Reflections for Corporal John Anthony "Jay" Sampietro, Jr.

Thank you for your dedicated service to your community and your department. May the Lord bless you and keep you. May they never forget your faithful service to your community and department and the brave HERO that you were. To Mrs. Sampietro, children, family, friends and co-workers, our heartfelt prayers and sympathies are with you. May God be with you all during this very sorrowful time. Words will never compensate the loss you have suffered. We pray that He now gives you all strength in your time of need. May you find peace in the thought, that we as friends, take this time to lift you up in prayer.

For your act of unselfish bravery and courage Corporal Sampietro, we salute you. Blessed be the peacekeepers.

Jay
I've only known you just over two years but in those two years I have found a great friend. You are greatly missed by the Rogersville Officers. When we stop for our coffee breaks at the Shell Station we still feel that you will come walking in and join us. We all had some good laughs together on the job as well as just having coffee together. Jay, you brought a lot of that laughter with you.
Now as we stand there having our coffee we continue to look for you to come through that door with a big smile on your face.
Now you have moved on to a greater place where you were needed for some special duty. We know that God needed a special person for the job and you were that special person.
All of us will miss you.
God Bless you Jenn and your family, our thoughts and prayers are with you. In honor of Jay we will do our very best to be there for you Jenn, Matt and Will.

I just went to another officer's page since I was reading the reflections left for Corporal Sampietro, and I found the reflection he had left for another officer killed in the line of duty. I never had the chance to meet Corporal Sampietro, but I have a good idea of what kind of man he was by reading this reflection. My thoughts are with his family and department at this time. I can't say thank you enough. I think more people should thank the officers that protect their streets more often. You never know when it could be the last time you will see them keeping everyone safe. All of these officers on this page are HEROES!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE! Here is the reflection he left on the other officer's page:

I tell my family on a regular basis that we must all die one day. Should I pass before I'm ninety in my sleep, I can only hope my death is in the service of my community. As much as we will all miss are fallen heros, I can think of no more honorable way to die than in defending the safety and freedom of those we have chosen to serve. All who wear a badge readily accepted the possibility of death in the line of duty. Our families and friends did not necessarly agree to bear the burden of our loss, yet they do. With that in mind, Molly, God rest your soul...you have made the Ultimate Sacrafice in the service of the citizens of Columbia. May you rest proud and peacefully.

To Molly's family, friends, and co-workers, honor and remember your fallen hero. The thoughts and prayers of many are with you.

To my brother Jay, When I first met you twenty years ago, I had no idea God had given me such a precious gift. The happiness you brought to my life and everyone around you is immeasurable. I have other great friends because of you. Our good ol’ days at the “Shack” in Sikeston, sharing rent on that ol’ dump in Caruthersville, our road trips, laughing at your “Oxnard” and “Evlis” impersonations or just hanging out are burned in my memory forever. But my most precious memory of you, Jay, is when you became a husband and a father and the joy it brought you. Jen, Matt and Will will always be a part of our family. It comforts me knowing you lived life to its fullest and never took a day for granted. You’ve set an example for others to follow; not only in police work but life. Your humor, your compassion, your standards, and your love for your job, family and friends made you an outstanding person and member of the Missouri State Highway Patrol. I can’t express how proud I am to call you friend. We will see each other again.

I was reading reflections for Officer Molly Bowden when I saw a memorial posted there by Corporal Sampietro...there he acknowledged that his death was a possibility, but that he thought it was the greatest honor to die in the service to those who depended upon him. God Bless his family and fellow officers of the Missouri Highway Patrol. To do your duty with the knowledge that today could be your last speaks volumes of this officer's, and all officers', heroism and dedication.

Although I did not know Jay for a long period of time I have known his father John, and mother Gerrie for several years. I have been at a few Labor Day barbecues with the family and found Jay to be a warm loving father and husband and was adored by his father and mother. Matt and Will are their pride and joy in life and Jay will be missed dearly. We do not understand why God has chosen the ones he has at such an early age but must realize there is a purpose.

I cannot imagine what pain the Sampietro family is enduring but I feel pain for them. My tears are not for me but for John, Gerrie, Jennifer, Matt, and Will. Fray and I send our thoughts and prayers to you today, next week, next month, and the years to come. We love you.

Jay,
We are all going to miss you, but we will never forget you. You have been a great officer and friend to all of us. But, just like Dennis said at your services when we put on our uniforms and duty belts and get into our cars, you will be there.

There is a poem that I have framed in my house. I belive this poem to be true. It is titled The Final Inspection.

The Policeman stood and faced his God,
which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining
just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, Policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church, have you been true?"

The Policeman squared his shoulders and
said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times, my talk was rough...
and sometimes, I've been violent
because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny
that wasn't mine to keep,
though I worked a lot of overtime
when the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
though at times, I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here,
Lord, it needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much.
But if you don't, I'll understand."

There was silence all around the throne where the saints often trod.
As the Policeman waited quietly
for the judgement of his God.

"Step forward now, Policeman.
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets.
You've done your time in hell."

To Jennifer, Matt and Will and rest of the Sampietro Family, you will be in our prayers. God Bless Jay Sampietro and all who wear the uniform.

I never got the chance to meet officer Sampietro although from reading everything said about him, I wish I could have. I have been reading through other reflections and am impressed and moved by the brotherhood of the Highway Patrol, not just Missouri but other units around the country. I had the privilege of watching his procession drive by in front of my residence and stood in awe at the support of Highway Patrol, City Police, Fire Departments and first responders. It was very humbling. Mrs. Sampeitro, may God bless you and your children.
