off balance again. This time she got all bothered at me, "STOP!!!" I paused and explained this to her. I told her that in life, God is like that very wall she was hanging on to. I told her that no matter how hard a situation may seem that God is bigger than that and that if we hold on to him as hard as we can he will carry us through any situation. Then, I asked her what lesson she just learned from the wall. She explained it beautifully and then with a huge grin on her face she layed back down on the wall, tucked in her heals like she was riding a horse, grabbed the left and right sides of the wall with her open hands, and said, "Go ahead Mom, do it again! I'm holding on to God with all my might." with sweet tears whelling up in my eyes I gave her the strongest push of all-and she didn't fall.

You are in our prayers and we are here for you when you if you need us.
