My fiancé, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in SE Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Michael did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Michael be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Deputy Bancroft's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through these tough times, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you and that you are not alone in your "journey". Should you ever need anything please do not hesitate to contact me. (Dennis' department will also always know how to reach me.)

As a fallen officer "survivor" and a friend, please accept my condolences on behalf of myself and the McElderry family. I never got the opportunity to know Michael but, I am certain he was well respected and well loved. Michael will live on in the hearts of all the lives he touched. You were all lucky to have had him be a part of your lives, even for a short time. I pray that Michael will continue to watch over us all as only he can.

Thank you Deputy Bancroft for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiancé Dennis for me.

Wishing you and all those who loved you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

I never dreamed it would be me
My name for all eternity,
Recorded here at this hallowed place
Alas, my name, no more my face.

"In the line of duty," I hear them say;
My family knew the price to pay.
My folded flag stained with their tears;
We only had those few short years.

The badge no longer on my chest,
I sleep now in eternal rest.
My sword I pass to those behind,
And pray they keep this thought in mind.

I never dreamed it would be me,
And with heavy heart and bended knee,
I ask for all here from the past;
Dear God, let my name be the last.

One Who Never Hesitates To Tackle The Most Difficult Problems..

One Who Is Always By Your Side..

One Who Knows Right From Wrong..

One Who Acts With Pride..

A Hero Touches Every One Of Us,

Whether It Be Word Or Deed..

Always Tending To Those Who Find Themselves In Need..

When A Hero Leaves This Earth, Yes, It's Sad, But True..

All Too Many Times, The Hero Is Dressed In Blue.

IN YOUR MEMORY

Don't cry because you think I'm gone,
for I am with you still.
Don't seek reasons to explain
what is simply just God's will.

It's very hard to leave all of you
and everything I've known,
but my work on earth is done now.
Our Lord has called me home.

I know you will find comfort
Just let faith guide your way.
Cause, from the moment I was born,
I have been preparing for this day.

Remember me for the laughter,
that's the greatest gift we give.
Keep me in your heart and mind
because that's where I now live.

If ever you feel you need me,
you can close your eyes and see,
I'm still right here with you,
I'm alive in your memory.
