Reflections for Police Officer Nels Daniel "Dan" Niemi

Dear Dan,

What a beautiful young lady Gabby is becoming. Grandpa and I are taking her to her first Civil War Ball. Her dress is silk, her spirit is yours and I see it in her always. I know you are proud of her, as we are.

We spoke of you this morning at line up and a momment of silence was offered. Curt reflected on you "Academy" writings and what an amazing person and Officer you were. It was odd seeing all the new faces that never had a chance to know you ... they could see the impact in our faces ... the pain that is still here ... but the fantastic memories and impression that you left upon us. We placed a lei upon your plaque in front of the department ... we will not forget.

Brother Niemi, another year passes, and yet it feels almost as painful as the first. Robin and I were talking this morning, there are only two other people on our shift who worked with you back then. Everyone knows you of course and still wears the bands. We'll be reminding everyone of just what you sacrificed four years ago, who you did it for, and who you were. Miss you brother. Please keep an eye on these young pups.

It's 4th of July ... Tommy is working OT and I am home trying to keep the animals calm. Sgt. Sanchez played the memorial DVD the other night at line up. So many new rookies that didn't have the pleasure of knowing you ... Bob wanted to make sure that they knew who you were and what type of impact losing you was to the department. He asked me to come down to line up ... I knew what impact seeing and hearing that DVD would have on me ... the minute it started, so did my tears. The pain is still real ... the empty place in my heart is still hollow ... I think my tears let the rookies know what you meant to me and SLPD as a whole. Bob reminded them WHY we do this job ... and WHY we continue to do things in a safe fashion. The 4th anniversary is sneaking up on us ... Tommy and I decided we needed to make that day a positive ... we are gathering our family together and having our 3D/4D ultrasound of our daughter that night. We will all be able to see her together then have dinner and raise a toast to you. I wish you were here to meet here in October, but I feel blessed that she will have such and amazing angel to watch over her. Continue to guide us all down the right path ... you are not forgotten my friend.

Miss you. I watched some of the Oakland Memorial and thought of you. All of the officers I met during the trial were so nice to us. I don't ever think I shall hear the sound of bag pipes without thinking of you.

It seems impossible that it's been nearly 4yrs since you were taken from us. You are never far from thought, but the tragic loss of four OPD officers this weekend brings it all back like it was yesterday. You are still sorely missed.

Hey, working last week and someone searched me out to tell me "an officer" was transported code 3 from San Leandro with a gunshot wound. I was taken back and everything stood still for a moment. Later found out it wasn't SLPD, and that the officer will recover.....

Dan I remember you like the day was yesterday that we met. I am so happy that you were a part of my life, as you were such a positive person. I remember all the fun we had together in the FTO program and the the talks about Dave and Busters near your house and how my son Jake loved going there. Love you brother and miss you Frankie Moynihan

The night has come and gone ... just because I didn't post here last night doesn't mean you have been forgotten. That couldn't be further from the truth. I was with loved ones and ones that love you. We hoisted one high in your honor ... told stories about you ... and yes, even re-lived that night again. 3 years later ... the pain is still there and hurts like it did that night. Thank you for your guidence from above. I truly believe that you keep your hand on our shoulders and give just a little squeeze now and then to keep us on the right track.
Thank you my friend.
Continue to watch over us all.
I miss you

On the 3rd anniversary of Officer Niemi's death, we honored his service in our patrol briefing by reading his entry from ODMP. Each day, we honor one fallen officer on the anniversary of their death so as to keep them in our thoughts, and also to remind us of the dangers inherent in our job. Officer Niemi is not forgotten.

I became a Security Forces Member in the Air Force which is kinda like a COP...But everyday I put on my uniform and look in the mirrior and see that badge, I think of you and the sacrafice you made and the day to day dangers my dad and all the other officers in the world face. Thank you for your service and YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN....LOVE YOU DAN
