My fiancé, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in SE Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Daniel did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Daniel be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Special Agent Madrid's family, friends, and co-workers are going through in losing him. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. Please know that my thoughts are with you and that you are not alone in your "journey". Should you ever need anything please do not hesitate to contact me. (The Davis County Sheriff's Office and COPS will also always know how to reach me.)

As a fallen officer "survivor" and a friend, please accept my condolences on behalf of myself and the McElderry family. I never got the opportunity to know Daniel but, I am certain he was well respected and well loved. Daniel will live on in the hearts of all the lives he touched. You were all blessed to have been able to know and love Daniel, even for a short time. I pray that Daniel and Dennis will continue to watch over us along with all the other fallen officers all as only they can.

Thank you Special Agent Madrid for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiancé Dennis for me.

Wishing you and all those who loved you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

Dan, I pray to you in Heaven each day. May you find peace and look down upon your family & friends.

Madrid Family,

Dan was a dedicated man who loved his career. He inspired me to pursue my career with NPS. We worked together in 2003 at Ozark National Scenic Riverways. Dan told me courageous stories. He is an example of an amazing, wise, accomplished man. He will be greatly missed by many and never forgotten.

I pray for all of you each day, and pray for your strength now and in the days ahead.

Sending you thoughts of peace during your time of sorrow,

I did not know the man who saved people's lives and their properties.
I did not know the man who protected our forests and our land.
I did not know the man who was this great American.

I knew the man that his son spoke of so proudly.
I knew the man that loved our daughter as his own.
I knew the man who took our little grandson and made him his grandson.

And, on that last day, before he left for what would be his last assignment, all of us there witnessed how very much in love he was with his wife.

My heart simply aches for Rebecca. In time, may God help her to understand that we only get our soul mates for a little while.

***God gets them for an eternity.***

National Park Service Special Agent Daniel Paul Madrid died Saturday while investigating a previous visitor fatality. Madrid was hiking to the scene of the visitor fatality when he collapsed on the Mist Trail (below Vernal Fall) in Yosemite National Park. Resuscitation efforts by fellow park rangers and a passing doctor were unsuccessful.

Madrid was duty stationed in the Midwest Region of the National Park Service at Ozark National Scenic Riverways in Missouri. He was on a temporary detail to the Pacific West Region on the National Park Service at Yosemite National Park, while other Special Agents and Park Rangers were assigned to hurricane response efforts along the Gulf Coast.

Madrid was one of 48 National Park Service Special Agents, and the first National Park Service Special Agent to die in the line of duty.

Madrid was 51 years old and is survived by his wife, Rebecca, and two adult children, son Chris, and daughter Heather.

Daniel Paul Madrid was born March 14, 1954, in Globe, Arizona. After graduating from Miami High School in Miami, Arizona, in 1972, he attended Mesa Community College (Mesa, AZ) and Gila Pueblo College (Globe, AZ).

Dan started his federal government career in June, 1973 as a seasonal Forestry Aid with the United States Forest Service (USFS) in Arizona. From November, 1977 until February, 1985 he worked seasonally and accepted more responsibilities each year. During this time he was temporarily assigned to a Young Adult Conservation Corps (YACC) crew to supervise 6 to 8 young adults on forest resources, performed law enforcement duties, was the district fire engine supervisor, and acted as the District Fire Management Officer on occasion. In February, 1985 he became a full time Fire Fighter/Engineer/Medic with the City of Globe, Arizona, and was a commissioned reserve police office with the City of Globe, Arizona, at the same time for a year.

In June, 1987 Dan began his career with the National Park Service, accepting a position as Park Ranger / Law Enforcement at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. While at Lake Mead he coordinated technical rescues in the Katherine District, and remained active as a firefighter with certifications such as strike team leader, line locator, division group supervisor, and crew representative.

Dan accepted a promotion to Supervisory Park Ranger / Law Enforcement at Everglades National Park in October, 1988 working as the frontcountry sub-district ranger in the Flamingo Ranger District. He was involved in drug interdiction cases, managed the structural fire program, was the senior park medic and the park's EMS Coordinator. He still maintained his fire red card, stayed involved in Search and Rescue (SAR), worked with Resource Management, managed a campground, and dealt with concession managers.

In August, 1990 he accepted a promotion at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, to become the Wahweap Supervisory Sub-district ranger / Law Enforcement. He supervised law enforcement and emergency response operations by vehicle, boat, and foot including SAR, structural fire, EMS, resource and wildlife protection.

In 1995, Dan accepted a position as a Special Agent as Ozark NSR, and received two promotions including assignment to the Washington Office as the Ozark Area Field Agent in 2004. While working at Ozark, Dan exemplified himself by leading and successfully investigating many significant criminal investigations, including several investigations of national significance. Dan was awarded special commendations by the United States Attorneys Office on three occasions for his casework, including leading the first successful hate crime prosecution in the Department of the Interior.

Dan devoted nearly 28 ½ years to Federal Service.

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"

TO: The family; loved ones; friends and department members: A POLICE OFFICER’S PRAYER:--- O, gentle Lord ! Keep the day/night watch with me. As I begin my tour of duty, I ask your protection from all mental, physical and spiritual harm. Sustain me with the knowledge that I am doing your work, endeavoring to keep peace among your people. Help me to be just as I enforce the law without prejudice or favor to anyone. May I be courageous but not reckless in carrying out my duties. Let me respond to all calls with haste realizing that so many are dependent upon me for life and safety. Support me with your consoling power when I am tempted to think no one really cares and that I am taken for granted. Sustain in me the conviction that so many thousands do care and are grateful for my presence. Grant that I may be loyal to my partner and my fellow officers, and that I may back them up effectively when called upon for assistance. Lord, I ask that I may return safely, after my tour of duty, to my loved ones and those who love me. I pray that I may be a good and honorable police officer; and after my tour of duty is over here on earth, may I enjoy the peace and happiness of heaven that you have promised to those who serve you well. AMEN. *** REST IN PEACE ***
