Reflections for Police Officer Nels Daniel "Dan" Niemi

Miss you. I watched some of the Oakland Memorial and thought of you. All of the officers I met during the trial were so nice to us. I don't ever think I shall hear the sound of bag pipes without thinking of you.

It seems impossible that it's been nearly 4yrs since you were taken from us. You are never far from thought, but the tragic loss of four OPD officers this weekend brings it all back like it was yesterday. You are still sorely missed.

Hey, working last week and someone searched me out to tell me "an officer" was transported code 3 from San Leandro with a gunshot wound. I was taken back and everything stood still for a moment. Later found out it wasn't SLPD, and that the officer will recover.....
miss you,...gonna hang out with MM this weekend, miss ya

Dan I remember you like the day was yesterday that we met. I am so happy that you were a part of my life, as you were such a positive person. I remember all the fun we had together in the FTO program and the the talks about Dave and Busters near your house and how my son Jake loved going there. Love you brother and miss you Frankie Moynihan

Three years later and still can't really believe that you're gone.

The night has come and gone ... just because I didn't post here last night doesn't mean you have been forgotten. That couldn't be further from the truth. I was with loved ones and ones that love you. We hoisted one high in your honor ... told stories about you ... and yes, even re-lived that night again. 3 years later ... the pain is still there and hurts like it did that night. Thank you for your guidence from above. I truly believe that you keep your hand on our shoulders and give just a little squeeze now and then to keep us on the right track.
Thank you my friend.
Continue to watch over us all.
I miss you

On the 3rd anniversary of Officer Niemi's death, we honored his service in our patrol briefing by reading his entry from ODMP. Each day, we honor one fallen officer on the anniversary of their death so as to keep them in our thoughts, and also to remind us of the dangers inherent in our job. Officer Niemi is not forgotten.

Dan even though I only met you a couple of times you worked at an agency that I bsically grew up in and I have alot of respect for what you did. I became a Security Forces Member in the Air Force which is kinda like a COP...But everyday I put on my uniform and look in the mirrior and see that badge, I think of you and the sacrafice you made and the day to day dangers my dad and all the other officers in the world face. Thank you for your service and YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN....LOVE YOU DAN

Been meaning to leave a little something. I first met you an your in-laws for a get together. You were very excited about being an officer. I now know exactly what that feels like. I finally made it and enjoy the job so much. You in my thoughts and I talk about you from time to time.

I live near where you passed, and I heard the shots. My prayers are with your family. The scumbag who got you has been caught and sentanced, so justice has been done.

Officer Niemi -

I met you the night before you died on a ride along with Officer Guillon. You were one of the most articulate, easy going persons I have ever met. I spent my 23rd birthday at your funeral, and have since joined the San Jose Police Department. You have touched my life forever and will always remember your sacrifice. I pray for your family and will always reflect upon your sacrifice that you gave for others.

Well, a New Year another day on the streets. I try and see everyone when I can. Tom and Robin, Luis and Karen, all actually married!?... so much is happening. I start and finish my shift with you. Some of these guys just don't get it. If they weren't around this situation, the reality of the chance that it can actually happen doesn't hit them. Watch over us, days, swings and mids.
