Reflections for Police Officer David I. Bergum

Officer Bergum,
On today, the 75th anniversary of your death I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice-not just for your Community but for our Country as well when you served with the U.S. Army in the CBI fighting the Japanese during World War II. And to your Family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 63rd anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Rest In Peace.

When calamity comes, the wicked are brought down, but even in death the righteous have a refuge - Proverbs 14:32.

You are not forgotten. My heart aches for all you missed in the lives of your children.

I’m in my 60’s now and long retired from a law enforcement career that spanned 34 years. I don’t recall ever having met my uncle David but I remember his family arriving at our house after the shooting. It may be my earliest memory; I was just short of 2 years old. He gave his life for the city of Detroit, folks said. That is a true thing. I’m still in touch with his three children – his youngest boy never knew him, being born months after the shooting. God bless Officer Bergum and those others who offer to go where few would dare. He has my love and respect.
