Reflections for Police Officer Shawn Barrington Silvera

It was an honor and privilege to call Shawn a friend. Even though your time on earth was cut short, the impact you left on everyone's lives that you touched can not be measured.

Shawn has inspired me to do more with my life personally and beginning Jan. 2011, I will be going to the police academy and answering the call to serve. If I am 1/10 the man and officer Shawn was, I will consider myself lucky.

Thank you for your service, sacrifice and inspiration. You'll never be forgotten.

Another year has passed and he is still remembered.
I know the tears still flow and the hurt is still there, but one day all of that will be made right when you see him again.
God bless.

Hi Jennifer, my name is Denise and my husband was killed in the line of duty in February 2004. He was 32 and we were newlyweds, married only 5 months. My parents actually know your parents from going to the in-laws retreat and my dad sent me an article on your book. I think Shawn would be so proud of you! What a terrific accomplishment! I think its so great to help other young widows with your book as well as maybe some people who just don't understand what we go through. Your idea of doing children's books on this topic is also tremendous! Just wanted to let you know I will be looking for this book the next time I am in the bookstore! Continue to take care of yourself and your precious children...you all have such a special guardian angel watching over you.

To the family and loved ones of Officer Shawn Silvera, his fellow officers with the Lino Lakes Police Department, and most especially to Shawn:

On this the third anniversary month of your tragic death, please know that you are honored and revered today and everyday.

From all the loving reflections left about you, I can see that you were an amazing man and what a grievous loss your loved ones have endured.

May your spirit continue to soar and your memory continue to inspire. You are loved and missed by so many.

Rest in Peace, Shawn. A body is but for a lifetime, but spirits and souls are for eternity and yours is forever part of those who call you beloved.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the service Shawn gave to his community and the citizens of Minnesota, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on September 6, 2005.

Just wanted to let Officer Silvera's family know that your sacrifice is not forgotten.
It has been three years and I know to your family it seems like just yesterday.
It has been seven years today since I lost my son and it seems like it was just yesterday. The memories are always vivid, they never fade.
May God continue to grant you comfort today and always.

Shawn,

I still remember the day you left us like it was yesterday. I still think of you. I have told your story to every new officer in our department, and I will continue to do so for as long as I wear a badge. I will never forget you or your sacrifice.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Two years ago today we laid you to rest. How can it be that two years have passed us by without hearing your gentle voice and your heartfelt hearty laugh? On that very sad, dreary day...God comforted us with His tears of rain to let us know that He too cried for our pain. And when you were laid at your final resting place, as the sun broke through the clouds, He assured us that you were safely home, forever resting in Him.

Thank you for touching our lives and letting us share a piece of you. Your goddaughter speaks of you often...but you already know that, don't you. We love you.

Two years ago today. It's hard to believe. I still remember that day like it was yesterday. I will never forget that day. I will never forget you Shawn. I still get tears in my eyes when I think about how much Jen and the kids, and your family miss you. I think about Jen every time I hear the song "I Hope You Dance", and I picture someday, you two dancing, once again. What a sweet day that will be. We all miss you, and think about you, and although I don't talk to you much Jen, you are thought of often. Your wife is AMAZING Shawn! Well, I don't have to tell YOU that! I know you all ready know! Keep watching from above.
