December 11, 2005

My fiancé, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in SE Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Hank did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Hank be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Nava's family, friends, and co-workers are going through in losing him. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of loss until they've walked in our shoes. Please know that my thoughts are with you and that you are not alone in your "journey". Should you ever need anything please do not hesitate to contact me. (The Davis County Sheriff's Office will always know how to reach me or write jocelyne1974 at canada dot com)

As a fallen officer "survivor" and a friend, please accept my condolences on behalf of myself and the McElderry family. I never got the opportunity to know Hank but, I am certain he was well respected and well loved. Hank will live on in the hearts of all the lives he touched. You were all blessed to have been able to know and love Hank, even for a short time. I pray that Hank, Dennis, and all the other fallen officers will continue to watch over us all as only they can.

Thank you Officer Nava for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiancé Dennis for me.

Wishing you and all those who's lives you touched brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

Will the bagpipers play on my funeral day? Will a sea of blue stretch down this long road? As Harleys rumble by and choppers thunder overhead, it is the sweet sounds of the bagpipers that I hear instead.

All have come here to pay their respects. To listen to the story of the brave act I did. Worry not for me because I'll be all right. It is my wife who needs comfort through these long and lonely nights. Who will teach my boy what is to be a man? Who will be there to hold my little girl's hand? It is my family that needs you now, for I am at rest. Let it be known that I worked with the best.

I did not live the longest of lives, nor one of great wealth. It is the sacrifice I made that put me high upon this shelf. Treated as a pauper in life but as a king in death, all I did was my job like so many had before.
So when you go to drink to comfort your way, remember what it is that I have to say.

When you raise your glass in memory of my name, know you are my brother for you would have done the same. It is only we who run toward what others run from. Now I run no more, for my work is done.

As this wooden vessel carries my body through this sea of blue, listen for the bagpipers and hear what they play.
For it is their sweet music that carries my soul today. - UNK

Rest in Peace brother and watch over us as we continue on and put the badge on each and everyday.

I never knew this memorial existed till we buried one of our own today. I understand the pain of your family and The Fort Worth Police Dept. It's so hard to lose one of your own. You may be 10-42 here but you are 10-41 up above watching over all. My deepest sympathies to your family and your dept. God be with you all

Like it was said at your service, the smile and attitude made anyone that met you feel comfortable both young and old. I appreciate that the time I knew you I felt that way. The time I spent with your family was short but I remember like it was yesterday when "Bruno" ate the couch because I left him in the house. My heart goes out to your family in this trying time and I hope that in time they understand you may be 10-7, but you'll always be there in their hearts. Peace to a great policeman, husband, father, and above all a great human being. God bless you Hank.

The word HERO is often overused. We often hear it used for movie stars, and pro athletes. But in this case the word HERO is not strong enough . . .
Hank came to work everyday to serve and protect. He had no desire to be recognized for doing his job. He did it because he loved it. He did it because some are called to serve.
Hank answered that call and lost his life. Hank you are trully a HERO. You are loved and will be missed my friend.

To the Nava family,

I am soory for your loss. Another brother in "Blue" has been taken from us and my prayers are with your family. Justice will be done to the person responsible and he will have to face GOD for his actions. It breaks my heart to hear about a fellow Officer that has fallen. I am currently mourning a friend Officer that has fallen in Brazoria County. They will never be forgotten. May Officer Nava Jr rest in peace on behalf of the Manvel Police Department.
