I met Jay when I was going through the Police Academy in 2004. Jay was always giving me pointers on what to do and what not to do! Jay's favorite thing to say to me was "Boy, we'll get the new out of you yet!" Jay was an inspiration to me and to my family. I watched Jay in his daily duties and Jay showed me a lot of things. Jay was a mentor to me for the short time that I had the honor of serving the community with him. I remember one night on an accident scene, Jay rolled in and said "What kind of information did you get for me my little apprentice?" That meant a lot to me. To be mentored by such a great trooper was an honor in and of itself, but to have it come from Jay was something different all together! I remember a lot of things that Jay said and did, but one thing that I will never forget is the smerk and the funny laugh that he would have right after he did something onery. Jay always was doing something onery. Jay made sure that I got at least one of his "lessons". That lesson was that no matter what, have fun doing your job. Jay knew the toll that Law Enforcement takes on an officer and his family. Jay would always find something funny in every situation he encountered. Jay patrolled the City of Fordland a majority of the time because Fordland has no full-time officers. Jay was and still is a member of the Fordland Police Department because of his faithfulness to the citizens here. Jay was one that I could truly call a friend and I can guarantee that his legacy with the Fordland Police Department will never fade away! Jay, I miss you buddy! My only hope is that I can be half as awesome as you were! Keep my avenue in Heaven safe Jay, I'll be there to help you when it's my time to go! Love ya buddy!

On September of 2004 I went to work for the Webster County Sheriff's Office and met brother Jay the following day. I knew when I met Jay for the first time that he was the type of Corporal that would be there when and where ever you need him. Thou I only had the pleasure of knowing and working with Jay for a little under a year I learned alot from him. Jay was a model law enforcement officer who loved his job and family. Jay and his family are in my thoughts everyday. I still catch myself laughing remembering how comical Jay was. I hope that I will be half the officer that Jay was. I miss you everyday brother, but I know your in a better place. We will meet again someday brother Jay.

I had the honor of knowing, working, becoming friends with Jay. At the time I was a Webster County Deputy the same county that Jay was assinged. If myself and Jay were on the same shift we always had supper at the old red roof (Pizza . I learned alot from Jay and was there August 17 2005 and stayed by friend, and fellow brother side. If we were having a bad shift Jay was there to pick you up. I remeber several calls requesting back-up,as soon as your traffic was finished 584 would state I'm all ready enroute. I looked up to Jay because he was the model officer. I feel that Jay was born to be a Missouri State Trooper. Jay was always looking to get into something. I sure do miss brother you brother Jay

I met Jay in May of 03 after I began working in Webster County. From the time I met him he always had a way of making us laugh with some story or some comment. Then I had the privelige of working with him on the fire department for the time that he was on there. As I started testing with the Patrol Jay became a reference and an information source, and always asked everytime we met what the status was on my testing process, when i would test he would call that day or have me call and fill him in on how it was going. It was just another example of how Jay was concerned with those around him. Jay you were also a great father and involved with those boys in everything they did. I saw Jay at the polls in November and he was carrying Will in the car seat and I said " oh I see you had a baby" and he was quick to correct me and say " No, I didnt have a baby she did" refering to Jenn, but the glow on his face of having that new boy was beyond anything you could describe, and was he quick to show him off. Everytime I saw Jay at the F.D checking trucks he had Matthew with him and would answer every question that boy had. When you asked him about the family he always had a smile on his face when he talked of them, because they were his pride and joy. After I told him we were expecting he would always ask me how my wife was doing, and would give his " ten cents" on child rearing, always making me laugh, its too bad he never got the chance to meet Braden. Jay, you are in a wonderful place right now, and I know you are looking down on all of us, just know that no matter what we do you are and will forever be in our hearts and minds. To Jennifer, William and Matthew, you are in mine and my familys prayers, may god bless you and watch over you, and Jay may God bless your soul. You will always be remembered by those of us that were HONORED to work with you, because it was just that, an honor. You were a great man and and an awesome father, husband and Trooper. An epitomy of them all.. We will always miss you...

When I heard of Jays death I was greatly saddened in many ways. Lossing a friend and co-worker is never easy but the type of person Jay was I know that he departed the way he wanted to go out. That point was reiterated with what Jay himself wrote on this same website to another lost peace officer I quote,
"Should I pass before I'm ninety in my sleep, I can only hope my death is in the service of my community. As much as we will miss are fallen heros, I can think of no more honorable way to die than in defending the safety and freedom of those who have chosen to serve. All who wear a badge readily accepted the possibility of death in the line of duty. Our families and friends did not necessarly agree to bear the burden of our loss, yet they do."
Corporal J. A. Sampietro
Missouri State Highway Patrol
2005-02-11

With that said, it is a great loss with Jay but he accepted the fate his job may have held and is honored in his departure. The hardest thing I am having with Jays departure was not for Jay himself but for the community he served and his family most of all. I knew how much his family ment to him and it breaks my heart that Matt and Will can have only pictures and stories and vary few if any memories of their dad. Jay was a wonderful father and husband and knowing that the boys will miss out knowing first hand what a spectacular man Jay was. Jay was the type of man that I know his sons will be proud of.
Jay was a great asset to anything he was involved in; job, family, and community. It will be hard at first but life will go on, we will do our jobs, spend time with our families and friends. We will always have a part of Jay in our heart and minds that will surface at the most unexpected times, showing us that Jay is still doing what he loved to do, protecting and looking over us.
Jay you will be missed.
May God rest your soul and protect your family and give them guidance.
