I was just told of this story by a co-worker who is also a Jett. I am going to have to look up some more details to find a relation. He was born in Oliver Springs, TN...where my family has lived all their lives.

I never met James Jett, he was my Great Grandfather. Like my brother Wally, I was told the stories of my Great Grandfather's death. I am proud to claim him as part of my family. He set an example for all to follow.

I am the great grandson of James Jett, Walter Reed. My grand mother, Jenny Jett, was the oldest of the Jett children. She told my sisters and brothers and me about the shooting. She said that she was told at school that the moonshiners kids that they were going to kill her father if he tried to bust their still. I have a black and white picture of great grandpa's pistol and handcuffs, they have little dings on them where bullets hit them during the ambush.

There is no question the moonshiners were cowards, who waited for an opportune moment, during which great grandpa would have no chance to defend himself.

Jenny Jett worked at the hosiery mill and gave her earnings to her mother to help support the family after her father died. Great grandma was apparently an excellent shot with a pistol, and according to my father, he would stop his car a hundred feet from her home, honk the horn and yell. "Grandma! It's J.B., don't shoot!" when he went to visit her.

The Jett family is a very real part of America, with very colorful people in it. While my father's name was Reed, I am very proud to have Jett blood in my veins!

James Jett was my great grand-father. My grandma, Jenny Jett, was the oldest of his children. She used to tell me the story of his murder when I was a child. She also told about what a great shot my great grand mother was and how, as a widow, she protected her family.

My father, Col. James B. Reed, used to tell me how he would stop his car in when going to see his grandmother, blow the horn about a hundred feet from her house and yell, "Grandma, it's J.B.- don't shoot!" You wanted to give the widow Jett plenty of notice when visiting her.

Constable James A. Jett was my grandfather. I never met him as he was killed 11 years before I was born to his daughter Edith Jett Wright. He had four living sons, Edward, Clarence, Joe, Woodrow and Fred (who was a baby). Mama met one of the assailants on the bridge going into Harriman, TN. She had known him all her life but that day he did not speak to her. He had just killed her dad. It took 18 months to arrest Walter Newport at his mother's home. Agents were going to burn down the house as they had him under surveillance. His mother started screaming and he came out. Oscar Clark who was the main shooter was killed in a bar in Harriman in the late 40's. He was shot six times same as he had shot Grandpa Jett. Grandpa Jett taught them music and they all liked to sing. He played the organ and was a good Christian man.

My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Constable Jett was my great grandfather. I have heard accounts of his death and the terrible wounds he sustained from the gunshot. My grandmother had vivid memories of seeing his body being carried home and how badly he had been injured. We still have his picture and remember him.
