Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Nels Daniel "Dan" Niemi

I live near where you passed, and I heard the shots. My prayers are with your family. The scumbag who got you has been caught and sentanced, so justice has been done.

Officer Niemi -

I met you the night before you died on a ride along with Officer Guillon. You were one of the most articulate, easy going persons I have ever met. I spent my 23rd birthday at your funeral, and have since joined the San Jose Police Department. You have touched my life forever and will always remember your sacrifice. I pray for your family and will always reflect upon your sacrifice that you gave for others.

Well, a New Year another day on the streets. I try and see everyone when I can. Tom and Robin, Luis and Karen, all actually married!?... so much is happening. I start and finish my shift with you. Some of these guys just don't get it. If they weren't around this situation, the reality of the chance that it can actually happen doesn't hit them. Watch over us, days, swings and mids.

Dan

Hey buddy I still think of you and miss the good times.

I have not been back to four corners yet. I have passed by a couple of times and every time I think about midnight cups with you and the crew.

I still think about the night the patrol car got in two separate crashes in the same location and I chuckle. The look on yours and Tom's face was priceless as that guy kept going down the street.

Well, just needed to say I was thinking of you. If you see Laurie tell her I think of her and miss her as well.

Dan, the Public Safety Memorial ceremony is coming up. The display turned out real nice. We are always thinking about you and this weekend's dedication will be in honor of you and all the others who've made the ultimate sacrifice. In the relatively short time you were with us, you made a huge impact, both professionally and personally. You are certainly missed.

Hey, I din't get to the site on time, but happy birthday!! I bought your cup of coffee that night and sat with me that night. The girls also wished you a happy birthday. Miss you, watch over us......

Dan: Tom & Robin finally did it on Oct. 9. It was a beautiful ceremony, and they remembered you and other recently passed family members in a simple, but wonderful ceremony. Robin even had a "borrowed" bracelet with your name on it to keep you part of their most important day. You were both thought and spoken about that evening, knowing you were looking down on them with your smile of approval. You are missed.

Well, Larry's adult suspect got the death sentence,....officially on Nov 2nd. At least the public is starting to realize they need to send a message. Miss you. Haven't made my way in to S.L. 4 crnrs. They need to put your "word" on one of their cups. but only if served as an Americano!

This night has been difficult. I rode down to the site tonight for the first time since you left. Two years ... has it really been that long? As we turned the corner at Doolittle and Fairway I felt my chest get tighter and tighter. I almost made Hackl stop, but I felt it was time ... I needed to go there. I did ... and with Hackl, Kyle, and Torres at my side ... I cried (hysterically) ... I laughed (out loud) as we relived some of your more entertaining stories, and then I stood in silence (listening to the wind) ... I remembered the smile you always had for me, the warm hug, the words of encouragement you always shared and the twinkle in your eye as you walked out of the jail each time.

Some may not want to remember that night ... I always will ... it is the night I lost a dear friend and the gates of heaven gained one hell of guardian.

I have not forgotten, I will always remember, I will always love you.

Please continue to watch over us my friend.

Next week, I hope to see the official stamp placed on the jury's decision.

"I was drunk."
"I did not want to go down."

I am glad that the jury refused to accept such banal reasons to opt for manslaughter, rather than murder.

Officer Niemi:

May You Rest-In-Peace.

Two years have passed since you were called away and I know those that love you have thought of you every hour of every day during that time. You are a true hero and heroes never die. Continue to keep watch over your loved ones and those still out on patrol watching over the Thin Blue Line. You will never be forgotten.

I said a prayer of thanks that this hard working jury delivered justice in this case. It does not lessen the pain of those who love you and forever will feel the anquish of losing you. However, the loved ones of all fallen officers desire these two things: That their beloved will never be forgotten and their memory always be revered, and secondly, that justice be served for all those officers who were murdered in the line of duty. It is important for the officers, their families and friends, the law enforcement brotherhood and sisterhood, and for the greater community.

Your parents and I have shared tears together. We have been and will continue to be in solidarity with each other.

I'm so tired of hearing about how these losers aren't responsibile for their actions because of alcohol/drugs/other pathetic reasons. Thank God for this jury that had enough common sense to hold this killer accountable. May God bless you Officer Niemi and grant peace for your family and friends.
