Reflections for Police Officer Nels Daniel "Dan" Niemi

Rest in peace brother; your job is done. You will not be forgotten.

Deputy Gail Naramore
Sacramento County Sheriff, Sacramento California

August 5, 2005

To the Niemi family: May your memories provide some comfort to you. No words can ever combat the overwhelming grief that you are feeling. Please know that you are not alone. We are all behind you and are praying for you, especially Dan's children.

I still cannot believe that you were taken from us. No one has a right to commit such a heinous act. This wasn't supposed to happen in "my town" to "my friend". Dan, you are sorely missed. I want to see your smiling face. I want to hear your quirky jokes. My heart aches for all that your family is going through. Your family in blue aches, too. Rest in peace, dear friend, you will never be forgotten.

I will miss your smile, I will miss your sense of humor, I will miss your inquiries about my latest dog cases. I will miss you. I will never forget you. You will always be in our hearts.

I would first like to thank all of the surrounding agency support in everything. An impressive display of brother/sisterhood.

Dan..God and the San Leandro PD gave me a second chance at life. I mourn the chance you were not afforded. I will miss watching you talk to the citizens of San Leandro in only the way you could...you had an amazing way with words and a calming effect on people.

I will miss our dog watch coffee meetings. I will miss our personal discussions about beat 6 and how your wife was a better fisherman than you. Thank you for sharing those stories with me.

It was an honor to work with you and you will be dearly missed.

To the Niemi family:

I am terribly sorry for your loss. If you need anything whatsoever, please call me anytime.

Officer Shane Nelson #292
San Leandro PD

As a former resident of San Leandro, it saddens me to see another officer's life taken in such a manner. I hope your family and friends find peace and keep your memory alive for ever...

I sent you on the call, I sent you a cover, I sent the whole force to your aide. I wish that would have been enough. I wish you were here to respond to my MDTs. I wish you were here to laugh at my jokes. I wish I would have gone to Monday morning breakfasts. I wish you were here.
I miss your smile. I miss your laugh in dispatch. I miss your quirky MDT messages. I miss your Monday morning breakfast invites.
Although there is so much I miss, I always know where to find you...in my heart, and Monday morning breakfast with the crew. Dan, you are sorely missed but always remembered.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Officer Dan Niemi. My husband is a Police Officer and I can't imagine the amount of grief the family and the San Leandro Police Department are feeling. Please know that Dan was a true hero.

Somebody killed a policeman today,
and a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect,
will be buried with him at his side.
The suspect that shot him will stand up in court,
with counsel demanding his rights.
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,
and spend many long, lonely nights.
The beat that he walked was a battle field too,
just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
to his name they will add a gold star.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
a cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
and he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call, of himself gave his all,
and a part of America died.

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God."

We are a unified brotherhood. When we lose one of our members, we all suffer the loss. But let us not forget the family the departed leaves behind. The ones who saw our friend leave for work each day, with a pit in their stomach wondering if this was the last time they would see him. My condolences to Dan's wife, with a special prayer for Dan's in-laws, Jeri and Randy. They too are true heroes.

On behalf of the men and women of Industry Sheriff's Station, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and co-workers of Officer Niemi. Having lost Deputy Michael Arruda last year (EOW 06-15-04) and more recently Deputy Jerry Ortiz (EOW 06-24-05), we know all too well the pain and reality of losing one of our own. Take comfort from knowing your extended law enforcement family grieves with you.
